Taking away the dummy...

My son was 3 as well. He had a few dummies, only for bedtime by that age. One by one they mysteriously got holes in, where the rubber bit joins the plastic. So, when a hole appeared, nope, that ones broken now, it'll have to go in the bin, the shop won't let us have any more now you're 3!

Last one finally got a hole in......he put it in the bin himself ' don't need that now Mummy'. We had 2 restless nights where he'd wake up & look for it, but then he was fine.

He's nearly 29 now, I might tell him the story of how the holes kept appearing one day 🤣🤣
This is exactly what we did with my son when he was nearly 3. Just stopped buying new ones once they got chewed and got him to put them in the bin. Once they've got holes in they don't give the same sort of sensation so he was pretty happy to give them up. I don't even remember having any particularly difficult nights.

Don’t feel bad about it, I had a dummy until I was almost 4 and there’s nothing wrong with my teeth or speech and I had it in the day too, not just at night. I can actually remember giving mine away to Father Christmas, that’s how old I was!😂 I’m a pen chewer and a nail biter though, things like that bring some children and adults more comfort than others.
I remember giving mine away too! My mum took mine off me on Christmas Eve to give Father Christmas to send to “Sick babies”. I remember crying for ages 😂😂 but OP I wouldn’t worry like someone else said if it’s his comfort don’t feel like you should take them off him ... my niece had a Muslin that she carried round until she was over three years old and she would say where’s my cloffff and whip it out and snuggle up with 😂 kids will always be attached to something. My son loves his dummies. I said it’s gonna be a challenge getting them off him but I’m not worried about it yet he is 19mnths X

My son will be 3 in February and still has a dummy when he goes to bed at night (no judgement please - I already feel bad enough about it as it is!) I have told him that when he is 3 the dummy fairies will come etc etc.

I’m already dreading it, he absolutely loves them and takes two to bed, as he likes to hold one as well. If he’s had a busy day I will let him have them after dinner to chill and watch TV with and he is so content with them. I can tell they are a real comfort to him. He sleeps so well at night too and I’m also worried about that going bits up!

I have tried to introduce new things he could take to bed with him (teddy/blanket) etc so he gets used to that too, but he point blank refuses.

I guess I’m just looking to hear from anyone who has been in this situation - how did it go? How did your child react? Please tell me it won’t be a total tit show!
My daughter still had hers when she was 3 and was obsessed with it. She was starting pre school in the January and they said they wouldn't give it to her so I knew I needed to take it away. We had her leave it out for Father Christmas and told her that he would leave her presents in exchange, I don't know how it worked but it did and she only ever asked for it once and I just said that Santa has it and that was it. She is almost 5 now and still says do you remember when Santa took my dummy. I honestly worked myself up thinking it was going to be horrific and that no-one was going to ever sleep again but was pleasantly surprised.
Is there any way you could leave it for the dummy fairy and swap for a little present?

thank you - I think we will definitely go for the dummy fairy trick. I feel so much better after hearing that it all went well with your little one x

Thank you all so much for your advice on this.

I feel much more relaxed about this since reading your comments. I was really beating myself up about him still having one, but really dreading taking it away too! I will report back in a few months to give you an update 🤣 x

On the 1st December we put them in an envelope and posted them to Father Christmas and then when she had opened all the door on the advent calendar he would bring her a Princess Oven!! We decorated the envelope etc etc and posted it in the postbox. She was luckily absolutely fine. She was almost 3.
I worked in the Royal mail sorting office around Xmas 2018 and had a big stiff envelope with dummies in obviously and kiddie handwriting on the front assessed to father Christmas... Still makes me smile :)

My son was absolutely obsessed with his, was such a comfort for him, then when he was nearly 3, santa came and took it away because he's a big boy now and he needs it for the babies. He cried non stop for 2 days and nights (it was awful) and never mentioned it again.
