Hi I am a disabled ( in the general sense) adult who lives at home with their parents. Recently I have been having a lot of eye and head pain which has caused many issues as my parents don’t seem to fully accept that extent of my illness and have been rude About it and have also tried to slow down my access to medical care. Recently this has progressed to calling me an outright liar and predicting that when I finally do get a appointment they will say all is well and I will get sectioned if I continue to say I am unwell. In the last few days the pain has got worse and worse and my eyes are so bad even writing this message but I cant say anything without getting a barrage of abuse and threats. I really want to go to the eye hosptial than get a check up but there is no way I can do that. So what should I do? I don’t know how much longer I can cope.

As an adult, you are entitled to confidential medical advice. Your parents have no right to speak to your GP or attend medical appointments without your consent. Why don't you schedule a phone appointment with your GP (if you are unable to attend without your parents' physical assistance) and discuss this with your GP privately. Your parents don't even need to know this has happened. You don't say what your disability entails nor if your parents have any orders/powers of attorney that allow them to advocate on your behalf. So apologies if i have misunderstood your predicament.

Are you in the uk?

Can a friend support you to the appointments?

Are you able to use a telephone?

Have you been assessed as having capacity?

Are you in the UK??

what kind of disability do you have? And do your parents have any kind of legal power over you - power of attorney for example??

are they controlling in this way over other aspects of your life?

Sadly I don’t have the privacy to be able to undertake phone appointment with my GP without them knowing. My GP runs on all day phone calls with no set appointment time given.

I have autism - no power of attorney.

I am in the UK.

And yes they very controlling on other issues,

Can you not try and use the NHS App? I’m assuming you have a smart phone? (Sorry if this is ignorant of me, I just usemy smart phone for Tattle).

You can book GP appointments through the app and see if you can obtain a face to face appointment.

Do you have any friends who you could plan to meet up with and then use this as ruse to go to the GP and possibly have said friend be your advocate?

Really sorry that you are experiencing this ♥

I know you're suffering at the moment but your GP is definitely the first port of call - I don't think eye hospitals do walk in checkups unless you're brought in through A&E with something severe. Is it possible you or a friend you trust could write a short letter to your GP and ask them to call you on a specific day or at a particular time? My own GP is a nightmare to pin down but has been very responsive when I've posted in a short handwritten note.

I’m disabled and my family is similar - I’m sorry, it’s tough. Can you chat online? My local GP surgery for example hasn’t moved back into face to face appointments since COVID but you can chat to them via a service called ‘ask my GP’ - it doesn’t have to be a telephone call. The ask my GP service also allows for further face to face appointments to be made (assuming you can get there independently - apologies if im being presumptive lol). As an adult you’re entitled to privacy and medical care, please don’t let your family make you think otherwise. <3 good luck

My Gp doesn’t offer that service. You can only submit a request and they choose if you allowed to speak to a doctor.

Sadly I don’t have any freinds to escape to.

I did go to the eye hosptial back when this started as I managed to phone 119 and got them to order that I was taken there and got all clear but it has never gone away and as got noticeably worse the last week. However I can’t pull that trick again without riskingn violence towards me.

Do you receive any benifits due to your disability?
Would that mean you would have the funds to use a taxi to get to and from your appointments. As long as it’s not too far away of course.
If a taxi isn’t possible does the hospital have a transport service in place for people who are unable (due to health) to access public transport?
Does your GP offer a message/chat service so that you can communicate without being overheard?

Could citizens advise be of any help or adult social services?

Sorry if any of my suggestions are uselessI haven’t lived in the UK for 10 years so I am unsure if these services are still available.

I simply wouldn’t be allowed out to get into a taxi Unkess it was an appointment they agreed to.

i don’t currently get benefits but I have some savings of the DSA from Uni.

What do you do in the week?

Do you go to any day centres? Do you have a PA? Are you in education?
Do you have any siblings or family members you can ask for help?

Personally I believe this to be a safeguarding issue against your own parents as they’re refusing you access to medial support.

It is not your parents choice or decision whether you see a medical professional or not. It’s yours. There’s no POA in place, therefore nothing to do with them.

Are you able to discreetly phone your local authority's adult safeguarding department and explain the situation? They may be able to help. I am very sorry to hear of your situation.

Your parents are essentially holding you hostage and threatening you with violence if you go against them.

this is NOT ok. This is wrong. You need help.
you can find contact info for services in your area here:

or you can phone the police on 111 (or if you arevin fear of violence then please phone 999)

It is clear from your comments that your parents are abusing you. This is a safeguarding issue. I wouldn't hesitate on getting police involved.

Nothing. I am not greatly physically disabled to that extent. No siblings and all family members would take their side - ice already had others been brought in to tell me that I might be sectioned p if I carry on
