I am discussing this over a number of threads and i thought it might be a good idea to set up a separate thread.
I am currently going through a kind of break up from a narcissist. It has been very painful.
I feel so ashamed that I allowed someone like this into my life.
I'm hoping other people can share their stories and maybe we can swap some coping mechanisms.
Thanks x

I was brought up by a narcissistic father. Its been 5 months since I decided I didn't want him in my life anymore. I completely understand the pain of realising you are better off without someone you love in your life because that person is destroying you. My father had destroyed me as a person by the time I was 7.

I was led to believe I was fat, ugly, lazy, loud, spoilt, unimportant, unlovable, useless, a joke. I became very hypervigilant and can sense how someone is feeling which I think I learned from living with an emotionally unstable maniac who loved nothing more than to provoke me to get a reaction, to ridicule me or to take his mood out on me.

It was only when I visited friends houses that I realised your dad screaming 'you fucking idiot' in your face over and over because you spilt a drink or something or starting an argument for no reason wasn't normal. But still my mum said he's stressed with work and as my dad always reminded me nobody works as hard as him! It also made me question- why do their dads love them and mine doesn't love me? Why do their dads smile at them and hug them? Why doesn't mine? Why do their dads care when they are sad and mine tells me to grow up with my silly little girly problems.

I believe this relationship was the root cause of my eating disorder, as well as the reason why I couldn't hold down a relationship with a man. I still struggle to be around some men and find it hard to look them in the eye etc.

My tip if you are not sure who you are are (because narcissists can erase our personalities) is to write down a list of things that truly make you happy and it can be as simple as you like. This will help you to build a picture of who you are and also can be used as a reminder on bad days of something you can do to make yourself feel a bit better. Things I have on my list are walking in the woods, singing to Kylie and Jason, going for a mcflurry, watching corrie, chatting to my kids, meeting friend etc.

Also surround yourself with people who are like you and make you happy. I have cut off nearly my whole family and started making new friends which has been a game changer.

I can completely relate to the feeling of shame. I can't believe it took me to being nearly 40 to realise that what this man was doing to me was abusive.

Many years wasted trying to impress him and to get him to love me. Pandering to him to make sure we are ok and that he is not cross with me. Im also ashamed because can you believe I put his importance before my own children and husband!!!?

I hope you all forgive yourselves for not realising what was happening. Even though I will never forgive myself for not realising sooner.

Although healing is so important I do find that reading too much about narcissistic personalities can be a bit obsessive and can sometimes make me feel worse as when I remember something as I have to re-live it.

I have spoken about this on here before a few times over different threads. I was in a very brief relationship with a huge narcissist and tbh the red flags were there from the beginning.

Sorry for the essay I am about to type. I have basically wrote this on a thread I started months ago needing some advice, so I have just copied my original post

we broke up about 3.5/4yrs ago after knowing each other a year and dating for a few months.

he wanted to see me on his terms, but he would then moan about it because he would prefer to be with his friends drinking. He was negative all the time, complaining all the time, it was always about him. Everything was a problem.

I didn’t text him back once so he deleted me from Facebook. He would then add me again. He would leave group chats, he would block and unblock. Childish and huge red flags, such an idiot I was.

Everyone told me what he was like but I didn’t listen. When we broke up I was still there for him, his emotional punchbag, running after him. He told me “I’m single I can do what I want so move on”, think that’s when i realised he was just using me so moving on is what I did. I put major space between us. Got myself into a good place mentally. No contact.

Months later I met my now boyfriend, my ex saw I was happy and back he comes ready to try again. He bombarded me for months, hundreds of messages a day, contacting my friends, family, my boyfriend, his family. getting his friends to ring and abuse my boyfriend and I. We changed numbers, locked all socials down but fake profiles would just appear. Then he would threaten suicide knowing I wouldn’t ignore that, telling me he would end his life if I didn’t speak to him or go back to him. It was every week so I had to get the police involved who would go round to check on him. He was told time and time again by so many people to leave me alone and to get help but he would lay low for a while then come back on the scene again. He added all my family and my boyfriends. Pretended he needed a tutor so added my brother wanting my brother to tutor him. My brother didn’t even know who he was. He got drunk and started bombarding my brother, sister, my boyfriend’s family etc with messages, so they all blocked him.

so many other things like the constant name calling about my weight, appearance, family, telling me to stop eating and go running, how I’d huge thighs, I was a laughing stock and everyone hated me etc, I have no friends, my family hate me, I’m ugly, smelly, a money grabber, a tramp, a slut. things I’d told him in confidence he shared with everyone. He always dropped hints that he knew my new address. He literally manipulated so many people into thinking he was a good person whilst behind closed doors he was destroying my mental health all because I tried to get on with my life

Even now to this day he will still randomly send emails with full stops in the title or emojis even though he claims to have moved on.

