I think it's fine, sometimes I've read messages in passing but got distracted or wasn't able to reply right away then i'd get messages from the other person being annoyed i haven't replied.... so would rather turn them off and save myself the headache.

I always turn off read receipts. Sometimes I'll glance at a message and plan to reply later.

I don't understand why it would be seen as shady?

I have them turned off on iMessage but not on Whatsapp but I don't really care either way. I tend to message through iMessage for work quite often and would rather people didn't see when I have or haven't read a message lol...

I don't understand why people make a big issue out of others reading their message and not replying right away so it's understandable that people turn them off.

I have had them turned off for years, nothing shady about it - I don't see much use in people knowing when you've read a message either. I don't want to risk upsetting sensitive people by not replying immediately but can't always reply quickly/when I've read something, so there seem to be no benefits to leaving read receipts on tbh. If something was time pressured personally I would call anyways.

I have my read receipts on, but not my last seen. But it wouldn’t really bother me either way, and I don’t care when people have them on/off

Text me and you’ll get a reply in 12 to 24 working days,
you shouldn’t and don’t need confirmation I’m ignoring you.

But what about people that have the last seen hidden? 😆

I select read receipts on for my boys on iMessage, but no one else, I sometimes turn it off on WhatsApp in the evening if I don’t want to be disturbed or can’t be arsed having a conversation!

How is it shady? We are already way too connected and contactable 24/7 maybe people actually want a minute sliver of privacy? Your probably one of those people who get annoyed if someone doesn’t text back immediately ! Some people have a life! Can’t believe u have asked this... there’s people starving out there ! Wow! 21st century problems..

May aswell just set up a live stalker cam in peoples homes.... how is having read receipts of shady wtf 😹

Is this really an issue?! I’ve always turned this function off as (1) I value my privacy, and (2) if it was truly urgent the sender would call me... you know... ‘ring, ring’? 🤷🏼‍♀️ if having this switched off makes me shady, then I really do despair

ETA: I’m just sitting here WTF’ing, shaking me head.

When I was dating an absolute tit of a man, I must confess, I did find it shady that his was hidden.

8 years down the line I couldn't give a crap (I'm now happily married).

I couldn’t care less, sometimes it’s helpful to see if someone’s got your message but other than that I respect their choices. I don’t even know if I have mine on.
I have my husband on the find people app so if he ever disappears I can find him 😂 but I couldn’t really care about anyone else (my kids are too little to have phones).

I cant believe this is actually a problem 🤣. I have all mine off and no ones ever questioned me about it. They probably have theirs off too! 👍😂
