I feel like the discussion over what’s happening in the women’s boxing is, as per usual these days, somehow turning into a (anti) trans debate instead of what it actually is: a doping scandal. The two contestants on question haven’t just appeared over night, they’ve been competing in the sport for a long time, no?

It was a man beating up a woman presented under the guise of sport. It should never have been allowed to happen. End of story.

Goodness me. What has just happened?

The breeze changes dramatically as the boats come towards the end of the first lap and the blue and white chequered flag is raised - race abandoned!

Presumably because it is felt there was an unfair advantage to some teams.

That's not necessarily bad news for Great Britain's James Peters and Fynn Sterritt. They were sixth but the race will restart - we'll wait to find out how soon that happens - and they'll have another chance to lift themselves from seventh into the top three.

Talk about drama.

So..... a change of breeze that may cause an unfair advantage to some causes a race to be abandoned, but a man wants to punch a woman in the face in the boxing ring and yep, lets go ahead with that.... ok, got it!

I don't want to go off topic plus I hope this doesn't offend (I am trying to be sensitive).

If these sporting bodies insist on allowing these athletes to compete they need to have a classification for DSD/Trans athletes to make it fair. They can still compete as women - just in their own class (simlar to how they classify disabled athletes in the paralympics - they could call it Women XY and Men XX for example).

The problem is, being kind and delicate and sensitive is what got us into this mess in the first place.

We need to be plain speaking and factual when it comes to safety and fairness in women’s sports.

Not having a go at you personally, but this cowardice is literally the reason Angela Carine had her nose broken today.

It's the first boxing match with one of the female boxers who failed a gender test. They were disqualified from the world boxing championships. Happening at 11.20 this morning.

They’re not female. They’re XY males.

This is why it’s so scandalous.

They were born with a DSD condition (some would say intersex condition) and assigned female at birth because they don’t have a penis.

But they are male, with male hormone levels, went through male puberty, male physique and male strength.

The sporting bodies who allowed this are allowing women to be pummelled by men at the Olympics. And they’re justifying it by saying the boxers have F on their passports, and have been allowed to cheat in the past so why not let them cheat again? Disgusting.

Ok. Not getting into this because there’s an off topic Olympics thread for things like this and about a zillion threads on gender „discussion“. I assumed that both competitors were women who had doped with hormones (leading to rightful exclusions). I don’t understand the „they are men“ comments. Born as men, thus trans women? Women who cheated in their sport by taking hormones that gave them an unfair advantage? I guess I don’t understand the language, but again, I think I’m done with the topic.

Gender discussion is completely relevant in this case as a woman has lost out on her dream because you apparently can’t ask men to fuck off out of our spaces. I assumed it was going to be the athletics that would be full of men, never in a million years did I think it would be the boxing.

World Athletics has restricted women with DSD from competing in specific events on the track because, officials argue, that they have an unfair advantage in strength, muscle mass, and the increased testosterone levels improve oxygen-carrying capacity. It should be the same across all Olympic sports.

World Athletics need to ban all males with DSDs from all events, not just specific track events.

Always remember the Rio women’s 800m. All three medalists are XY males (yes, even Caster Semenya). There’s a lot of misinformation spread online that Caster is a woman who just happens to have high testosterone. No, Caster is a biological male and a cheat.

Look at their faces. Isn’t it obvious? And yet people have been afraid to speak up for fear of causing offence. We all know the difference between a male and female face.

It is NOT doping. It is people with XY chromosomes competing against people with XX chromosomes. In other words men hitting women.

Exactly, we have different weight classes ffs. Seems like a no brainer to have a seperate Trans Women and Trans Man category. Out of interest, are there any Trans Men competing in any male only categories?

There are categories - male and female. Participate in your biological category or not at all.

Of all sports, boxing is one where a ban should absolutely be in place. It’s not just about fairness, equality, or medals, it’s about physical safety.

Personal story but pommel horse guy is my new hero honestly 🥹 I had an utterly shit time growing up with strabismus dealing with relentless bullying and in adulthood it’s impacted my life a lot after having a failed surgery that left me with untreatable double vision. Seeing Stephen at the Olympics doing something he loves, absolutely killing it and everyone going crazy for him makes me seriously happy. I hope he’s inspiring so many people, which is such an important part of the Olympics. LOVE U POMMEL HORSE GUY!

I just saw the clip of the Chinese gold medal badminton winner getting engaged. Although it’s a sweet idea, I would probably be mad that my career crowning moment got usurped by my partner proposing!

I'm struggling to find anything that's not from today about this (or behind a paywall) but surely there's 3 outcomes here for each boxer?

1) They are indeed a man pretending to be a woman/a MTF person who has transitioned after puberty and thus retained their male characteristics at which point they should be DQd
2) They are indeed a woman who just unfortunately looks a bit more male and has a lot of muscle naturally and can compete or
3) They are roided to fuck and should be DQd

The two boxers in question most likely have disorders of sexual development (DSD, colloquially known as intersex, but that’s very outdated). They would have been born with ambiguous genitalia, and raised as girls - because no penis.

But they are in fact biological males, with XY chromosomes, and internal testes producing perfectly normal levels of testosterone for a male. Male puberty, male body, male strength, male advantage.

Not trans, not doping. The only doping going on is the testosterone produced naturally by their bodies. But it’s certainly no different to a biological female doping with massive doses of testosterone, as many did in the bad old days of the 70s (and possibly 80s?)

The International Boxing Association banned them from competition for being XY. The IOC overturned it

I don’t blame her for abandoning the match. Lots of women have been hurt when fighting against men - Fallon Fox broke her opponent’s skull and boasted about it, another female competitor got brain damage. It’s dangerous and frankly stupid to allow this just so we don’t hurt people’s feelings.
