Moving House.... bad landlord reference?

I need some help; I’ve been nominated for a property with the local council & they are conducting references as of tomorrow. I have a reference when I am which will pass like flying colours (lifetime tenancy and no rent arrears) however as I’ve only been here 2 years they need to ask for the previous property where the problems lie.

I hired two removal men to clean & clear everything from the house (instructions were left as I’m a single parent had two school runs to do & care for my Nan and grandad also, so the removal men were doing me a favour. However, the check out report was awful. They left a lot of stuff & left the house very untidy. Yes my fault, I paid them upfront & i will now more than likely be given a bad reference for this reason. Rent was always paid on time it was the check out that’s the issue. The guys are now out of business & the phone numbers have been disconnected.

How can I explain my corner that yes I was the tenant, yes I take responsibility of the check out of the property but it was unintentional?

I’m worried I’m going to lose this house for the sake of two guys that ruined it for me. Will my current reference over ride the negative?

If they have gone out of business etc than how would anyone be able to get in contact with them to even obtain a reference??

The removal men have gone out of business.
The landlord was via an estate agents.

They can still obtain a reference.

Aw, sorry, I misunderstood. if the rent was always paid and there were no other issues I wouldn’t worry, particularly as that’s the older of the two references.

I doubt something like that will cause you a problem. They will be looking for anti social behaviour etc I would imagine.

Did you get your deposit back? Most references are very basic now a days, did they pay their rent? We’re their any disputes with neighbours? Did they lose their deposit? And would you rent to them again.

they took money out of the deposit for the removal of items but yes I did get some of my deposit back.
Yes, paid my rent on time - no dispute or issues with neighbours.

I used to work in property management so we had similar things happen. My suggestion is to speak to the letting agent and explain the situation and hold your hands up and say yes we messed up when we moved out and should of checked first before allowing handover. At least then you are more likely to get them to give you a better reference. Otherwise all that will happen is when it says would you rent to them again they will say no. If you haven't spoken to them first they aren't going to contact you and it is not going to affect them giving you a bad reference.
