Looking for some recommendations for some good motivational books.
I am suffering with depression & have lost all will to do anything. The thought of leaving the house fills me with dread. I do it because I have to but I wish I had more ‘get up and go’. I know a few people are inspired by some good reads & re-training your mind so any recommendations?
Not, ‘the secret’, what a load of tosh.

Psycho cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz.

Feel the Fear and Do it anyway. I went travelling alone off of the back of reading that book, must pick it up again as that was over 10 years ago

It’s not a book but the calm app is amazing. There is so much on it, daily meditations at different lengths to suit your life style/how much time you want to spend on it, relaxing music and sleep stories too! The sleep stories are so good. Harry styles does one 👌🏻😂

Meditations are also good cos there are different topics for what you want to get out of it. I took a quick look on mine there and there’s some called easing depression, 7 days of calming anxiety, panic sos etc. There’s also ones about having restful sleep. I only it recently myself and haven’t got anywhere near all of it.

Sorry I know it’s not a book but I think it might be beneficial for you. Hope you find some peace soon 💕

Speaking from experience, it is okay if you cannot get into self-help books. I am that kind of person that cannot finish a self-help book ever, I think many people are like that too, so if you ever find yourself in the same position, please remember don't beat yourself up

Hey

I’m so sorry to hear you’re feeling so low. Books I have really enjoyed are:
- The things you see when you slow down by Haemin Sunim (written by a monk)

-The life changing magic of not giving a f**k - Sara Knight (light hearted, helped me become more assertive and less bothered by what others think!)

- Option B by Sheryl Sandberg (amazing book about a woman facing bereavement after losing her husband)

the chimp paradox is another widely known book- talks about wise/ emotional mind “the chimp” / rationale mind.. very much based on DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy).

I completely agree re the secret,
Couldn’t even finish the first couple of pages 🤣

hope one of these sound good to you, take care of yourself x

Why do you think this is? Just out of curiosity. I've been halfway through one for about 6 months now 🙃

Power of Positive Thinking - Norman Vincent Peale
It’s quite religious but very persuasive and you could just change the God stuff to a higher power if it’s off putting.

Bryony Gordon's Eat Drink Run is my ultimate motivation book. Yes, it's about her running the marathon, but more than that it's about her mental health and how she got herself out of the dark place. A lot of running books are like that - Bella Mackie's Jog On is similar. One of my biggest problems when I'm in the dark place is getting myself out of the house, and running a little bit more each day helps me do it. These are the two I come back to when I need help.
