- If you have disposable income, don’t keep buying stuff to make others rich, put aside for the future, either a rainy day fund or pension. The earlier you start a pension the better. You may want to keep on working as long as possible but there is a big difference between wanting to and having to.
- Don’t mistake your work colleagues for friends. Keep stuff to yourself. And remember HR is there to protect the interests of the employers not employees. They are great with their fluffy offerings these days like well-being hubs and bring your whole self to work malarky, but they are zero assistance if you are in dispute with an employer.
- Join a Union. You may think of it as wasted money but you can access a lot of useful stuff via them.
- Don’t make people a priority in your life if you are just an option in theirs.
- Don’t buy into the Instagram nonsense. They, even the nice ones, are like second hand car salespeople. They are all flogging something or themselves for gain, not because you are part of their tribe or they have a discount code.
- Hard work only gets noticed if you promote it. The workplace is full of dependable and conscientious people who get nowhere. You might be content with going nowhere, happy with your lot, but if you want to advance it really is who you know. Network, network, network.
- That man or woman who broke your heart? In a year’s time you will cross the road to avoid them. The heart repairs and you see it for the nonsense it is.
- Experiences not stuff. The former enriches your life, the latter weighs you down.
- Do the best for your body that you can. Don’t obsess but treat it with care. Don’t take it for granted.
- Read different types of books, opinions and perspectives. Be prepared to change your mind.
- Don’t stagnate. Life rushes past very quickly especially when you hit middle age.
- Don’t take people for granted. They may tire of your crap, or pass away when it’s too late.
- Live in the moment more. You don’t have to film that concert you are actually attending- you are never going to look at that grainy footage ever again, you are just doing it for social media. Be where you are, stop looking through a lens.
- If you have anxiety, give yourself the day off occasionally. Not as daft as it sounds.
- You are not someone’s opinion of you. Ignore that crap.
- Prioritise sleep. Get into a good regime. Sleep is essential not optional.
- Learn a language. That moment when you can effortlessly read something that before was just hieroglyphics is amazing.
- Don’t splash the cash to impress other people. You don’t need logos and bling. Everyone will think it is snide or market-stall anyway.
- Your opinion is every bit as valid as anyone else. Don’t dumb down to make others like you or to fit in.