He did a real number on me, but each day I grow stronger. He is someone else's problem now and I feel so sorry for them.

Big hugs to anyone who has go away from a controlling narc because it isn't easy. xx

I left a relationship with a narcissist a year ago. We were together for 10 years. Financial, mental and emotional abuse with 1 physical incident where he spat in my face, not just once but 3 times. We have a son, whose 7. This is probably the hardest thing I've ever been through. I didn't have any mental health issues before meeting him, I now suffer with anxiety and low moods. Certain things trigger me, my dad shouted at a football game last week and it tipped me over the edge, I can't cope with men shouting. I go back and fore with blocking him as we have some form of contact to arrange childcare arrangements. He's currently blocked. He doesn't provide financially for his son at all, I work full time, he claims benefits and is only on £200 less than me per month yet doesn't give me a penny. I can't go down the child maintenence route as I wouldn't be entitled to anything, it's sickening. He still sees his son, every weekend however I provide the food and drinks while he's there. I've never met a more infuriating man, everything is my fault, he won't take responsibility for anything. My head is honestly fried with it all.

I need to vent and I have nobody else to turn to.

It's the first weekend in ages that my Mum is off work and so she's coming down to see me so we can spend some time together (go for a walk, coffee, nails and to browse the shops for her bedroom make-over), I told my boyfriend this morning and he got into such a weird mood. He stormed out of the room as I was talking to him, then said how the relationship isn't for him because things happen (even though I tell him the plans I don't think he really listens). I said if he was causing such a fuss, I'll call my mum to cancel and he snatched my phone out of my hand and then said "look at your face it's like I did something bad like I hit you". I just stood there in disbelief over how he's acting. I explained it's the first weekend in ages my mum has had off and I want to spend it with her while he stays at home to get better. He said I have my priorities wrong for wanting to get my nails done and thinks she is driving down purely to take me to that appointment (I don't drive). He's in a mood with me after he got home late last night and woke me up - I'm a bit of a grumpy sleeper! But I apologised this morning and he's still being really weird with me. Also because I took a covid test last night and this morning to be on the safe side with my mum coming up, he got annoyed with me for taking them even though we have some more on order - which I explained over and over.

I had my first week back in the office this week and even though I have been very anxious about the return, it felt nice to get out of the house and feel somewhat normal. He's been ill with Covid this week (I'm testing negative) and got in a mood with me because I didn't check on him all day (I barely had my phone on me as I was so busy) - on the way home he then said "I wish you had just found me dead in bed" when I got back. I also won an award in work and he said he didn't care - later he asked me questions about it, but when I got in the car so excited to tell him that was his response because I didn't check on him or look after him (I offered to make him tea before I went to work - and then looked after him when I got home).

I'm not sure what the point of my post is, but he's really made the morning feel very sour and I tried to ask what the problem is, but he just deflects it and points out what I'm doing wrong (I'm not normal, I'm stupid etc.). I feel like just curling up and crying, but I just want to get out. I know when my Mum arrives there will be a really weird atmosphere and I don't open up to her about what's going on - but I'm sure she can tell by the look on my face.
There’s a lot of red flags here. He sounds like he is manipulative, jealous and controlling. I’m glad you didn’t cancel on your mum. Let her know what is going on. I never told my mother when things like this happened to me. I often think if I did I wouldn’t have stayed with my ex for so long and would have saved myself a lot of misery! Someone else’s perspective could really open your eyes to unhealthy things like this is your relationship, so you can see what is and isn’t normal.

I was raised (use the term loosely) by one, does that count? A narcissist and her enabler.

I’ve never had the mental capacity to fully deal with her or what she’s done, I chose to move away and go low contact instead. So I can’t really offer resources, but I do find reading posts from the Reddit forum RaisedByNarcissists comforting. To know that what I experienced/still experience is real, and others ‘see’ it too.

