Tesla - Are They Worth It?

I’m not really in to cars. To be honest I avoid driving as much as possible and I’d prefer to take a taxi, but my husband is car crazy and has been looking in to a Tesla.

Like I said I hate driving and I know nothing about cars and I was wondering if there are any car fans who knew how the stack up against the competition

The share price is bonkers, all hot air and hype but very successful at branding and marketing. Something's wrong when your electric cars have more problems than land rovers

That’s what I was thinking - is it all hype. I have no problem if it’s a good car, but if you’re going to pay over £100000 for something, you might as well get something worth while.

There was a video doing the rounds a few weeks ago, I think it was from Japan or somewhere. A truck had toppled over on a motorway and a Tesla on autopilot drove straight into it head on. It's automatic sensors just didn't see a dirty great obstacle in its way 🤣

How on earth are they allowed to still use the autopilot?? I think that seals the deal for me! Not worth taking the risk.

Last week, a Tesla was pulled over on the highway as the drivers were sleeping and it was going about 140km. When the police first tried to pull them over, the vehicle sped up!! The driver had hacked it as normally when it's on auto drive you have to touch the wheel every few seconds or an alarm goes off. I do not think they're worth the hype. Elon Musk is horrible too. He is trying to develop micro chips for human brains. He is currently trialing them on pigs.

I have a couple of issues with Tesla. And it basically all centres around the battery.
The batteries are really bad for the environment (massive carbon footprint) just to get them to the vehicle, obvs not once driving.
Secondly it will be massively expensive to replace the battery, like with anything overtime it will deplete until you can only go 100m before having to recharge.
Then lastly, but by far the scariest, these batteries can explode if you are in a collision. They have killed people in car fires because they explode which a regular battery does not do. Also the only electric car with this issue

Also, you can't drive very far distances on the batteries, like cross country and you have to hope that there are charging points on the route to your destination. I am in North America so we drive very far, like 14 hour journeys lol.

In the UK there are charging points everywhere so that wouldn't even be an issue. But I get the driving, I grew up in South Africa and it would be normal to drive four hours for a day out or my university was a 14 hour drive from home so I'd set off at 5am when I would go back home for the holidays
When my OH first came with me to SA for a visit we had to do a sleepover on the 4 hour trip as he found it too long

HAHA. The first time we were driving 14 hours, we split it up and stayed overnight at a hotel around the midway point. Now we just drive it all the way through as we want it over with. Absolute hell.

Not worth it.

My dad contemplated one for a long time before settling on an Audi Q8. The Tesla just had too many limitations and although you might save on fuel, its not worth all the hassle and problems in it. Plus, a big deal breaker was the charging during a large journey. We often travel 200+ miles to see family and having to stop and charge the car there and back would be time consuming even if it was fast charge. He wanted it for all the gimmick stuff he would use for a week then forget about after. The self drive facility is illegal in the UK and all the other features you can get on literally any other big brand car. Our local Tesla dealership closed down two years ago bc of lack of sales.

The Q8 is absolutely amazing. It has an amazing interior and is a complete head turner - I am well jealous of it.

I think he has the potential to be v dangerous. Way too much money and power.

Not worth it.

Audi SUVs are beautiful. Another nice looking one with a sharp sporty look is the Jaguar F-pace.

I can honestly say all of these comments has made it a no for the Tesla. Especially as our children will be in the car.

Not worth it.

I think I’ll have a look at the Audi. We have a Mercedes at the moment but I had an Audi when I was in University and although I didn’t use it a lot, I never had any issues.

Well I don’t have one, but there are a couple of people at work who have one. And they love it! But both are abit like mad scientists types so I don’t know if it’s more because of the novelty of having one and not the practicality’s of it. One of them is a single and the other has a family. I can ask them more about it if you like? Normally I don’t really listen to car talk but I could find out their opinions?
Like many other posters have said though, it would be the problems it may create going on long journeys. Just seems abit of a nightmare to me! I’d be worried I’d be forever charging it up! Seems a lot of hassle esp if you used it a lot.
I think it’s more for ‘boys and their toys’ and not really that practical

Thanks for the offer but I think I may have to play the overprotective wife/mother on this one and say there’s is no way me or my children are going in one! Seems just a little too problematic to me.

That’s fine and I totally understand. I always thought Volvo was the most safe car on the road, I don’t know if that helps you. Xx

I would not recommend the F-pace. I recently test drove multiple vehicles and the F-pace sounded really loud almost bus like with the diesel engin. The salesman was really taken aback when I pointed this out. I said to him that at their price point it shouldn’t be so loud. My friend has Kia which is somewhat diesely and the Jag sounded just as bad.
My favourite was the Mercedes in terms of features and power. I drove the GLE coupe and loved it. Also liked the BMW X4, it’s a bit smaller but great power and features.
I do like the Audi’s but again though they were expensive for what you were getting. Everything has to be an extra on the Audi whereas Mercedes already has most of the items and are a bit more luxury.
Saying all this I’m actually waiting for car prices to drop as they have actually gone up! I like a good deal and at the moment you are paying £2-3k more than a few months ago.
If you can I would say wait untill the new year
