I had a gastric bypass in 2018. Best thing I ever did. It’s not easy but so very worth it!

Have you had many nasty side effects? I’m considering a sleeve
Not really. I do get “dumping syndrome” occasionally but it’s more if I am not paying attention to what I eat if if I drink too fast after eating. I am so happy I did it, it has changed my life in so many ways.

Have you had hair thinning? Sorry to go on! I’m so tempted to have it but my major fear is that it wouldn’t work?

I don’t mind, please don’t worry! So I have very thick hair and I thought I had escaped as I got to 6 moths post op without losing any. However, I did lose hair for a while from 6 months but I took biotin every day which helped and it honestly wasn’t that bad. I never had very thin hair or bald patches.

I was petrified the op wouldn’t work for me, thought I’d be the statistic that failed. But I’m very proud of myself and how well it has worked for me (that feels a bit cringe but it’s true!)

No it’s amazing - well done!
I’ve toyed with the idea for about 7 years! I inherited some money so could do it now. I know I could have the sleeve keyhole so recovery would be quicker but I worry about being bed bound for ages too.

I had mine done via keyhole. I was in hospital for 2 nights then at home for 4 days. By day 7, I felt able to do the school run (someone else driving) and a food shop (as I moved to purées and was so excited!) the physical recovery was fine, I struggled more with the mental side and worrying life would never be normal again

Hi
How did you choose your surgeon?
ive contacted Spire but I think I want some sort of aftercare pack?

Have you been assessed for having a sleeve as opposed to a gastric bypass ??

My friend had one in 2018 and she says its the best thing she's ever done.

Personally I wasn't on board with her having it as she hadnt tried the gym/home works/dieting etc. She just wanted to borrow a massive amount of money from the bank and get it done so she could go live her best life and thats exactly what she did.
I didn't agree but I still supported her throughout. Was very scary to see her after the surgery, she was in a lot of pain and was very delirious. It was quite traumatising for me as her +1, I won't lie. But she's happy.

I dont know the different kinds of weight loss surgery but she has a sleeve I believe.

I haven’t been to see anyone yet? My main worry is that it wouldn’t work? Also I wouldn’t want to be a size 8 due to my age & loose skin etc. A big 12 would be amazing for me.

Hi!

The main thing to remember is that it is a tool, not a quick fix. You still have to watch what you eat, exercise etc. You could have any form of surgery and if you want to cheat you will find a way. Have you looked into counselling as the mental side eof food also needs to be addressed as well? There is a member on here who had wls years ago and has done amazingly well. I'm sure she will be more than happy to help as she is years down the line, @MarthaJay

X

Hi, I know 2 people who have had the gastric band, one went from 32 stones to 13! and the other from 18 stones to 14. What they have said is that you still have to diet, its not a quick fix at all. The one that lost 4 stones said you might as well just do it yourself, also she nearly chocked when a piece of food got stuck above the band and it was touch and go with people having to slap her on the back etc.
Have you tried the Lighter Life diet? my friends sister did this and she lost a few stones as well.
Have you tried Weight watchers and or Slimming world? I personally wouldnt want to spend thousands on surgery but I know that general slimming doesnt work for everyone.X

Curious as to those who have gone private for bariatric surgery as I work in the nhs involved in bariatric surgery , do you have some form of gastroscopy before u have the surgery ?
