I always forget about Northumberland, because it’s where I’m from 😂 but agree also amazing so much to do and explore, if you like castles and coasts 😀

I suspect that Northern Ireland would probably be one of the least crowded and lovely places to go. It's also a lot cheaper than the mainland.

I would second the Scottish Highlands. Beautiful beaches, lots of lovely picturesque villages and towns, loads of things to see & do. You could do it as a camping/campsite holiday or as a more luxury hotel type stay.

Scottish Highlands and Islands? Some great beaches on the coast, if you have kids there is the Harry Potter train journey between Fort William and Mallaig, Nessie’s Adventure land near Fort Augustus and Loch Ness boat trips

If you are active, or prefer cultural days out or a mix of the two?


Lake District is lovely (I should know, I live in Cumbria), but if you aren't active, outdoorsy or ok with the rain it's probably not worth it 🤣

Yes, you can get a train to Penrith, Oxenholme or Windermere and there are relatively good bus services from there onwards. If you can drive, hiring a car would allow you to see so much more as well as escape the busy tourist hotspots

The train lines are the main reason we booked that area, my husband and son love steam trains lol

South west West Sussex: particularly Arundel and the South Downs national park. (lovely wooded nature reserves there.). Arundel has a nature reserve (the Wetlands), a massive castle, a cathedral, a lake and wooded hilly country walks, and a cute town centre.

There are some nice beaches in the far west of the county too. Also not a million miles from the New Forest (also lovely) and the Isle of Wight.

If you want sun, the Sussex coast is statistically by far the sunniest place in mainland Britain.

We've had some good holidays either side of Great Yarmouth. Caister and Kessingland (near Lowestoft) has been good. We also tied this in to day trips around the area. If anyone has kids under 10 then I'd recommend the Africa Alive zoo in the area.

Also if anyone has dogs- Bakewell in Derbyshire is a lovely little place and very dog friendly. Lots of B&Bs and pubs welcome dogs inside.
