Hi,
My son had his GCSEs this year and he needs to resit his maths and English alongside his college course from September.
Has anyone been in a similar position with their children or themselves and know when he can re sit these? Will it be next May when the upcoming year 11’s sit theirs or can college put them through early? Thanks!

They normally factor it in to their college timetable so they'll have Maths and English lessons. It hasn't happened to my kids but I know they had friends who had to retake. I think they make the Maths easier so they do the Foundation Maths. They definitely take the exam before May. I think the first one the College will pay for but then after that if they fail again, you have to pay for the exam.

thank you.
he will be taking maths and English on Thursday and Friday mornings from home.
that’s great he will get to sit them before May.

I googled it. They resit them in November and if they fail again they resit it again in June. (that was last year though, not sure if it will change because of Covid?).

Hi
i didn’t resit my maths or English but two of my friends re-sat their maths. It was factored into their college timetable alongside their other subjects, they took the exam i think in January (as a preliminary of sorts - if you pass great if you don’t, oh well, you have another chance) and Then officially, alongside their other A-Levels, at the very beginning of May. This was in 2017 though, v much pre-covid so things may well be different. Gut feeling Says he’ll be sitting it before May at least! Good luck to him :)

This was years ago but when I started college I had to do maths as functional skills to bump my grade up. It was never an exam just lessons with a teacher once a week.

Nowadays if kids don't get a grade C or above at Maths and English at Secondary School, they have to keep retaking it at College etc until they pass.

It was years ago and it was AS levels but I remember I received my grades in August and resat one of my exams the following January.

This is a different scenario where nowadays kids failing maths and English at GCSE have to keep retaking it until they pass.

It was brought in by then Education Secretary, Michael Gove in 2013.
