As the name clearly states, I work in a school canteen.
had a new manager for 18mths now.
Not complying with food safety regulations. Examples are:
Defrosting chicken overnight in a sink
Labels on sandwiches not clearly labelled with allergens.
Cooked a fish pie containing prawns on a Tuesday, left it to cool to room temperature, then put it in the fridge, and on the Friday froze it to use another day.
nut free school and bought and used pesto containing cashew nuts.
I went to management with my concerns, dates etc of when breaches were made.
management had a meeting with manager then we all had a sit down today to mediate.
manager had a note book and basically said I was lying about the pesto, argued with me, asked for photographic proof, which I couldn’t provide as I had thrown it away. Manager said they only order nut free vegan pesto, I counteracted by saying that’s not true, and it wasn’t until I informed them that it was another member of staff that found it, opened in the fridge did they then say that it must of been a substitute and then blamed it on the person putting stock away.
the manager then made the comment “I only ever order nut free products and never anything that says “may contain nuts”
The thing is, currently I’m angry I’ve been made out to be a liar, and secondly I know off the top of my head at least 3 items in the work freezer/fridge/storeroom that say “may contain nuts”

other half thinks I should just throw the manager under the bus, take photos and invite upper management that lead the mediation to come and have a look.

what would you do???

Absolutely throw them under it.

I had a friend who died from ingesting nuts that she was allergic to. It’s an awful awful way to die. Don’t duck around with allergies!

Throw under the bus, it’s about potentially saving a life as dramatic as it sounds

Definitely do the harder but right thing and pursue it. This person is taking a lot of risks and could potentially be lethal to someone with an allergy or just make a lot of kids poorly if protocol isn’t being adhered too.

Definitely report. Even better if you have pictures as proof, or write down everything with dates etc!

they sound utterly shite at their job, and it’s dangerous! Disgusting 🤢

Throw them under the bus! You have done your bit and and clearly dealing with a psycho. They need a job where their lack of care won’t potentially kill someone 😤

My mum works in a school canteen as well an she would be reporting that ASAP, end of the day it's kids life's that she's messing about with, she could easily hurt or even kill one, you never mess about with food especially when it's for others, I'd be taking evidence an keeping notes of everything she does an going straight above the head of managers to head office an health an hygiene

Report it asap. As someone who works in a school, I'd hate to see my kids ill from food hygiene failures. 🤔😔

This makes me sick. those children are at risk every day. I have a peanut allergy, luckily my daughter doesn't but we don't really know yet as she is still young. this terrifies me. All under the guise of being a nut free school also. Sickening!! You should so let it rip!!!

I’ve done everything I can. Put my concerns in writing, spoke to management and refused point blank to use/cook anything that is unsafe

We are due a check soon anyway and I’ve requested external auditors to come in.
The fish pie has been removed from the freezer, thrown away I presume, I’m currently job hunting bits it’s difficult to find somewhere that’s the same money and hours. Plus it’s on the doorstep so no commute

Absolutely report it! Imagine if a kid dies because of this and you knew about the potential risk but didn’t
do any thing

Report it and any further mediation you’re fully within your rights to bring someone in as witness (some people are billy big balls when they have you in their own)

My partner works in the nhs and after having our baby, they would like change to the shifts for childcare reasons, requested shifts of 3 days for 14 hour shifts. So not asked for a reduction in hours what so ever, boss has came back and said this can’t be done! Don’t understand as colleagues do this working pattern, any advice please 😭

If other people do it, it might mean that there wouldn't be cover across all the days in the week with your partner doing it too. I.e. it doesn't fit the business need.

As far as I an aware employers only have to offer same job pattern back. They should consider flexible working patterns but it isn't a given it will be approved.

This! Allergies are not a joke. I always think of poor Amy from this morning

You clearly are more clues up and have a strong sense of morals to be so strong in being able to challenge the boss who is 100% in the wrong. This is also why I’m 100% in you speaking up …https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2020...-per-year-in-uk-because-of-foodborne-illness/