Hi all,
This is my first time posting on tattle.. my relationship ended today after 5 years and I’m an absolute mess. He has NPD and although he was in therapy during the end - the whole relationship was a nightmare yet so consuming. I’m so embarrassed that I let someone treat me the way he did. He did horrible things like cheating, financially abusive, would spread private photos/ information about myself to others, lying about everything (would deny literal evidence in front of him), I was gaslit so much I couldn’t work out what was real and not anymore, he constantly oversteps boundaries, lashes out in ager and I was to blame for it all. No ownership ever for anything

This however isn’t my first rodeo with a narcissist. Unfortunately I grew up in an abusive and narcissistic household. It made me sick to realise that the relationship that just ended literally made me feel the exact same as when I was a child. So afraid all the time of doing the wrong thing and feeling responsible for others emotional states.
I recognise as well that the reason why I’m attracting ‘gems’ like my ex is because of the trauma with my family and me trying to ‘rewrite’ the story which is for me to resolve.

I’m glad it’s done but I’m now starting from what feels like rock bottom. I’m in debt, I haven’t worked in years, my mental health is so poor that I struggle to go outside 1-2 a week because I’m afraid of everything, I don’t eat and struggle to sleep. I’ve isolated myself from friends and family. I hate looking in the mirror. Not to mention this is happening during lockdown.

What pulled you out of these tough times if you’ve experienced similar?? I get really afraid I’ll never believe in myself enough again to challenge my fears and progress past this.

Also, thank you to everyone who has talked so far in this thread. It’s really helped me realise I’m not alone. Hope you all stay well xo

Hey - I’m not sure how to reply to this but felt compelled to, firstly if at any point you feel scared or unsafe you can ring 999 and you will be looked after.

Secondly, please tell your mum. I don’t know what your relationship with her is like but it sounds really lovely and your weekend plans sound fab. This isn’t normal and rollercoaster emotions or demands isn’t normal in a relationship, there was no need for him to pull any of that shit this morning.

What’s your situation? Im guessing by finding this thread you’re aware of his personality / issues, what do you want to do? Like if a magic fairy waved her wand tomorrow what would life look like? xx

Just had to write something on this thread because only people who have had narcissistic mothers will understand and not think I’m a cruel hag. My mum is in her 70s and is quite frail and as she says lonely. Back when she was in her 60s she said she wouldn’t help me with my kids as I’d made my bed (single mum after leaving an abusive marriage) and so I should lie in it. Now with her being lonely I bet she’d love my kids around her now and me. It feels like karma.

I have actually listened to a few podcasts on Family narcissism. I think it would be alot harder to deal with so I do really feel for you.
It's for the best to distance toxic family members.
Do you think it has had an effect on you?
Oh it has fundamentally shaped who I am, yes.

I regularly neglect my own basic needs in a weird attempt to prove I am NOT selfish like she is. It’s taken years of therapy to even be able to identify and verbalise when I’m experiencing feelings, I just pretended they didn’t exist because they may as well not have - nobody was around to support me with them anyway. She’s belittled my ambition so much, I find it really embarrassing to ‘try’ at anything. Like who do I think I am for wanting more for myself, for thinking I’m good enough to achieve stuff? Battle with that one almost daily. But on the flip side she does also like to brag about those achievements, as if they are a reflection of her great parenting. In reality everything was much harder for me and anything good about me or my life now is IN SPITE OF how I was raised.

And then in more practical ways, I was a vulnerable teenager because of it, which then resulted in me being groomed online by an older man who, shock horror, turned out to be a narcissist too … Few wasted years with him.

But it’s a complex relationship and I don’t feel able to fully cut her out for reasons I’m not able to explain even to myself. The only way I can exercise control is to limit exposure - I see her maybe three times a year and ignore a lot of her messages, I’ll respond maybe once a month/six weeks.

I was raised by a narcissist and I’m now married to one. I had suspicions for years about him but recently stumbled upon an article about covert narcissism and it is literally him. I recently decided to leave him but haven’t plucked up the courage to tell him. Also finances are an issue and we also have children. He is going on like everything is normal despite the fact I have completely changed my persona since I decided to leave him. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I am bracing myself for an awful split but I know it’s what needs to happen and that I deserve more as do my children. I also suffer from mental health issues which makes everything really tricky- he does not care or understand obviously. Sick of life with him ans can’t wait to get shot of him but everything I’ve read and heard says I have to bide my time. It’s exhausting.

