Sustainable Clothing Brands

So I inadvertently caused some commotion in a Youtuber thread about the issues with SHEIN/Temu/Wish etc and thought it best to pack it in and come on over to the Off Topic forum!

I am far from perfect and have a wardrobe full of Primark clothes from over the years so looking for help with who to turn to now that I am looking for more ethically conscious brands. Most of the ones I have found through Good On You are on the steeper side / not my style.

I know the best option is second-hand clothing such as Depop/Vinted/Charity shops, but I would really like to find a few brands that align with my budget, style, and ethical outlook! Is there such a thing?? 😂 🙏

Advice welcome!

I despise that “ethical/sustainable” seems to always mean “unaffordable” 😩. I Hope you get a good amount of replies. I’d like to know as well!

I read that the most sustainable clothes are the ones you already own . So start with what you already have .

Natural materials are more sustainable that synthetic.

In terms of brands, Celtic and Co and Molke are uk manufacturers who share how sustainable they are , if they are any interest to you.

I guess it depends what you mean by sustainable.

I could be wrong but for me, buying a ton of clothes from a sustainable clothing brand unnecessarily isn't sustainable either.

I have found Asda George, Matalan and M&S are really good for decent quality clothes that last (I actually bought second dresses from ebay that were from asda and they are still going strong. They are always my go-to now no lies. I tell everyone about asda george 😂 ) and they are pretty sustainable as far as their websites are concerned - take that with a pinch of salt obviously lmao.

The most important thing for me though is only buying what I need.

Completely understand the best option is not to buy at all!! I am a recovering shopaholic so taking baby steps towards better choices 😂

I also shop at Asda and Matalan and like you say - I like to buy items that will last a long time (currently wearing a Peacocks jumpsuit from 2016!). However I don't think those brands are necessarily very ethically-minded so it's tough! I ran Matalan through the Good on You brand checker and it wasn't good news lol. I know there's a lot of "green-washing" going on now with brands trying to look better than they really are :(

Thanks for the recommendations, I will have a browse and come back with any inspo!

Thought it would be interesting to share this:
No surprise at all that Boohoo are at the bottom of the list for how much trust consumers have in their sustainability claims.
