What do you feed your cat?

I feed Canagan wet food, Catit wet food and Royal Canin dry and Canagan dry. Two of my cats have health issues so I have to give them Royal Canin veterinary diets.

Iams isn't great, you'd be better off with Canagan, James Wellbeloved or Natures Variety.

Be aware that a lot of people are having problems with Purina foods at the moment, mainly Felix. Their cats are ill and some have died. There is also a problem with pancytopenia which is killing cats and has been linked to Sainsburys hypoallergenic dry food, Ava dry food and Applaws dry food.

Feed the best food that you can realistically afford because it does pay off in terms of improved health and less illness.

We buy bozita from zooplus. it’s Swedish and can be in a can or Tetra Pak with jelly or gravy.

It’s a high meat content jelly meat which looks the same but is much better. Both of mine have beautiful coats since they swapped.
They get royal canin dental biscuits too.

So for the past few days my cat (2 years old, indoor cat, generally full of beans, no health problems as per her last check up) has been a bit off her food. I thought she might be eating a bit less because of the heat, but though she is eating less, she is pooping more (twice a day instead of her usual once - and it stinks! This has only happened twice but I'm always on the lookout for any changes). Her diet is a combination of wet and dry food (she eats Whiskas nuts & gravy pouches and also Gourmet Mon Petit pouches. She is usually a really good eater - but while she is still eating her wet food right now she seems to be gone right off the dry food.

Anyway, I was looking in to changing up her food and fell down an internet rabbit hole, which has told me that feeding a cat Whiskas is akin to feeding them McDonalds every day (basically Whiskas is like junk food for cats?!) The internet has also informed me that for dry food I should stay well away from Whiskas and should only feed my cat high-quality grain free dry food. There's also an argument that cats shouldn't eat any processed food at all - that they'd be better off eating meat, fish etc.

So....what do you feed your cat? I'm interested in hearing of any brands of grain free dry food people might use. I was looking into Canagan's cat food and the content of their food does seem a lot more natural than the Whiskas dry food. It is also a lot more expensive, of course! She does seem to be turning up her nose at the Whiskas nuts at the moment, so I might have to fork out!

If any of these issues with her persist, I will of course take her to the vet. I'm just interested in finding out any good brands and what everyone generally feeds their cat/s!

Whiskas, felix ect is like mcdonalds, they eat it but it doesnt fill them up. Ours are on gormet, again its not the best (its better than whiskas/felix though) but they literally won't eat anything else.

I beleive foods like Encore and Thrive are really good as they're mainly just chicken ect.

Whiskas is, in my opinion rubbish. But you shouldn't need to feed 3 different types either, you are making that complicated. You might think Canagen is expensive, but you need to consider the amount of food you need to feed and work out the cost per day. Chances are you'll feed less of a better quality food and so might nit work out so expensive.

I have three Maine Coons and they get Felix sachets (4 per day between them) plus Royal Canin MC dry food. We don't have a lot of money atm and sometimes have to rely on the food bank to help us feed our cats. They usually give us a big bag of Whiskas dry food which we mix with the Royal Canin as one gets a runny bum if we completely change his food.

I'm shocked about Royal Canin being full of sugar, it was recommended to me by a breeder as it's specifically made for their bigger mouths to help clean their teeth.

does iams fall into this category?? we feed our two moggies both their pouches and dry vitality food and since switching from whiskas have noticed way fewer mice!

Iams is "ok" in my opinion. Not great, but wouldn't advise a client to swap unless there was a medical need

This comment has really concerned me. I have been feeding my indoor cat Purina indoor formula and the indoor Purina wet cat food formula. Has anyone had any bad experiences with this paticular type ?

My cats have been on Purina biscuits since we got them , were recommended by our vet and by the cats protection when we got them and they’ve been fine ..

The problems seem to be with the new Felix pouches labeled with 'No Colourants' from what I read.

I have a neutered British shorthair and after he experienced some stress related urine issues I now feed him hills prescription urinary care food. He loves it, but it's so expensive... however it's cheaper than a trip to the vet and he's like a different cat on it. Before I fed him gourmet sachets, you can get quite good value when buying the big pack.

Sorry I missed the dry part out! Zoo plus have a great selection of brands I’d never heard of. I looked through then googled them, I hope that helps.

Ah that's a relief to hear for me at least. I feel terrible for anybody who's lost a pet though the food they've been eating, that would be horrible. I find Purina is good and my boy enjoys it, especially their wet cat food indoor formula and it's affordable for me. The dry cat food bag lasts a while.

My cat is 17 years old and is fed mostly a wet diet with biscuits occasionally too. The wet food is always HiLife Chicken (sometimes the tuna one is a treat) or Feline Fayre chicken. I order FF from their website in bulk and it gets delivered. It’s expensive but worth it - she’s never had any health problems and has eaten this food / brands since I adopted her when she was 5. Both brands have high chicken content and relatively low additives.

Her previous owner fed her only dry food (Purina biscuits) and she still loves them so I do give her a small portion of them every day. I buy the big bag (like 20kg) and it lasts for months.

Cat food really is a minefield but I figure if you can afford it, it’s worth spending some money on for the sake of your cats health.

Our cats are on a dry food only diet , we get the Purina one complete food and they love it .. have three bowls about the house (one per cat but they do share) and they graze , usually they have about 70g each a day … they love the shitty wet food like whiskas but our vet advised it wasn’t great so we changed about 2 years ago

For treats they occasionally share a tin of tuna or get cooked chicken , or sometimes will have a sachet of Sheba if ive been to pets at home

Thanks, that's good to hear. I used to feed my cat the generic maybe more unhealthy Whiskas etc and thought that putting him on a diet of indoor forumula Purina would do him some good so seeing the comment about Purina being linked to deaths worried me. He's generally a pretty laid back boy and eats anything. The only thing he ever turned his nose up to was Blink.

One of our cats (the only girl , Tilly) is very fussy .. she will not eat any wet food apart from Shebe and Gourmet and it’s why we moved to dry food only diet ! We bought them all a Lily’s Kitchen Turkey Dinner thing for Christmas - the boys wolfed it down but she turned her nose up at it ! Purina is the only thing she’ll eat !

Nature's menu is really good wet food for cats. Quite expensive but there are more expensive foods out there. Mine unfortunately stopped eating all wet food, he now eats dry lily's kitchen and thrive, trying different ones to find one he likes most. He loved applaws but we stopped it after a lot of cats got ill/died after eating the food, even though we didn't have the affected batch I still wouldn't trust them anymore.

Purina Gourmet sachets and some of the same brand biscuits for when we're out during the day.

She'll occasionally get some proper fillets of fish cooked without oil or seasoning or some sardines in spring water, deboned and mashed up. She's a year old with a beautiful coat so hopefully I'm doing the right things?!

I'm soo shocked about the junk food whiskas comparison. We used to feed her whiskas kitten food and she was always hungry so that makes sense!

We feed our boy canagan dry food and then either encore or hi life wet food. Main thing is to make sure the meat content is over 60% in the wet food. He's indoors and mainly I just want to make sure he's eating the best he can. It took me a long time to be find food he liked and I was confident it was good for him. It was especially hard as a kitten as there's less variety for those under 1 years old
