I got an Uber home last night and the poor driver was telling me how terrified he is . Saying he can't have the windows down even in the recent heat as people are throwing stuff in their cars like acid and how he feels bad that his kids are shut away at home in the holidays as they are too afraid to take them anywhere. I felt so ashamed of our country it is awful that hard working people are made to feel like this.
That's funny because my next door neighbours of 5 years were Muslim and not once did they try to convert me! Whereas I've had leaflets from the JW and a Christian couple down the street invited us to a prayer evening. Obviously I lobbed a brick through their window, only sane response right?

The parents of Bebe King, Lauren and Ben King, have issued the following tribute to Bebe and all those involved in the tragic events of Monday 29 July.
On Monday, the 29th of July, our world was shattered by the loss of our precious daughter, Bebe. Along with two other beautiful souls, Elsie and Alice, she was taken from us in an unimaginable act of violence that has left our hearts broken beyond repair. Our beloved Bebe, only six years old, was full of joy, light, and love, and she will always remain in our hearts as the sweet, kind, and spirited girl we adore.
The outpouring of love and support from our community and beyond has been a source of incredible comfort during this unimaginably difficult time. From the pink lights illuminating Sefton and Liverpool, to the pink bows, flowers, balloons, cards, and candles left in her memory, we have been overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion shown to our family. The response from Southport, the whole of Liverpool, and even further afield has deeply touched our hearts, and we are so grateful to everyone who has reached out to us.
We want to acknowledge our older daughter, Genie, who witnessed the attack and managed to escape. She has shown such incredible strength and courage, and we are so proud of her. Her resilience is a testament to the love and bond she shared with her little sister, and we will continue to support her as we navigate this painful journey together as a family.
Our thoughts are also with everyone else involved in this tragedy and all those who were injured. We hope that they find strength and healing in the days ahead. To the children who witnessed this terrible event, we send our love and hope that they too can begin to heal, surrounded by the care and support of those who love them.
To the emergency services, who acted with such care and professionalism on that terrible day: thank you. Your support has continued as you have looked after our family with compassion and dedication, and we will forever be grateful for the way you have helped us through this harrowing time.
To our community, friends, and strangers who have shown us such love: thank you. Your messages, your tributes, and your presence have meant the world to us and have helped us find some solace in our grief. We are also thinking of Elsie and Alice’s families, who are sharing in this unimaginable loss, and we hold them close in our hearts.
Our hearts are broken, but we find some comfort in knowing that Bebe was so deeply loved by all who knew her. She will forever be our shimmering star, and we will carry her with us in everything we do.

I’m so anxious right now, I’ve been stressed all day in work refreshing my news app and Twitter to find out if there are any riots happening in my city. I’m mixed race and one of my fears right now is getting caught up in one of these racist mobs. I’ve cancelled all of my plans this week and just going to stay home.
I’m in absolute shock that I have to feel like this in 2024.

It's like some people are upset that the counter-protests happened last evening - peacefully - they showed that many people are against racism and hatred and will take the streets to make it clear.
As for those who think Keir Starmer was antagonizing by not talking about the "concerns" of the rioters: if the government would have linked the violence of those last nights to concerns about immigration it would have shown to the rioters that their actions were legitimate. No government will ever acknowledge rioters - no matter what started the riots. Doing so would be losing the monopole of violence and risking society sliding in anarchy. Now, people having concerns about immigration can use the legal ways to bring their concerns - including demonstrating peacefully without being racist. Nothing prevents them to do so.
As a conclusion I have been surprised those last years how so many people have accepted without a pip so much bs from the government - impacting directly their quality of life. Those who stood up to defend their rights and their working conditions (in peaceful demonstrations or by striking) got demonized. But suddenly it's ok to loot shops, attack migrants hotels, mosque and people of colour? It's just an expression of anger? Where was the anger when the government abused the covid crisis to fill the pockets of their mates, didn't give a f* about the rules they set themselves while many people had to grieve the fact they couldn't say goodbye to their loved ones? Where was the anger when various mp has been found to be sexual predators or abusing the system to enrich themselves? Where was the anger at the utter incompetence of the government to just fulfill their basic duties: education, welfare, the NHS, public transportation and so on? Is it normal that people will have to wait for years to have a chance to go to court?

