London bound jet crashes after takeoff in India

First thought must be double engine failure as any plane is perfectly capable of flying on one engine. A double engine failure is incredibly rare (think of the Hudson River miracle landing case) and in take off phase is obviously the most critical time for that to happen.

Pure speculation right now but I think a plausible cause here would be a flock of birds being ingested in both engines during the take off roll. Looking online and Ahmedabad airport, like many airports around the world, has bird problems although recent reports say that they had managed to reduce this significantly in 2024.

Tragic incident and we can only hope there are survivors although the odds appear slim looking at the footage. The only slight hope is that the speed of impact would have been a slow as it could have been but I doubt that would have made much difference in reality.

My partner is a pilot, he said it looks like they've brought the flaps up instead of the gear, the way the aircraft is falling it looks like a stall, which would make sense.
Regardless, it's awful, and you hope there are some survivors

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, thanks to your partner for their insight!
News suggests a mayday call was made by the pilot, would they have known they perhaps couldn't recover in the time before impact?

agree with previous posters it doesn't look promising in terms of survivors! really feel for everyone involved and their families.

The pilots would have been aware if the aircraft was stalling as the stall alarm would have been going off. If it was a stall, at such low altitude it would be highly unlikely they could recover from that

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it hit a block that was used for doctors accommodation,

Many are saying online that air india is known as an unsafe airline? Any truth in this? I thought If you were flying into the UK there were strict standards, less so if its an Indian domestic flight.

An expert on Sky News was saying Air India has a fantatsic safety record.

There are over a 100 casualties taken to hospital but I imagine they were people in the buildings and not passengers, I doubt anyone could survive that impact.

I don’t think so, you can see in the video the flaps are up when they should be set for take off. Video looks like a stall. Apparently confirmed the pilots made a mayday call shortly before the crash and looks like they were trying to stretch the glide. It’s just so horribly tragic and sad. I’ll wait for the investigation but this looks like another case of pilot error :(

I have a (possibly weird) love of the Air Crash Investigation tv programme.

It's possible if the cockpit was chaotic and they were panicking at such a crucial time that they may not have realised the mistake they made, while also being confused over why it was stalling. Its happened in other crashes. These things happen (and are over) in seconds really.

Of course that may not be what happened. But pilots not realising the mistake theyve made has happened before.

Me too, I went through a phase of binging on episodes. There were some really brilliant ones, even if the special effects were a bit lame.

I doubt very much it was double birdstrike. From the video I saw, there was no smoke or fire coming from either of the engines. Some sort of human error involving the flaps though? That is plausible and it wouldn’t be the first time.

Indeed although it is difficult to tell the flap position on the video. Take offs only require a small notch of flaps so they aren't fully extended like they would be in a landing configuration for example. I remember back to the 777 that crashed at Heathrow several years ago, the pilot did retract the flaps to try and extend the glide so perhaps that has happened here too.

There must have been a loss of thrust for it to enter a stall though so my thoughts are there were engine problems upon take off which occurred after the had reached take off speed hence their inability to reject the take off. Birds would be the most likely explanation but of course there are a multitude of other things that could have caused it.

According to the BBC flight radar had recorded the aircraft reaching 174 knots which is a high enough speed not to stall even if the flaps were retracted.

It will be interesting to see what the investigation brings.

On X they have videos of the aftermath and it’s disgusting how there are about 20 men swarming around a body part like flies and taking photos and selfie videos.

I was reading the aviation subreddit thread about the crash and there are seriously heavy warnings from some users about avoiding X and other Reddit subs because of the condition of the bodies being shared widely without warning. They say these images can really traumatise you they are so bad. So I’m avoiding looking at this on X. Will stay on here and news channels for now.

Absolutely no respect for those poor souls. O despair of the human race at times
