Selling clothes on ebay, depop etc - which is best?

I have had a clear out of clothes etc and was hoping to sell some online, which I have never really done before. I am forever buying on ebay but have yet to be a seller on there. Does anyone here sell on ebay or depop? Is is worth the hassle?

Thanks

I've used both.
I prefer Depop as I find it's easier to list things, however I always get people asking if I can sell it cheaper or offer free p&p. My clothes are usually new with tags and it's just not worth the hassle of selling something for £2 or £3. I was planning to do a boot fair to get rid of it all quickly but that was pre covid.

Normally I donate clothes to charity but lockdown has encouraged me to part with more of my stuff, some stuff of 'used like new' and branded which I think I could make a few quid back. I'll take a look at depop, thanks.

Good luck! I have loads to give to charity too, that's next on my list :)

Never had any luck with Depop, used to sell a lot of my clothes on eBay but you get a lot of people messaging you asking if you'll accept a lower amount than the starting bid or complaining your P&P costs are too high as they know it's 30p less than what I've said for 1st class etc  I always reply saying it's postage AND packaging, plus my time/fuel to go and post the bloody thing 😂 I'm planning on having a sort out and doing a boot sale.

Exactly what I used to say. Whether you are using a carrier bag, wrapping paper or parcel bags that's also a charge too . I'm not expecting £10 an item but come on! I always liked doing my decent stuff with a tracked service but no one ever wanted that either.

The internet really does bring out the stinginess in people! I always had people wait until they'd won the item before launching into it about the P&P, I wasn't expecting millions either, say £4 postage for something that was going to cost £3.20 to send 🤦‍♀️

Try Vinted too, I’ve had way more success on there than either eBay or depop. I find eBay is really for people looking to get an absolute bargain (I’ve always gotten ridiculous offers, £2 for an item that is brand new and cost £90 etc). I haven’t been on depop in a while but people using 20 irrelevant hashtags on each item and clogging up the search used to do my head in.

Vinted don’t charge any fees either, which is another thing that put me off eBay a lot.

If you do use eBay, try offering free P&P and factoring the cost for that into the main item price. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, you’ll get some buyers complaining you charged them £3.20 when the stamp says £3.10.

I might try Vinted too, thanks!

I've tried offering free P&P and then increasing the item price but then people say they still want it cheaper, can't win lol

I use depop to get rid of old clothes.

I've had lots of people messaging me wanting something for next to nothing. One woman asked if she could buy a top for £2 and have delivery free....Um no. The top was listed for £4 and an extra £3 for delivery. So you'll get a lot of people trying it on with you. I've also had people really interested and ask for tons of photos etc then suddenly disappear.

I like the platform though, they take a fee if you sell something and I've not had any problems on there. I would recommend it, just be wary of the time wasters!!

Yes I think buyers forget about the fee from Depop. Do PayPal take a fee too? I can't remember.

I might have one more go on there before it all goes to charity/bootfair.

eBay! Depop is tit & full of kids selling crap.
ive made £300 since lockdown on eBay selling clothes that were bagged for the charity shop!

Yes PayPal take fees from me too.

Yes people want something for nothing! I know haggling is common but I wish people were sensible with it...!!

Think of your audience.
If your stuff is mostly 16-24 year old fashion I’d definitely use Depop.
whereas more of the “older end” tend to use eBay.
(I’m mid twenties and use Depop to sell my old clothes rather than eBay)

Try Facebook marketplace as well and local selling groups also on Facebook. There's some really stingy people on Ebay, they want you to give it to them and make a loss in doing so. I've found Ebay does best with things that are new with tags etc. Otherwise if its a low value item/s then I just give to a charity shop. Its not worth the hassle and the cost.

I put 3 Vivienne Westwood bags on Depop, think I paid around £300 each for them. I've had them about about 2ish years, 2 were in great condition and one had a small stain inside so I said £50 and £70 each for the other 2. Someone messaged me and said they will give me £20 for the one with the small stain as they will have to pay to get rid of the stain. I'd rather keep it than sell it for that

I actually prefer eBay to Depop! I’ve had the opposite experience to a lot of you, I’ve found Depop to be awful for really cheeky low ball offers.

I also prefer the eBay app, and they do promotions sometimes where you don’t have to pay the 10% in fees.
