Mike Jeavons, the week on guy

Am a big fan of Mike (and his cat Basil). Just been discussing on another thread how much better be did a paid promotion for Muscle Food than a (laughable) slimming channel.

Mike reveiws online goods and also spends a great deal of his time trying a week on certain restrictive diets.

Over the past few years he has lost loads of weight (the catalyst was the wearable towel - check it out) Mike is witty, but loves to moan. I would much prefer to watch Mike than hate watch someone else.

I’ve watched Mike for a long time. He went a bit overboard on the Week On’s imo after a big break from them but I do still enjoying watching. Grace seems really nice too. Basil is obviously the star though!
The English to American song pops in to my head all the time 😂

Oh I LOVE him!!!! I didn't think anyone else on Tattle would! I don't tend to watch many of his week ons because when he had that one that went viral he sort of milked it and I got bored (cos most of his week ons are all the same and he moans a lot!)- his infomercial videos are hysterical though. I rewatch the Doggie Doo video all the time, and the ab belt one. I also have a bit of a crush on Grace

I also really like Ashens who does similar style videos :)

I’ve watched him for years and enjoy his Infomercialism videos, but I agree he’s gone overboard with the Week Ons. They seem to get decent enough views so I guess that’s a motivation. However, they are way too long for me to bother with - generally 10-20 minutes per episode (with one I saw being 30 minutes!), that’s at least over an hour per week. I feel like most episodes could be about 5 minutes long

His Infomercialism videos are better: funnier, to the point and not all the same. At the start he was accused of copying Ashens which I thought was a bit of a reach, and I say that as a big fan of Ashens. I loved when people accused him of copying everything about Ashens’ Doggie Doo video, and he just replied with a link showing that he’d uploaded the video (to another site) before Ashens

Did his other ventures end up going anywhere? I believe he had kickstarters for a storytelling game and also a fantasy novel aimed at kids?

I’d forgotten about the Doggie Doo accusations, his reply was perfect. I really like Ashens too.
I gave his book, Viral, a try. It started off pretty good but I didn’t like the second half. He kickstarter card game came out a while ago but I haven’t anything of it since so assume it didn’t take off! He released a children’s book, something about imaginary friends If I remember correctly. Again, I haven’t seen it mentioned recently though I’m sure it was supposed to be a series.
He has been doing a writing degree though so I imagine that takes up a lot of his time.

I didn't like the sound of viral, but only because it reminded me of the plot of a Black Mirror episode.

I agree the week ons are so long and some of them, I swear he makes himself purposefully miserable. E.g. in the juice week on he had three piddly little glasses of juice a day! Whether its because he thinks people click for misery, I don't know. but I personally find it really off-putting 'cos most of it is just him being grumpy/hungry/moaning. Lol! I did really enjoy the week ons where him and Grace had a fake baby and he had to go through pregnancy though - I really thought that was going to end with a pregnancy announcement!

He reviewed the Egg Master, same as Ashens, so had Ashens come into the video - I assume to stop the accusations (missed those!), I found it v funny. :D

I watch Barshens too (Ashens sort of.. spin off channel? Finished now :( ) - I really wish Mike had popped up in it. He was in Ashens' film so I thought he would!

I agree about him making himself miserable on purpose on the Week Ons. Obviously it started as him crash dieting to quickly lose weight which made him genuinely miserable, people liked it in a schadenfreude sort of way so he started acting up to it... I feel like he needs to evolve though as novelties wear off

I loved Barshens too (and Ashens’ film was brilliant!). Ashens and Barry still collab, and Eli / Paul are on Biffovision now. Wish they’d kept going with Barshens though

I’d love to see Ashens and Mike do a video together, I just searched and Ashens did briefly appear (in person) in an Infomercialism video. I wonder why they haven’t properly collaborated as they produce similar content, must have a crossover with fan bases and likely live relatively close to each other? It does strike me as a bit weird

Black Mirror is one of my favourite programmes so probably why I liked the sound of it 😂

I liked Barshens but really went off Barry Lewis. In the Cheap Show podcast, Eli and Paul talk about how Barry is a twit to work with and that didn’t surprise me.
From what I’ve seen Mike and Ashens get on and work well together but Mike doesn’t really do videos with other people (except Grace) so maybe that’s why more hasn’t been done together?