But there are lots of non-rioting “ordinary” people who continue to be incredibly concerned about the impact of unchecked immigration on British society and feel that successive governments have totally ignored their concerns. That concern and anger won’t go away. I think these concerns should be taken very seriously as a matter of urgency, and I am concerned that Labour doesn’t seem to have any coherent plans to seriously deal with this issue.
The riots are disgusting. However, I am really amazed to see people on this thread who literally don’t know what any of this concern and anger is about. In my opinion that speaks to a very particular type of privilege.
If you asked someone in one of the areas where these riots are taking place, where high unemployment and lack of opportunity is combined with a very high rate of immigration in a very short amount of time, where there have been massive and undeniable problems involving muslim men and white girls, where these problems were ignored for 40 years, and you spent much time in those areas and bothered to find out about what life is like there, you’d work it out pretty quickly. NONE of this excuses the actions of anyone, of any colour, committing violent acts. But you might even be able to look beyond the “they’re all far right racists” label so casually applied by our PM. and get a bit more of an insight.
Of course most people can’t be bothered to do this, or lack the curiosity needed to try to understand what is really happening.
I pray that these riots run out of steam quickly, because I don’t think the police can arrest their way out of this. And if it continues night after night, that will make for a really frightening situation. Whatever happens in the next few days this anger and concern now has been fully revealed and it isn’t going away.
My particular concern is that we are now very clearly sitting on a powder keg and that one more actual islamist attack (such as the Ariana Grande concert or London Bridge) and we’ll see something that makes these riots look like a walk in the park. That really is the nightmare scenario.

Just seen a TikTok of a young black girl who had gone into Plymouth city centre without realising there was a protest and had to walk home past the protesters. She was literally sobbing in the street until a lovely woman noticed she was crying and walked home with her so she knew she was safe home. I couldn’t imagine the fear she was feeling because she just needed to do something in the city centre but instead those people made her feel frightened. Breaks my fucking heart that the feeling is most likely mutual amongst POC in this country, no one should have to be sobbing in the street with worry about walking home alone in broad daylight because they might get attacked for being not white. I just teared up for her, what a horrible feeling that must’ve been

The state of this country. All this rioting and idiotic behaviour is detracting from the actual issue. The governments have allowed it to get to the point it’s at. Not the police, not Muslims, the government are absolutely to blame.
Yet again another smoke screen for the real problem. We live in a country where most people are fed up. Genuinely fed up. You can’t open a letter in the post without worrying about what it entails. Who wants money from you now? You can’t get a scan at the hospital, as a women you don’t feel safe walking at night on your own, children can’t play out.. knife crime is rife with feck all really being done by it. People aren’t afraid to go to prison. I work in one, I know.
Taking money from pensioners now for their heating while giving 3bn a year to Ukraine.
The list could go on and on and it’s only going to get worse. Genuinely scared for this country.

We all now know the Southport attacker was a Brit with a Rwandan (likely Christian) background with seemingly no links to the Islamic faith and not a Channel migrant. All of the misinformation that spread from far-right activists after the attack led to these violent riots, mostly aimed at Muslim people.
Yet here we are, with suggestions of looking at Islam through the microscope as if that’s the problem... What makes some of the posters here any different to the thugs on the streets? It all comes from a place of prejudice.

The Middlesbrough Mela has been cancelled. It was due to take place next weekend. It is a free festival that is organised by the local Asian community, there is music, stalls, games for kids etc. It is normally seen as a celebration of diversity, with people of all races and religions attending and having fun. The organisers are worried that can jot guarantee safety this year.
