Since there is a crypto thread I thought I’d make one about stocks/shares. Does anyone buy them and what companies do you invest in?

I’m following the reddit treads. I invested in gme in January and made 5k back then and I put some into AMC at £18.80 last week. I should’ve been more patient as I put some into AMC at around $8/9 a few months ago but took it out so a small profit.

I use Charles Stanley Direct and pay in a monthly amount. I then buy the same fund each time, i think its Vanguard 80% or something like that. Of about £3k i have put in in total (lump sum of £1k then £100 per month) its up in value by about £500.

Not bothered about the value too much as its just in there to take out when i retire, which is a good 40 years away!

Is it an isa? I was thinking of opening one once I’ve sued my help to buy isa

I invest in something called "Sharesies" here in NZ.

I started picking companies and managed funds I liked the look and sound of / were familiar to me ... and if their price had dipped, then I jumped in and bought shares at that point. I've kept on investing in those shares (providing they're still at a lowish point; if not, I've chosen other ones that are) - which are a mix of balanced portfolios and companies. So far, I've chosen well - in just over a year I've had several dividend payouts (some have been cents; some have been dollars). What is pleasing, is seeing my return on investment increasing all the time.

I have regular automatic payments going into my retirement fund as well as my Sharesies account (my retirement fund is via a managed portfolio also), which works well.

I have some small holdings in my stocks and shares isa. I started investing in a couple of penny stocks this year with a very small amount that wouldn’t be the end of the world if I lost, I’m still very green! The gme stuff peaked my interest but I didn’t get involved in that, I also wish I’d bought some amc when it was dirt cheap but oh well😂 To be honest though I’m trying to think long term rather than ‘getting rich quick’, although if that happened it would be cool. Just going to hold and see how they go. Over time I’m going to add some more reliable holdings and etfs to my portfolio.

I bought GME and AMC for a laugh when the whole stonks thing was kicking off, I also bought a load of Doge and since cashed out nearly all of it.
Id like to start investing seriously but seeing as all of my money ive made has been from joke/meme stocks so far I’m not sure where to start. Glad to be following this thread though!
