Hello! I was wondering if anyone could give advice.

Im going through a break up and having to move out the home. Im now looking at renting somewhere, do I have to be in a place before universal credit will give me the housing help? Or is there a way around this as I will not be able to afford a deposit or rent without this? It’s like I need the housing help before I can get somewhere as I will not be able to rent without this?

Thank you

UC won't help with a deposit, you may be able to apply for DHP for help with a deposit but my local council won't unless you already have housing costs, not sure if that's a regulation or if it's just my council. For help with a deposit you may be best declaring yourself homeless with Housing Options as they will be the most likely to be able to help with securing a property for you

Yes I’ve started a claim and put homeless (as this is the situation im sleeping between here my mums my brothers and my friends) it’s saying it should go on by 24th January how much im entitled too
Have you informed your local council.that you are homeless?

Social housing is so much cheaper and no upfront costs, have you registered with any?

Yes I have but I’ve been put straight into band 5 (so basically there’s no chance of getting housed band 5 is the lowest priority). They are saying if I chose to leave or if my partner asks me to leave the home I am ‘making myself homeless’ although this is not the case I have no other options available.

What is the reason for having to leave ? You have to play on the whole situation or present yourself as homeless. They will out you up in a hotel and out you in top priority banding. Although you have already told them you have somewhere to stay currently telling them that has changed and you can no longer do this - arguments etc and they have asked you to leave. You have to play the system unfortunately because they will do anything not to emergency house you due to cost.
