Stoma advice

Sorry if there is a thread on this I haven’t had a chance to properly look.
my partner has just had a stoma & I was just wanting to know the best ways to support him. He’s only had a couple of days notice so not much time to get our heads around it so I just want to be able to be the most help possible

Hi, I accidentally clicked here and seen this post and it must have meant to be as I used to have a stoma. Mine was emergency surgery without any notice, so I understand completely how daunting it is. Is there any specific questions you'd like to ask? Hope he's doing ok and healing well so far?

It must have been scary for you like that hope you are well!
I think just anything I can do to support in the first few days, he’s very fresh only had it done this afternoon but is in good spirits and seems well
Is there anything that drastically changed for you or anything that was really helpful in your recovery at all x

Yes it was very scary as I was quite young when it happened. I don't have the stoma now as I had a reversal but did have it for over 5 years...so plenty of experience. But I'm very well now thank you.

You’re already doing the best thing by just being there for him.
In these first few days, calm reassurance and patience help more than anything. Everything is very new and overwhelming, especially with such little notice. If he’s in good spirits, that’s a really positive sign.
Let him rest lots, keep things as normal as possible, and try not to worry about how the stoma looks right now — it can be shocking at first but that does settle. The stoma nurses are brilliant, so encourage questions when he’s ready.
The day-to-day adjustments come gradually, and over time it starts to feel normal — almost like it’s always been part of you. Life may look different for a while, but it really does continue and get easier. Sending you both lots of strength 🤍

Hi I received my permanent stoma in November. Ur doing the best thing by just being ter 4ur partner. Make sure he has his stoma nurse details b4 u go home and that he is happy with fit of bag he is using. I am still struggling with this which causes leaks and skin irritation. There is a Facebook private group "Stoma Support Ireland" it has been so helpful 4me and people so friendly and helpful.
Main thing is once 1st few weeks r over he will b a pro at changing stomabags and will b as normal as getting dressed every morning. Wishing him speedy recovery

thanks so much for your advice and kind words, he’s not been too well since his op and hasn’t been able to eat as of yet, just feeing constantly sick I’m not sure if this is normal or not but hopefully will see the stoma nurse tomorrow as they don’t work over the weekends. X

thank you, I’ve joined a couple of fb groups just to try and get some knowledge and understanding before he comes out of hospital. Hopefully will see the stoma nurse tomorrow so can get some more info from them.

I've no experience at all, but I've followed Mr Colitis Crohns on social media for years now and his posts about his stoma are very interesting. I've learnt a lot!
