Happy Easter everyone 🐣

I’m in my mid twenties and when my student loan comes in I want to invest in a new make up routine.

Since lockdown last year I haven’t really been wearing any make up and now I want to learn how to apply it properly.

Please don’t judge me! I apply my No 7 foundation with a sponge and then use a brush to apply (rimmel) powder all over my face where I’ve applied the foundation to stop me from looking orange! I then use eyebrow pencil and mascara.

Is this what I should be doing? I want to be able to apply it properly. Should I look up make up tutorials on YouTube?

What make up should I go for? What does everyone use in their routines? I’m completely new to contouring as well, I just don’t have a clue what I’m doing. I feel like by my age I should know how to apply make up properly 😳

Please help a girl out 🙈

I think it's useful to know what skin type you are first. And also as I got older I learned that skincare and makeup go hand in hand.

I have combination skin so I use foundations for combination/oily skin. I use a sponge to apply anything liquid, I use a brush for my premium foundations then blend more with a sponge. I then apply my powder with the flat base of a sponge because I find that helps the powder sit correctly and doesn't come off as easily if I used a brush.

I'd be wary of youtube tutorials as make up looks SO different on camera compared to real life, but it may be worth having a look at what make up styles you like on celebs maybe then looking up tutorials relating to that.

Also contouring isn't 100% necessary - it really depends on the look you go for. I do very light contour using a nyx stick which has a contour colour and concealer. To contour, I do a little line at the top of my forehead, small lines in the hollow of my cheek and then lines on my jawline then blend. I then use concealer to brighten up the under eye, middle of the forehead and nose and then the chin. Heavy contour just doesn't suit me as I am very pale so it has to be subtle. Powder contours can work quite well too for a subtle look.

There's also loads of good threads on Reddit for make up which has loads of information to help you work out your skin tone and then you can look up brands that are best for your skin tone and type.

I hope that helps but makeup really is such an individual thing. Don't feel pressured to wearing more makeup if you don't want to - I rarely wear foundation anymore, I just do concealer, light application of powder, blusher, eyebrows lightly filled then mascara on.

Oh! And also if you don't have an eyelash curler, invest in one because they make all the different before applying mascara. I was 25 when I started using them and can't go without one now!

Sorry this post is a mess I've had a few glasses of wine lol

It’s my time to shine!

If your foundation is orange. Bin it, it’s not your colour and it’s oxidising. Foundation is meant to even out the colour of your skin. It’s to be flesh coloured.

The best way I find to do foundation is by having a moisturised face, use a primer ( I like porefressional by Benefit on the nose and cheeks and Smashbox for the rest of the face) then I take a buffing brush and apply the foundation in a soft circular motion, make sure to go around your neck and behind your ears and then I dampen my beauty blender and slightly bounce it to give it a smoother blend.

Concealer is quite easy, a lot of people tend to use too much and it just makes them look scary, just put a slight swipe under your eye or anywhere that needs a bit more coverage and blend it out with the sponge until it blends into your foundation. Please don’t use a brighter concealer, it’s meant to be the same colour as your skin not 3 times lighter it just makes people look manic.

Contour depends on the shape of your face and head. But also what type of contour are you doing? Cream or powder? I recommend powder if you’re starting out as it’s far more forgiving. Also contour truly only works out if you are light handed and can blend well.

You need to find a cool shade that suits your skin best and a tapered fluffy brush and work with the hollows of your cheeks and blend the product towards your ears.

When doing blush don’t do that smiling face, as it just makes your face look like your cheeks sitting too high and naturally your face is not constantly smiling. I find blush is naturally best placed right above your contour and also when doing blush put a tiny amount over the bridge of your nose as it gives a more natural look.

Powder is quite straightforward, loose or pressed is fine. Just as long as it’s the right shade and actually sets your makeup. I like to use a damp beauty blender and press the powder into my face but most people prefer just using a brush. Just do not go super heavy handed as it can easily cake up.

If you want any other tips just ask as I now feel like I’m going overboard

No, no thank you. That makes sense. I’ve got quite oily skin. I’ve recently given in to the hype and purchased a lumi for my skincare routine.
Thank you for the advice. Eyelash curler is now on my list!