Ive just lost my best friend to her narcissist new boyfriend. I was obviously a threat to him, especially as I could see right through him.
My heart is broken as we were best friends for a long time and I was there for her and her 2 children whenever they needed me. He came along and months later im out the picture.
Ive tried to send out an olive branch (presents for the kids birthdays) and ive not even had so much as a thank you from her.

I was raised by a narcissistic parent (mother) and ended up in a long term relationship with another narcissistic person. For many years I thought that was normal and just got on with it.
I am now free as that relationship ended and in regards of my mother, I am well far from her and she knows the bare minimum about my life.
I am now making some progress and my panic attacks are less frequent. Some days I even feel happy and light.
All I wanted to say is, getting away from someone disgusting like a narcissist is possible. It won't be easy but it will worth.
If someone needs a chat, I am always here ❤

Thanks @Lana.lee and for posing that question - my instant reaction was no.

This morning he came to talk to me about something and then got onto the issue about the mask. To put it lightly, he said I "lacked critical thinking" and how my reasoning for wearing the mask as personal choice annoyed him and didn't make sense, he said "I'm either too f-ing smart for you or too f-ing dumb for you", then went on to give extreme examples of some random stuff. Honestly by that point I just stopped listening.

Even now many hours later, I can't help but feel just a wtf over the whole conversation. I held my ground as much as I could and at parts just laughed at how ridiculous it all was. Aside from that, I've had a nice day with my Mum. Oh and straight after the convo, I did a workout to release all that tension and built up energy and WOW did it feel good!

Thank you once again for everyone's comments and support - it means so much to know I'm not alone.
I have just read your situation from start to finish, you haven't mentioned children once so I presume there is none. The only thing I can say to you is Run ,don't walk, run.
As extreme as that may sound its coming from someone who was in excatly the same situation as you, now its 10 years later and I'm still stuck. Minus the family and friends.
He will suck every form of your being.
One good day dosnt equate to the 6 bad.
It's a vicious circle and dosnt get better.
I too was once like you, turning blind eyes to comments made regarding my weight, my family and my friends.
Making so many excuses to everyone for his behaviour or worse hiding it from them and pretending it didn't happen.
Now here I am 10years later, 2 children, no friends, no family and still involved daily with a manipulative old man that never changed the ways.
I'm on a fake profile, haven't had any form of social media in 10 years because he didn't agree with it, despite him having profiles. Is this what you want? Men like him don't change, if anything they get worse with age. I'm just a shell existing for my children.
Please get out when you can 🙏

I have been listening to so many podcasts. The guy I was involved was such a basic text book narc, every podcast I listen to, I swear they are talking about him.
I have bad days, but it's getting a bit easier knowing that it's his issues and I can't take the discard personally and his new supply will soon be in the same situation as me

My narcissist is my mum. I’m at the point now at 46 with 2 children of my own to walk away. Has anyone done this with a parent?
Yes thank god for lockdown I say (because she stopped coming around) that then gave me the distance I needed to evaluate our relationship.
I think the turning point came when I realised that I was married to a full on narcissist.
I thought about my life (I am 43) and honestly I felt almost as if I'd been groomed by her and conditioned to accept mind games gaslighting and lack of love.
So when I met my husband (and it all happened very quickly a whirlwind romance) I got that immediate connection and sense of familiarity....you feel like you're known them all your life?
That's because you have!
He is frighteningly similar to her controlling yet evasive money obsessed and greedy never appreciates anything...yet stingy with others..fake what I would call insincere charm that at the same time draws people in because they both know how to read people and discover their vulnerabilities?
Neither of them is ever responsible or accountable for anything it's always someone elses fault (usually mine because I fitted that role and was desperate for validation).
So during lockdown when I had zero help from either of them and full on responsibility and getting so tired and frustrated that I'd end up constantly ill (which of course was my fault because I am weak) I decided that the one thing I could do was to deal with the actual source the original pyschic vampire my mother.
When I finally got the courage (on my birthday) to tell her my husband was abusive she listened and betrayed no emotion and then rang up my husband behind my back and started the same old dialogue that she always does and pretends to be worried and frames me as the problem.
What are we going to do about ######

So that was it my heart calcified....I decided then that I would cut her out one way or another....

We had one last meeting....she just walked into my house unannounced my body straight away feel very nauseous....

So that was it the feeling was too intense to ignore (thank god for my body finally giving me the push needed).

