The twins have been incredible, 16 years old and performing so brilliantly in the final, should be so proud of theirselves. They have so many years still ahead of them to keep growing and improving as gymnasts, definitely off to a flying start for them!

re Simon Biles

Gymnastics isn’t a game of football where if you’re feeling off you just get subbed. In this sport, if you’re off, you can get paralyzed. What was a mental health issue could have very quickly turned into a physical injury as well. It simply wasn’t worth it. She read the situation for what it was and was brutally honest with everyone with her abilities and mental state. If she kept going USA might not have medalled at all. It pains me to see all the hate she’s getting online from armchair gymnasts who don’t understand the sport or can’t even touch their toes. I am happy Simone stood up for herself and did what was right for her.

I see Biles FINALLY did something now.. Only Bronze...but better than nothing. The daily mail comments about her are brutal 🙈 they used to be 100% positive, I don't think people have liked how she had been able to pick and choose which one, they said you should be either 'in or out' the competition.

But they've also answered my question, I asked the other day why she didn't just go home if she's not doing anything? They said Tokyo's rules is that you have to leave 48hrs after your competition has finished so that's why she was cancelling individually. 😉

The Chinese are just on another level aren't they? They were incredible in the Women's diving and congrats to the two Chinese ladies for winning Gold and Silver. Shame about Sunisa missing out.
Biles qualified for the individual events on 25/07 and posted high scores for all so she has every right to compete in the finals. I think people need to give her a break. She didn’t steal anyone’s place as all athletes in Tokyo competed for individual qualification on floor, vault, bars and beam and her withdrawal from the other events gave the reserve enough time to prepare (the floor reserve was Jennifer from Team GB). She helped the USA to qualify for the team final with her scores.

its not really her fault she couldn't perform, imagine training your whole life for the Olympics, getting into every final for your sport (not common at all!) and then not being able to compete
she chose beam because it was the only one she could safely do, and of course, she would cancel her events day by day, why pull out of them all on day 1, then the day before you were going to compete you feel like you can...but you've pulled out a week ago so you can't

so happy for china though, very well deserved and i hope they have better luck in paris 2024
the gold medalist for beam from china looks so tiny!!! can't believe she is 16 years old!! she looks about 9 haha

I've always been a bit emotional when it comes to the Olympics but this years one just hits different. The athletes of all countries all seem to be a lot more supportive of each other. Seeing them cry and how much it all means to them makes me blub so hard.
I think Covid has made people appreciate each other more and it's made us as the audience realise how hard they all work.

Urgh nearly crying at that beam final. Great for Simone to get an individual medal and I'm so pleased for the Chinese girls, they've had some rotten luck. When they get it right, their execution is just exquisite. And I love the glitter on their temples 🤗

Exactly this. She needed to train for the events to see what she could do safely. Beam was the most logical one for her to still take part in because you can do a full routine with no twisting skills - as she did today. Can't really do that on any other (you could physically do it on floor but it wouldn't be anywhere close to a medal level routine).
She qualified for the final, so she's entitled to be there. People acting as if she stole someone else's spot all over the place.

So? Simone Biles has 32 medals including 7 Olympic medals from 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo. It’s an incredible achievement to get an Olympic bronze medal. She participated in the team heats and beam final so she didn’t do nothing. It all counts for USA Gymnastics. Athletes get injured and are removed or replaced but that’s not broadcast as they’re not Simone Biles.

I'm annoyed at how the Euros was on every single channel on the planet (that's what I felt like anyway) yet it's really difficult to find channels to watch the sport of your choice for the Olympics at no extra cost. I fortunate enough to be able to buy the channels/have them already but what about those who can't? I'm sure they would like to enjoy the Olympics too.

In my opinion, they've been really down played this year 😔 I'd rather the hype around the Olympics than a single sport which is known to cause violence and hate. I've never seen or heard of it when it's come to the Olympics.

They need to get rid of the riding element for the welfare of the horses. Those horses they had were of such a good calibre and to compete at 1.20 you should really have your shit together and not use the reins to balance, socking the poor horse in the mouth and then getting shitty when it refuses and booting it with spurs and slapping it with the whip.
Yes, I felt for Annika as Saint Boy had already been given a horrendous ride and so he didn’t want to do it. It wasn’t him simply being naughty, he had a strong bit in his mouth, had lost his confidence because of previous rider and was extremely hot and bothered by it.
The judges should have spotted this and said actually, we will swap this horse out but instead everyone stood by and watched. Equally, as a horsewoman, you should have recognised this and spoken to someone at the gate in the name of horse welfare. The horses don’t choose to be there and it may take him a long time to get his confidence back and Annika will no doubt now get a lot of hate online aswell as having her Olympic dreams disappear.
I think I saw maybe 3 or 4 people who I would say were capable riders (coming from a previous instructor/yard manager and as someone with an animal behavioural science and welfare degree).

that’s my Friday rant done and dusted 😂

Just remember guys that mental health effects everyone differently. Some people find ways of coping and others haven’t found a way yet. Biles may well have thought she was on top form until she came out and had that really awful heat where she had faults on most of the apparatus. She then may have come out and it had gotten to her and then to mess up mid air on the vault, it could have been the final straw.
Some people aren’t ready or feel they can cope without therapy, until something like this happens. Nobody knows what is going on in that young ladies head but I’m sure it took a lot to withdraw from the team and the all round final.

GB Bronze in the Gymnastics? Was NOT expecting that after the selection process and leaving out Becky Downie. Delighted for the girls! Gadirova twins just 16 🤯

It’s left a bad taste in my mouth that a lot of the Olympic events are hidden behind a paywall. I feel like that’s not what the Olympic Games should be about and it should be accessible to all. This will hurt the more niche events in the long run through lack of exposure. Money talks yet again.

My god the comments on Twitter about Simone biles are shocking. I’ve had to stop reading them. Good on the girl for putting herself first. There must be so much pressure on her. People saying “why would you pull out of the olympics something you’ve worked your whole life for?”. Well she must be feeling rotten for it to get to the point where you decide not to compete. People have no empathy. And of course piers Morgan has to get his piece in doesn’t he. He’s such a toxic piece of shit

Loved Guang Chenchen from China's routine - her leaps were stunning. A well deserved gold.

So nice seeing Simone back performing and a big smile on her face. It just shows how good she really is when she comes out with a classy, clean beam routine with zero twisting skills and still manages a bronze medal. She posted a 6.1 difficulty, which is low for her. Her beam routine in qualifications was a 6.5.

I’ve just been watching highlights of the London 2012 opening ceremony. Ive not watched since the day it happened, but god it was amazing wasn’t it? Still makes me feel emotional. Probably the last time I felt proud to be British as well.

Ngl I feel like that about most of the US team. A lot of the moves they do just look disjointed

Russia is always a joy to watch on the other hand
I agree too, as I've always favoured the more balletic gymnasts than the tumbling powerhouses. Melnikova is definitely a future world champion. I really miss seeing the Romanian gymnasts at the top level though. Hopefully Iordache can put on a good show tomorrow.

I do love the individual finals as they allow the apparatus specialists from less successful gymnastic countries to shine.

The BBC having to mention that Simone Biles is spectating was such a joke. Just focus on the gymnasts there!!! Even some of the media articles are mentioning Simone
Simone Biles is possibly the greatest gymnast in history. It is entirely normal that given her high profile and what took place this week that they would reference her. Her profile is not because of celebrity, it's because she is one of the greatest ever Olympians.

If Lionel Messi withdrew from the World Cup and was in attendance at Argentina games, BBC would mention him too.
