Surrogacy

Lily Collins has been getting some abuse for using a surrogate for her first child. I don't have an issue with her doing it. She mentioned in her book worrying about ever being able to carry a baby due to her eating disorder.

I do have an issue with celebrities who rent a womb because they don't want to lose their figure or stop working for a little bit. I also think it's disgusting when celebrities pose like in the link above in a way that someone who's just given birth would, even though they haven't.

Thumbs up to surrogates who give the gift of a child to couples that otherwise wouldn't be able to be one due to medical issues.

I agree with surrogacy as a kindness, where a sibling or close friend carries a baby for a woman unable to have children herself, for whatever reason.
I despise surrogacy where mostly American women rent a womb so they don't have to give up work, or get large, bloated and exhausted - particularly those who are not honest about paying someone to carry a baby for them.

I'm glad surrogacy for money isn't permitted in the UK.

I haven't read the book but it could be that the people who object, don't believe her reason. I'm guessing someone with an eating disorder would be terrified of gaining weight so I could see why people might not believe her reason.

I disagree with surrogacy but entirely. Nobody has the right to a baby. Would it be ok to sell a 1 year old? A two year old. When I see rich women carrying babies for poor women I'll perhaps believe it's not exploitative but I'll always consider it a form of human trafficking.

That’s a really good point. You’d get jailed for trying to sell a 3 month old infant but it’s okay if you agree before birth to sell a newborn 🤯

Anyone who thinks surrogacy is anything other than big business exploiting women’s bodies and commodifying children is very naive.

There is a trend for U.K. couples to buy in babies in the U.S. because it is completely commercialised there. They are putting a lot of pressure on the U.K. to change the law to a more commercial U.S. model.
