Hiya, any knowledgeable tax people about?

I started a new job in October while still in a long-term job (both part time hours) and understandably started paying a good chunk of tax on the second job. I left my old job end of December but three months later, I'm still paying the same amount of tax on my new job - I actually fall under the tax threshold and shouldn't be paying any.

Last June I received an automatic tax rebate as I'd been doing some additional work to my regular job, so I figured it just rights itself at the end of the tax year.

I don't mind waiting for another rebate, but just wondered if it's normal to be paying tax like I'm still doing a second job even though it's three months since I left my old one? Should the taxing of my new job have stopped by now or will it get worked out at the end of the tax year?

Ta!

Did you get a P45 when you left your old job? If so, you should have handed it to your second job. It’s too late in the year to get your tax code amended now so when your P60 details are received, an automatic reconciliation will be done and if you’ve paid too much tax, you’ll get a repayment.

That’s how it should work anyway but if you haven’t had anything by July, you could check your Personal Tax Account to make sure HMRC’s records are right and if not, you’ll need to speak to them.

No, I filled in a new starter form as I hadn't left my old job. Thanks anyway, I'll wait and see what happens and get in touch with them if needs be.

Yeah but when you left your first job, you should have got a P45 and handed it to your second job at that point. You will definitely get back any tax you’ve overpaid though. Also, check your first payslip in April and if you’re still on a code like 0T or BR, you’ll need to contact HMRC to sort your tax code out for the new tax year so you don’t keep on paying too much tax.

If you Google "personal tax account", you can set up and log in. You can give them info and change things on there really easily. It took me about 5 mins to set up and I was able to correct my tax code and also apply for an allowance for WFH. You can see your earnings for each year and what you've paid etc. I like to have a check from time to time as I have no life haha. Hope you get sorted :)

Thanks. I actually have a log in for that but only used it for self-assessment years ago. I had a look yesterday and my new job isn't listed on there. Just my old one stating it ended on 31st Dec and the additional bank work I did a few months ago.

Looking for quite specific tax advice. I reside abroad. UK passport holder. I used to pay tax in the UK, whilst living in another country in Europe, but travelled to the UK for work. My accountant advised that as I was so often in the UK for work to continue filing to HMRC. Then my account died. His clients were passed on to someone charging 3 times more! I started self assessment. Then…Covid hit! My business immediately imploded. I had ZERO income, and without a UK address the UK government said duck your very much. For 3+ years I had no income! We moved again to Asia. Quite strict employment laws. I was offered remote work for a UK company. Under the threshold, but I want to be above board. Do I pay tax in the UK? In the Asian country?? even though technically the work is UK based and would be paid in GBP. I guess it’s digital nomad territory. What is the correct tax procedure?