I find it really interesting you said that. I don’t listen to cheapshow (I really want to but I can’t listen to it, I tune out!) - it doesn’t surprise me either. I don’t know how much MVK you watch but Barry was a head then. Basically at one point he was talking about moving away from doing YouTube videos at home, got a really professional cameraman in, converted this barn nearby and the result was some sort of Jamie Oliver wannabe! It really was so unlike the videos he’d gotten famous for and a majority of his viewers told him as much. He did change it back to normal but ever since then I got the impression he really resented his audience for being against the change. Then Barshens. Where do I start. The official line from the Barshens team was that costs were running too high and the YouTube space where they worked was booting them out. I partially believe it (in terms of the YouTube Space) - but I think it was Barry who pushed for Barshens to end. In 2018ish he was tweeting really vague statements about ‘letting go of things that are distracting me’, ‘leaving things behind’, but when people asked about it he kept quiet. He was also moaning on twitter when Barshens had lower viewing figures, along the lines of ‘when me and Stuart work together we get loads of views but not in other videos’... (something like that anyway) - someone told him to promote Barshens a bit more and he was really snippy saying ‘well why should we have to’
So based on that I genuinely think it was him who wanted to leave Barshens behind which led to its downfall... otherwise the group would have found a way to continue Barshens as it was. Because Barry was also doing a podcast at one point so they had all the equipment to switch it over (although I could never get used to Barshens as a podcast)

Really nice to be able to say this here. On the Barshens/Ashens subreddit there are murmurs about Barry’s involvement in Barshens ending, but they’re usually shut down quick - probably because Ashens looks at both subreddits and people would rather keep their mouths shut - lol!

Sorry, this is a bit off topic! 😂💀 back to mike!

I watched MVK for a long time when it was smaller and he was doing videos like recreating kfc and making large versions of food. The things you posted are what stopped me liking him. Crowd funding for a new studio/expensive lights then getting rid. Then the other new studio on the farm and professional guy that lasted about 2 minutes etc. I remember the new filming style and it was really hard to watch with all the extreme zooming in and out etc. He was so bitchy in response to any comments about the change!
I don’t listen to many podcasts but my husband enjoys the Cheapshow and I tuned in to that episode for the tea! They said he was awkward to work with and that Barry wanted to use the Barshens name and said he created it so should be able to do what he likes. But it was a joint venture! He also wanted to keep it family friendly, no swearing etc, so he could promote it on his channel.

Anyway, yes back to Mike. Sorry! I started watching the three of them around the same time and as they know each other I forget they aren’t one channel 😂

Omg the tea! Haha do you remember what episode it was? Tbh it doesn’t surprise me! I also don’t really think Barry ever fitted in on Barshens because he‘s so sanitised and family friendly and the others weren't. Especially Eli, idk I always got the impression he wasn’t fussed!

hahah, no worries I’m the same!

I’m not sure which episode, we listened to it about a month ago but my husband doesn’t listen to anything in order (weirdo!) It was definitely an episode 100 and something but with 184 episodes that doesn’t really help!
It was only about 5 minutes of talking about him as they then said they probably shouldn‘t really go on about it too much!

Ooh I'm surprised to find this thread! His channel is one of my favourite YouTube channels, doesn't really slot in with anything else I watch but I enjoy how refreshingly normal he is, and his dry sense of humour. Been watching for years. Ocasionally I'll skip watching a Week On series if it's not something I'm interested in but otherwise I watch all his videos.

He makes me laugh the most when he does the 'responding to YT comments'-type videos/live streams, nothing seems to phase him. He just takes everything in his stride.

Grace and Basil are lovely too! I actually kind of wish Grace had her own channel, I'd like to hear more from her.

More Grace Jeavons would be really nice. As for Mike, I do prefer Infomercialism and his food reviews videos to his Weeks On.

Yay! I love Mike Jeavons and happy to see he has a Rave thread. He has quite thick skin doesn't he? The negatives comments seem to just make him laugh if anything.
