I must be the only person in the world who didn’t like the book....and thinks the tv show is okay? Connell is GREAT. But the rest? It seems kind of like what I’d have loved age 17. I don’t know. I’m usually a big fan of slow stories but I just don’t get the huge hype. 🤷‍♀️
You aren’t. I wrote this responding to you on the things everyone likes thread but it seemed to book based so it’s convenient you have posted here and I can use that same response ...
Oh my god you are literally the first person I’ve heard say that about the series , thank god! Though I should step back because I liked the book, I thought it was pretty good. Not the best book I’ve ever read but certainly an 8/10.

Before the series was released I had two main concerns. The first was that it would simply be bad, like many weak adaptations of good books. The second was I couldn’t see the benefit of turning it into a tv series, artistically anyway. It’s about thoughts, feelings , social interactions on a minute scale.

Even though they did do it well in the end, impressive as very difficult to convey that stuff, meaning concern 1 was wrong, it still doesn’t seem better than what could be done in the book. Or if not better than not providing any kind of new way of seeing the story. It basically felt like I was reading the book at times.
The acting was very impressive though especially from him. And she’s not even Irish so also impressive.

So it was good but I still don’t think it needed to be made. The way people are responding- not just here but my friends, in the media etc has made me feel a bit confused. I would like to know what it was like to watch without having read then book though. I think that might make me enjoy it more, because it’s stil complex and nuanced for a tv show.

I’m not one for binging tv shows as I have a pretty bad attention span but managed to finish this in two nights! Was going to give up on it after the first two episodes as I didn’t think it was a particularly interesting story and Marianne annoyed me. Persevered due to the hype and so glad I did - was in tears for most of the remaining episodes. Not one for crying at film/tv at all either but a lot of it hit close to home and it was so beautifully portrayed.

I haven’t read the book so I had no idea what to expect but I binged it in 2 days and absolutely loved it. The acting was incredible and I felt so invested in their relationship. I can’t wait to read the book now!

I read the book after seeing the show, and couldn’t see what the fuss was all about with the book.
I imagine if you’re a fan of the book, you’re more than happy with the show!

I enjoyed it although not all the episodes (hated the Sweden part). I then read the book but hated the writing style. What’s with no speech marks? Also thought the book ending was very abrupt but it was better in the tv adaptation.

Superb acting.

I said to my daughter I wonder how it would have been received if we weren’t in lockdown? A lot of the younger generation probably wouldn’t have watched it if they were out socialising! I think it’s become a huge hit as everyone is stuck in isolating with not much to watch!

I watched it all in one night, I couldn't stop. I really enjoyed it. I had a similar relationship in my teens - early 20s and it ended with him moving away so I cried like a baby watching this. I've ordered the book to see how it compares, I'd never heard of it before.

Anyone watched this? It's an adaptation of a book by sally Rooney. Modern day love story. Watched all 12 episodes over the weekend. Loved it. Brilliant acting by Paul Mescal (connell) and Daisy Edgar Jones (Marianne). Just wanted to bang their heads together and to get them to communicate. It made me really emotional and still thinking about it now.

I watched all episodes in one sitting... was only meant to watch two, stayed up till 1.30am. I was an emotional wreck afterwards. Had no appetite for two days, felt like I had been dumped. The acting is superb and it’s beautifully filmed. I’ve watched it again, this time no tears haha. There’s so many bits I can relate to, also made me realise how much I miss kissing and intimacy. I’m very very single so I really noticed that. I plan on watching it for a 3rd time as it’s the one thing I’ve loved since lockdown

I Wanted to like it but didn’t :/ maybe I should of read the book first. But the story line just seemed boring and as if there relationship was based off of sex and misunderstandings/ lack of communication. The acting was great but I just don’t get the hype. I liked the depth of Connell’s character, I liked how he juggled work, mental health, finding uni hard etc and how his hardships were portrayed

I loved it until about the 7th episode. Found it a bit tedious after that and didn’t like the ending :( absolutely loved the two main characters though!!

I adored the TV adaptation of Normal People. I hadn’t read the book so it was new to me, although I had heard of it and the hype around it. Connell is gorgeous and so is the chain around his neck! 😂 For me, I was left feeling that it shows how people come into your life for a period of time and allow you to learn things about yourself. Life doesn’t always go to plan or have the perfect ending and that was what I enjoyed most about the story. It was beautifully acted too.

I didn’t like the book either, I bought it for kindle when it was 99p, I only finished it because a friend had loved it and recommended it.
I have watched the first episode and am not sure if I will bother finishing it.

Haha I follow it.

I'm managing to eek it out. I'm enjoying it. Not Loooooving it but it's an hour a day I'm taking for myself to watch two episodes. I don't know how people have binged it, it's so intense.

It does remind me of life from 17-19 and the way relationships would go because of the lack of communication. Connell is great.

Their relationship also reminded me of something I heard on a podcast. That soulmates aren't you're ever lasting love, they're a mirror to yourself and they come in and tear your life up a bit and help you grow. And that reminds me of Connell and Marianne .

Absolutely this. I loved the way they ended it - bittersweet and uncertain which is exactly what real life is. I hope they don't do another series, it doesn't need it IMO, just leave it on a high.
