Sorry not sure if there's a thread on this? Last night was a difficult position that was handled badly and suprise suprise it's made the situation even worse today with protests outside Scotland Yard and around the corner in parliament Square.

Doesn't look like Cressida dick is going after she's defended what happened last night, not that it would really help anything by her disappearing.

Interested to see how this plays out. Priti Patel effectively nullifying all protests unless she approves is a horrifying thought. People now angered by the forcefulness of the Met when black people have been protesting this for years is an interesting one too.

Oh for crying out loud, all this because people went against the police in the first place last night.

I'm more on the side of the police last night, they were asked lots to move on for hours then the decision was made to act as it was breaking rules set out for public health. Very difficult position and the optics are absolutely terrible. Seems like it would have been better to turn a blind eye, but someone in possession of more information decided to intervine.

Cressida Dick video statement due shortly.

ACAB and always have been. Their purpose has always been only to protect the interests of a select few.

If they’d done nothing they’d be under just as much scrutiny. It was a no win situation

ACAB is such a stupid phrase

The police handled it badly. The videos ive seen are awful, throwing women around. The worst offenders I saw were, surprise surprise, men. Screaming in the face of officers.

I am very pro police, and the incident that’s led to this happening has shocked me to the core (I’ve mentioned on previous threads I used to be a civilian investigator for a uk police force).

I understand why the police put the stops to this HOWEVER I do actually think they should have allowed it considering the scenes previously for the football celebrations?
BUT they didn’t so fair enough.
it was always going to go ahead & I think they missed a real opportunity here to show some solidarity & attempt to help build public relations. They should have sent female officers, they should have attended at the start & said look we know you’re not allowed but we appreciate the reasons for it so we’ll stand with you but if the crowds get too much/covid restrictions etc then we’ll start moving people on. It shouldn’t have come to what it did in my opinion.
There were vigals in other parts of the country, including my home town, I didn’t go as I thought it was cancelled but it didn’t end in any violence/police getting involved.
ive also seen a lot on Twitter that a few anti-covid/anti-maskers attended & tried to make last night about covid(?) so I believe there were others there last night trying to cause a scene.
I don’t agree with the protest today as I think it’s just adding to it all & making it all worse.

In all this I stopped last night & just thought how horrendous all this must be for Sarah’s family & close friends. Not only are they dealing with what they have to, they also have to deal with their daughters name being used so politically. My heart breaks for them. I’m not sure the people driving this have even thought about that.
I do think there needs to be change but I think things could be done differently.
the whole thing has just really really overwhelmed me, not only the whole situation of the alleged crime but I have wonderful ex-colleagues that are literally a credit to the police force that go above & beyond every shift to help victims that I know will likely bear the fall out from this 😔
I’m just so sad right now 😔

Difficult one.

Finding it difficult to defend them(the police) to be honest,
seeing how the BLM protests were handled (police taking the knee in front of them at times)
The football gatherings over the last few weeks, and now this.
It doesn’t look good, especially since a police officer is in custody for this girls murder. And every attempt was made to work WITH the police for days prior.
Other vigils did go ahead with no incidences. Only in London.

(I'm not getting into the restrictions themselves but it all seems a bit extreme now. We’re being stripped of our rights at this point)

So one of their own kidnapped and murdered a woman and now at a Virgil for Sarah, the police think violence is the best cause of action in the face of people showing solidarity and togetherness? Yeah, no. Police are wrong and they need to own up to it. If anybody got a fine, they need to issue Kate Middleton one too. She was there just before the police presence arrived (coincidentally).

I have no issue with people attending vigils/protests. Not ideal during covid but difficult to stop once a movement start to gather momentum.

What I have a HUGE issue with is Sarah Everards name getting linked to it. Her friends have publically said she would not have wanted it and her family must be absolutely heart broken right now to see her name linked to scenes so ugly.

From what I gather the vigil early one yesterday tea time was very peaceful but then started to get rowdy when large groups turned up with banners and started chanting.

I agree with the sentiment (though protests are not my thing) but there is a time and a place and last night in my opinion was not it.

I can’t understand why a few weekends ago, the police escorted a huge number of rowdy football fans around Glasgow but a vigil wasn’t allowed to happen.

In case anyone missed what Sarah's friend wrote the link is here. I am assuming (though I could be wrong) that her family share the same sentiments and gave permission for it to be released.

How bleeping tragic that the poor girls death was hijacked by a protest that turned violent.

According to some, many people were trying to stay socially distanced but were almost corralled so they were all wedged together.

I completely understand it’s covid and that’s why I didn’t attend any vigils but if BML and football fans could protest, police should have left what looked like a peaceful vigil until police began getting heavy handed. Three male police officers pinning down a woman who wasn’t even fighting them? Not necessary and the people I saw getting in police faces and screaming at them? Men.

but I know police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Cressida Dick should have allowed the peaceful vigils to go ahead. The photo of people with their phone lights on and police all lined up in front is a powerful one.

Seems it's been hi jacked by the radical left same as XR and BLM.
They seem to want to cancel the police with the things they are saying and the vandalism they are committing (n)
Put the agitators in a police cell for a while to calm down.
I support women's rights to be safe but this mob is only concerned with getting their face in the news 🤷‍♀️
Well done making an important cause into a riot.

I saw one woman dragged off her bike, and arrested. It was absolutely too heavy handed. A woman being murdered by a police officer like this, and then last night, im surprised there hasnt been a bigger outrage tbh.

Im angry, and would love to protest tbh. But I wouldnt feel safe. Ive never had a good experience with the police, and sadly I dont trust them at all.

Why is this been banded around? I can guarantee you that the scenes from last night are nothing compared to football supporters and Police week in week out. Stupid comparison

The people that caused it all to kick off were apprently trans rights activists. What a surprise!! When interviewed, that red head thats appeared in a lot of the press photos, from an extreme trans rights group called Women Uncut, said she was there to make sure all women, both cis and trans feel safe from men. Not one mention of Sarah Everard. I bet she'd be fine with seeing harm coming to a TERF.
