Working in academia

I wanted some perspective on what it's like to work in academia in the UK, particularly in the humanities. A lot of the info out there is US and STEM oriented which I think may be a slightly different experience.
I would love to do a PhD in modern languages but don't know if I would regret it as a career move- unlike STEM there isn't really an industry to go into as an alternative.
Is everything about it being toxic, poorly paid and unstable true? Do you lose your job if you don't get enough papers published? A lot of the lecturers and professors in the MFL department at my uni have been there for years which makes me question the idea of it being an unstable career. Is there really zero work life balance? Or is balance unnecessary because everybody loves their research so much? šŸ˜œ
Any insight would be appreciated!