Since then she's tried writing letters sending gifts phoning my husband crying and sending text messages but I don't respond (I think I've gone cold turkey) and tbh I never will.
I don't want someone in my life who makes me feel ill.
Dealing with my husband is bad enough sometimes although the good thing is that he works long hours and I don't have to see him much!
He is like a (as I said before) lightweight version of her but more childish (I think narcissists are immature people) and condescending...(sometimes inwardly I just laugh at him because he can be so pompous).
I find yoga and meditation help to reclaim my headspace and create that all important distance?
One thing at a time one step at a time...I realise I don't have the relationships to people that I would like or a first for me (deserve) but I try to remind myself that I'm not to blame.
I got caught in the narcissists net....they can actually brain wash you into accepting their version of reality so that you see the world as a hostile almost dangerous place that isn't safe.
How is it safe when all your boundaries have been smashed to pieces? Or worse you were never really allowed to develop them in the first place?

So if your even considering cutting her out I would say do it narcissists never really contribute anything they only take and drain you.
Also as I found out to my cost she never really fancied being a grandmother it cramped her style and reminded her she was old (there again the narcs inner child the one that doesn't want to grow up and lose the sense of being the centre of the universe) so she never helped out.
Would occasionally grace us with her presence talk down to my children (as if from a great height) never took them out or babysat or played with them or related to them as people.
Just sat there expecting to be fawned over....so my children have never really had a grandmother and well it's the same as me never really having a mother...
As you probably know they just wreck havoc and cause discord.... I have never had a normal life and my grief has hit me very badly especially this week that to a certain extent my children haven't had a normal or comfortable or secure life either.
This is despite me bending over backwards to try to compensate....which didn't work.

Just ask yourself is it really worth it?
Also the horror that happens when as I did you get a sense of history repaying itself?
Break the cycle if you can I broke at least part of it and yes i grieved for it and yes I've felt so lonely and lost but the way I see it once you open your eyes to what is going on you can never really fully close them again....?
Unless delusion is a place you are comfortable with? Or constant numbness or a feeling of cognitive dissonance.....

No one deserves to be reduced to that to feel so crazy or fragile that they can't even trust themselves anymore (and I had moments like that) but I always came back to reality.
I won't let them win (or at least not completely) and I want a better example for my children.
So take care do what you can listen to your instincts
and intuition find the inner voice that can hopefully help you to get in touch with what your really feeling (And not just what they want you to feel) and try to trust yourself and do what you can?
I wish you well sorry about the long post or if I'm oversharing too much but I kept all this hidden away from people because she turned my family (growing up) against me and I could never tell people how bad she made me feel or get them to believe me?
That's because she was daddy's little girl and doted on and spoilt and vain and domineering and yet they all hung on her every word she ruled from a young age....and has expected to ever since.....
Great for her but terrible for me who was always consigned to the shadows.....and that's literally all I was just a shadow projection her own inner demons and darkness that she never admitted to but would I gladly play that part?
I had no choice....and I have spent most of my life almost as a lurker too afraid to be seen or heard finding myself in various degrees repulsive and unlovable and repugnant...I still feel like I have that shame.....but it lifts occasionally and I catch a glimpse of a different possibility?
One that doesn't involve self hatred....

I am reading You're not broken....by Christopher Michael Duncan it's giving me solace and I repeat that phrase to myself whenever I feel threatened which is quite often (my nerves can play up) and it helps....it soothes....it's a rejection of maternal brainwashing (my father was just her enabler another sychophant).....

I know at least I've taken the first steps (often the hardest) if any of this speaks to you know that you can do the same if you feel that you either need or want to....

I don't consider myself an example to others or especially unique or interesting or brave but I do know that anyone can be pushed to their limits when enough really is enough....it's best not to leave it to get to that point but sometimes we get so consumed by something or someone that it's hard to break free.

So be gentle with yourself do not judge yourself hey judge them instead! (,It's a great temporary release) and most of all listen to your body.
If you feel in any way like I did that your in the presence of a predator then either create distance or if like me that isn't enough cut her out?
She will most likely try to hoover you back in or bring out the flying monkeys (as I said she even got my husband to do her bidding).....
At least forewarned is forearmed.....

Good luck I hope I've been helpful and I wish you all the best.

My narc has tried to come back into my life after a month (where is blatantly told me he never wanted to see me again)
Before I would have been so happy to see him return, but this time I did alot or soul searching and I'm having therapy. So now I feel a bit more in control and I also have done all my research about narcissists. I haven't engaged this time and I feel so much better about it