For just a daily look, I would tend to do
Primer
BB/CC cream
Concealer under eyes/on any spots
Loose powder to set
Bronzer
Little bit of highlight
Tinted brow gel
Mascara
Setting spray
Lip gloss

If it’s a special occasion I will use foundation instead, add blusher and eyeshadow and wear a lot more highlight

what are you looking for?

I havent read all the other comments yet, but for me the most important thing is to invest in some decent brushes. I love my Zoeva and Smith brushes.

Face
I always start with a moisturizer, and then some primer.
Foundation
Concealer
Cream Contour
Powder
Bronzer
Blush
Highlighter
Setting Spray.

For my eyes
Concealer or eye primer
and then i use a pallett- ive got hundreds so it just depends what i fancy/what look to go for.
Mascarra and eyeliner
Eyebrow pencil and gel

I absolutely love make up, i use a mixture of high end and drugstore brands. I love love love Benefit makeup but they give away to so many influencers now and its put me off them :(

For your base makeup it depends on your budget and whether you want a full coverage, matte, dewy look? Estee Lauder Double wear is the foundation i use when i was full coverage and when im going out out (but it makes me feel ick if i wear it every day for general use). Nars is another lovely brand and they do a lovely foundation. Drugstore- i love Maybeline Urban dream cover, its a satin finish and its perfect for every day use. Also Loreal true match foundation is amazing for every day use.
I used to love MAC but ive found myself reaching for other brands tbh. As i said, i love Benefit but i hate the way they spoil influencers, but Benfit highlighters, hoola bronzer, and all of their mascara range are amazing.

I love playing around with make up and finding dupes. A good dupe for Benefit hoola bronzer is Physicians formula bronzer.

For eyes, Morphe are quite a good brand. It is relatively cheap and they do a lot of variety. Urban Decay have some lovely pallets as well.

I think nowadays drugstore brands have totally upped their game and they are so much better than they used to be. And im not ashamed to mix drugstore with high end brands.

For me, the most important thing regarding make up is having decent brushes. If you can, i would highly reccomend you getting yourself some Smith or Zoeva brushes, or even Sigma are quite good. :)

@Saddlesoap

I’ll reply to you here as it’s the appropriate thread.

You said your skin care routine isn’t the best and that plays a massive factor to makeup application. I recommend you to start using products daily or as often as possible if you have the time, if you want a list just tell me your skin type and I’ll give you the best I’ve used on those skin types.

I’ll give you a few choices depending on your budget aswell as I don’t feel right giving 80 pound product suggestions if they don’t have that budget when there’s stuff just as good for next to nothing.

How exactly are you applying your makeup, what your applying with, the products you use (foundation concealer powder) and what your skin type is.

I’ll try my best to help you. X

Ok, so.
I think I have combination skin. My cheeks are dry, but I can get an oily tzone

Daily:
Eve Taylor age resist priming moisturiser or if my skin is feeling dry I use Garnier Moisture bomb.
Face Theory Freshening Face wash (have just realised it's for oily/combination skin though)

In the evening if I remember I use a Tropics cleanser

I have a Magnitone which I use occasionally

I will sometimes use a Moisture Bomb sheet mask or a Superdrug VitC Revitalising mask

Make up wise I have Bare Minerals powder and complexion rescue tinted moisturiser and Tropics Sheer foundation. I use one depending on my mood, though been using the Tropics one most since I got it. I have a kabuki brush for the powder and a beauty blender for the liquid. Smashbox primer goes on first.
Bare minerals blush or bronzer.

My biggest skin concerns are aging, particularly smile lines around my eyes (looking a Botox this year) and uneven skin tone on my cheeks. It looks so much worse on the photo than I though 😢

ETA Sorry for jumping on here OP

Thank you everyone for the advice. I can’t work out how to quote multiple people.
I don’t contour at the moment.

I’m looking at NARS foundation. Would anyone recommend them? They have a colour match option on their website that tells you your recommended colour. I don’t know how accurate this is. Given the shops are all closed atm, and I’m pretty sure all the testers are not going to be on display on the 12th I don’t know what to do re: powders.

I’ve been colour matched on No7 counters before. I’ve got quite oily skin with blemishes that I go for full coverage but I’m open to anything at the moment.

