Space to discuss all things 3D printing I suppose!

We’ve been toying with the idea for years now but I’ve always worried it’s like a bread maker type of gadget (but multiple times the price) that you play with once and never use again. I have projects in mind and even fun experimental ones to do with the field I work in so now more than ever have felt tempted just to pull the trigger on it?

I played with the idea.

My brother has got one, it takes up a space, patience and cost of printing materials.

I quickly dismissed. There are only so many wall brackets and rolling trays, that take an age to print out before it becomes obsolete and a bore.

I've seen a couple of lovely things that he has done, but they have taken days. I suppose if you have projects in mind it will be great but I can clearly tell most things he has done are unessersary and have been printed just for the sake of it.

The space it occupies is what’s holding me off of purchasing to be entirely honest. We’re in London so space is sacred and I’ve kept the house v minimalistic for this reason, the idea of having something with a high space to infrequent use ratio kills me. I did think about putting it on a rolling caster wheel type unit that can go in the office but still prefer keeping floor space free unless needed Unless we build a shelf but it would have to be bleeping huge lol

It depends on whether you have any interesting projects in mind already. Things you want to print parts for etc. If its just for trying out accesories its definitely going to be a waste of space.. I've had one for two years now and it works fine, I mostly use it to print figures for tabletop games for myself and my friends , some costume elements, and random parts for work/uni projects. I'd say that I use it at least once per two weeks(averaging out the high-intensity and low intensity times during the year). If you have some things you want to try for your work then I'd really recommend getting one, it's a great tool. It certainly brought me a lot of fun and more possibilites on the projects ive worked with. If you get into it, you'll start developing skills in design softwares as well and seeing your projects be brought to life is very satisfying. If it connects to your line of work then it's an even better bonus skill.

I totally get you about London and space. That's why I moved away!

But really, the space element I feel is a massive consideration and is the biggest factor that put me off. They are quite large, my brother's is the size of a medium fish tank and it isn't the most aesthetically pleasing of pieces neither. So a trolley unit you can wheel it away when not in use would probably be ideal.
