P&O Ferries

I am astounded at the actions of P&O Ferries. Sacking of 800 employees only to replace them with workers being offered £5.50 an hour. Thousands of travellers/holiday makers unable to board the ferries too as sailings cancelled.

At the moment the CEO is answering questions about his unlawful act, including the disgraceful treatment of loyal staff.

He seems to think paying anyone who has worked over four months a minimum of £15k redundancy up to £172k.

I'm rivetted to this currently being shown live on SKY.

Millions of pounds have been paid to stakeholders, and this had led to today's committee asking P&O Ferries CEO why he didn't treat his staff more fairly.

Do we have any Tattlers who are involved in this mess, or know of anyone?

the whole thing is a disgrace, workers rights kn the uk are so non existant it is just awful

It's the sheer audacity of the man, who doesn't comprehend that he's actually done anything wrong. This is just the beginning of the investigation, but I really do hope that some of the workers can have their jobs back.

I mean obviously they should, but in their shoes would you really want to work for someone like that again unless the UK changes the rules so it is made illegal to do what they did?

It was illegal Emm. But if their contracts could be written in such a way that they felt safe, then it would be a great step forward. However, they are now owned by a Saudi company, so ...

It's just so unsettling for everyone. They mentioned that the majority of staff live in Jersey.

It wouldn't matter what was in their contracts. The law says that P&O should have consulted with the union before stacking the employees but the CEO admitted that they decided to break the law. They seem to be working on the basis that the large compensation payments tied to an agreement not to speak publicly or go to an Employment Tribunal will be enough to avoid any problems from the former employees.

I've seen that Johnson and other members of the government pretending to be shocked by P&O's action have promised that they will be prosecuted and could be fined millions of pounds but apparently that's just the usual hollow posturing to look like they are doing something.