I’ve lost quite a lot of weight and I feel like a different person. I wanted my make up to match that as well. I’m doing this for me.

I recommend spectrum brushes. I love mine and they blend my foundation really nicely. I got this ( see pic) highlighter from boots and oh my god it makes me look so healthy and fresh. I’ve had a few comments at work from postmen saying I look radiant 🤣🤣🤣 so if a man is noticing I think it’s worth the £3. I can’t live without it now , it compliments my skin ( I am quite dry skinned and pale) but it’s really subtle

You first need to get the correct colour of foundation/powder/concealer etc - no, you shouldn’t have to be using powder over foundation to stop it looking orange. If your foundation looks orange on your skin it’s because you are using the entirely wrong colour.

What is your skin like and do you feel you have problem areas that you want to help cover? For example do you have acne/scars? Do you have dark under eye circles or areas of pigmentation you would like to even out? There’s no point in using products if you don’t need them and within each product there’s a wide range of types. For example with foundation, there’s various levels of coverage depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

i would go back to basics. Ditch the orange foundation and powder combo! Try one of the many BB creams that are out there - these give a light natural coverage. Then use a concealer just to cover any blemishes and even out under eye darkness etc. Use a translucent powder to set everything if that’s what you feel more comfortable doing. Shape eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil or pen. Curl lashes and use mascara. Look up you tube tutorials to try various eye make up looks/eye liner etc
Lips can be kept simple with a natural liner and gloss or coloured balm.

it’s all about experimenting and practicing with different products & techniques. When ships open up again I’d go and get your make up done at a MAC counter or similar abs see what they do/suggest

Just don’t feel you have to do make up a certain way or that you have to use certain products or whatever. Make up is very personal and should enhance how you naturally look, rather than being a mask and looking like everyone else.

I agree with @BettyCrockerr above. Keep it simple. If you’re not used to wearing makeup don’t go out and spend your precious student loan money on things you might not use. Forget contouring and highlighting etc for the time being and concentrate on getting the right base product that you feel comfortable with, gives you the right amount of coverage and is the correct shade. Build from there.

All you need to start with are a few basics as well as a base product. Perhaps a blush, mascara, lip colour and you’re good to go. Once you get used to it then you can add colour eye products etc.

My advice would be don’t try and over complicate things too soon or you’ll end up wasting a tonne of money and end up disappointed - been there! Have fun with it 😊

Anyone got any BB Cream recommendations? I've finally mastered my skincare to the point that I don't feel the need to wear a full coverage foundation every day but I still want to even out my skin tone a little. Never used BB cream before so no idea what the best are! Don't mind if it is drug store or high end really (as long as it isn't crazy ££ lolll)

I like Erborian but with it being Korean (although made in France I think 🤷🏼‍♀️) the shade range is atrocious. If you do happen to fit into their minuscule range, the texture and coverage is great. They do a small travel size so you can try first.

A lot of high street ones I find turn orange after I’ve applied them.

Estée Lauder do a cc cream in their revitalising supreme range, but it’s well expensive and again, shade range poor - I think they have it on look fantastic so you can probably get it 20% off.

Ones I always see recommend are Nars tinted moisturiser, Armani neo nude and Clinique moisture surge but they are all tinted moisturisers rather than bb/cc creams. I’m going to try the Armani one next time I need some.

I’ve always used the original Garnier one

i used to use the velvet matte skin tint by Nars, it's quite expensive but a little goes a long way and you only need a thin layer. I get bad scarring from spots and this made my skin look great (in my opinion)! :sneaky:

Sometimes on ebay you can purchase testers of products, they are normally about £3. You have may to buy a few to check for shades but at least you can try them for a few days without having spent loads on a product first. X

Have a look at https://findation.com/

It's usually a pretty good match.

Would any of you fabulous people able to tell me why any foundation I use seems to go cakey? It always seems to go like that no matter what foundation or primer or foundation and primer combo I use. I only use less than a pump so I don't think it's over use of product.

I have a good skincare routine, and my skin feels normal, maybe slightly dry but no dry patches or anything.

Pre covid I had a make up lesson and it went cakey when she applied it. Her advice? To use a scrub exfoliator!!

Thank you!

Is it all over or just in patches ? Mine sometimes does if I have dry patches. Do you use a primer as well ?
