I was dismissed from my job last week, I did not leave on good terms with the senior members of staff, those responsible for the hiring and firing. They did say they would give me a reference, but I am concerned about what they will put in it.
If you weren't there for a long time, consider not using them - explain to future employers / job-seeking agencies that it didn't work out (you don't need to go into the details if there was no illegal activity involved). Or, if there's someone you could use who used to work there, perhaps consider asking them?

I am so bloody thrilled to tell you all that I have a job!!!

It was one of the telcos I applied to a month or so ago, and swiftly received a 'thanks but no thanks' reject letter for. They called me this afternoon and said I was on their 'maybe' list and a few people had dropped out of the February intake, so asked if I would like to join in a temporary capacity. It's temporary because they're obviously not 100% sure of my fit (read: age!), so it's up to me to do my best and make them see that I am a great fit. It's working from home, with a once-every-three-months trip down to Hamilton (about 90 minutes' drive away). The assignment is open-ended which is fine by me! 💃

Hi everyone,

After a quick and brutal redundancy from my last job, I’m in the soul destroying throws of applying for new jobs. I wondered what other peoples experiences were.

I’m finding more and more that employers have a massive, specific list of requirements and qualifications etc then you’ll get to the salary part and it’ll be like…minimum wage. Great, cheers.

Also, I’ve just been shortlisted for a job and they’ve sent me another form to fill in and it’s asking about absences in previous jobs, disabilities etc. I sometimes think they want you to talk yourself out of it before it’s even offered. They know all this personal stuff about you and then you most probably won’t even get it. Anyway, think I feel better after that. 😅😀 is anyone else on the job hunt? x

I'm looking at the moment, and finding my age (49), to be a huge issue.

Even on CVs where I've talked broadly about my skills but haven't provided any dates, I've only managed to get so far as the first interview. Feedback has been that I interview great and have all the right skills, but they've decided to go with another candidate who they felt was a better fit.

It's brutal!
Oh I know what you mean. I’m 43 and have been out of the workplace for 6 years. My daughter is now in school full time. Because of that gap I don’t have up to date references or work experience. It’s hard! Didn’t get the job I applied for so back to the job search!

Always worth looking at jobs on the railway. Interviews are strictly points based and no age discrimination. Downsides are operational is shift work (personally a plus for me) and rostered leave but plenty of more traditional roles too

I just had an interview with a company, well wasn’t actually an interview but no one told me. Once the casual chat begun the interviewer basically told me it’s a company with old fashioned systems and no money 😂.

Yes. Applied for so many jobs without even an acknowledgment or answer. I’ve got a video interview tomorrow so hopefully that goes ok. I’ve been doing paid surveys to make some extra $$.
Oh good luck I hope you get it! Are the surveys actually worth it? I hear mixed things x

Thank you! Well I joined on Friday and I’ve made about $55. So it’s paid into PayPal then I transfer to my bank account. The one I like is Survey Junkie. Good for a bit of extra cash if you have the time.

Oh man, that's hilarious! Sounds like they were pretty upfront about the company's struggles. Did you end up leaving feeling like it was a total waste of time or is there still a chance you'd consider working with them?
