Relocating to Ireland from the UK..

Hey!

I’ve just been offered an amazing job in Dublin and I think I’m going to take the plunge and move from London to the Emerald Isle! Has anyone else made a similar move? It would be great to get some tips!

Good luck, I'm jealous! You may already know this but people say Dublin is just as expensive as London, so perhaps best to keep an eye on your spending.

Ah thank you! Yes, I’ve budgeted about 50% more than I pay in London ... which is kinda insane!! I’m just looking at bank accounts and I have no idea which is ‘best’

My SIL is Irish, she and my brother live over there (not in Dublin now though, in Co Kerry which is stunningly beautiful) He says he'll never move back to the UK now. Have a look at www.daft.ie to get an idea of how much rent is. Counties Meath, Kildare and Wicklow all border Dublin and accomodation would be a bit cheaper there, but it depends if you drive or not.
The DART is the overgrown train in Dublin which goes out by the coast. Dublin is a small city really (certainly when compared to London) and the city centre itself is small enough to walk from place to place.
My brother lives in Swords in North Dublin when he moved over first. Generally 'the southside' of Dublin is seen as more upmarket than 'the northside' and is horrendously expensive to live in.
Do you know whereabouts in Dublin your job will be? If it's city centre you can commute there from pretty much any place in Dublin.

We did it. Moved from the South (uk) to the West Of Ireland. We're now back home with so many regrets. Don't rush into anything. It's a HUGE move. It may only be across the water but it's a totally different way of living over there.

I'm Irish and live in Dublin. Personally I don't think it's that different to the UK. Yes the West of Ireland is as it's more rural and there's less to do but Dublin is great. Definitely on the pricey side rent wise but that does depend where you live.

im gonna sound awfully judgmental here, where abouts in Dublin you’re gonna live/work is important

I’m going to be working in the centre and I’m currently looking at flats in Dublin 6... is that the right thing to be doing?

Dublin 6 is great, kinda expensive but super close to city centre (both walking and also busses, and the luas is in Ranelagh). Everything like grocery and pubs are on your door stop there too.

I live in Dublin and also lived in London for a few years. Can give you some pointers - whereabouts in the city centre is your job, where exactly in Dublin 6 are you looking

Also important to factor in if you will have a car, otherwise access to public transport will need to be factored in.

Ranelagh is great - access to luas, lots of cool restaurants, but it is pricey

We lived in Rathmines for 3 years and loved it. Very easy to commute to city centre (Docklands and Merrion Square for work) by bus and a short walk to the Luas. Also having several Supermarkets to choose from within walking distance was great. Still miss Morton's.
