In her Amazon video she did mention her Caribbean family, and the happiest memories being the food. It seemed genuine, but also seems like it was a very long time ago. I wonder if they lost touch, as she doesnt really have extended family, like cousins, around. Mind, even her immediate family is now distanced.
An interesting point was made with regards to Sam and her black side, and it was more to do with possibly compensating for her dad not being around by erasing it, rather than it being her feeling ashamed by it. She also grew up with her white mum, sister and step dad. If she lacked that link, she may not really know how to explore it, or where to start. I have some issues connected with being mixed race, White and Indian. I don't really know my Indian side as my mum isn't traditional and we moved away from South Africa to England when I was young, so no Indian family around us. I also don't feel all that connected to my white side because my dad was a tit and a colonialist when drunk...and he drank a lot growing up. Also with the whole apartheid thing, I have no white family apart from dad, and my Indian side always make jokes about how I'm white. This is my experience of mixed race, and I'm not saying it hard for everyone, but it can cause a whole host of issues that have nothing to do with being ashamed.
