Kids and nursery

Hi all, last week at nursery the worker told my little boy she loved him. It made me feel weird! She said 'bye, name.. see you tomorrow... i love you... "

I thought it was quite odd. But maybe I've taken it the wrong way. I work in education (teacher) and would never say this to a child.

Yeh that is weird, did it slip out maybe?

I have said I love you when getting off the phone to my manager 🤣

I can't really say anything. I live in America and they throw 'I love you' around like it is going out of style. I am from Germany where we don't overuse that phrase and only say it if we really mean it.

Could your little one have the same name as her partner/ family member and it's just habit to say it after the name?! If not, very odd!

Ermmmm it’s a bit unprofessional but then again maybe she’s just really bonded with him as she has him all day? I don’t know it’s a tricky one that :-/

But weird, sounds like when I used to call my teacher mum at school and instantly regret it afterwards 😂

Very weird. I would never say "I love you" to a pupil. Sometimes a "darling" or "sweetheart" might come out but thats usually when consoling an upset child. It could have just been a slip of the tongue - maybe ask your son if she says it alot and keep an eye on it as generally youre not meant to be saying that to a child in a school setting regardless.

I used to work in early years and I can’t ever imagine saying that to a child, it would be really inappropriate. I think I’d be tempted to bring it up with the nursery, not to get the person in trouble, just because I wouldn’t feel comfortable with it.

I would listen out for it being said again. It was probably just a slip of the tongue. Years ago I worked in telesales, I finished up a sale call telling the customer I loved him 🙈 I was mortified but I was so used to say bye love you when I hung the phone up that it just came out 😂
If you hear it being said again then a polite word to them won't hurt, something along the lines of, I am so glad my child has someone here that really cares about them but I would prefer it if you didn't say I love you

If it was a slip of the tongue that’s ok, if it happened more than once I’d definitely be having words if that happened to my child. Really inappropriate

I'd feel weird about It, my daugthers teacher will call her sweetheart which I'm fine with but if she said "I love you" I'd be giving her weird looks the rest of the year.

Inappropriate. I get the staff have a really close bond with our kids. But that’s taking it too far.

That is proper weird. I’d maybe get it if your son said it first and she replied to be nice. But to go out of her way to say it? Super weird

Like others have said, to me that is crossing a line slightly. My children’s teacher call them sweetheart, darling etc but if I heard one of them tell my children that they loved them I’d definitely feel uneasy. Take it a day at a time and if you hear it again say something.

It’s weird and unprofessional.

I worked alongside someone who did similar (I’m in education) and I had to pull her up on it. She was wildly unprofessional in other areas too with a disregard for safeguarding expectations and viewed her role more as an extended friend of the child's family than as an educator. (Needless to say, I left as she was driving me insane with her unprofessionalism and heard she had multiple warnings before she “left”.)

It’s tricky as there is a line with small children where they need comfort and support, (fallen in the playground, sick, upset) but voluntarily saying “I love you” is decidedly not on in terms of safeguarding and training strongly advises against making these kinds of comments. Children need to know the boundaries of love at an early age and what is and is not appropriate from adults. This blurs the line somewhat and can put both child and adult in risky circumstances. Safeguarding protects both the child and staff from these kinds of situations.

I’d keep an eye on it but mention it to the head of the department that it made you uncomfortable and that you would not want other parents to feel the same in the future.

Bit weird hopefully was just slip of the tongue? Maybe if it happened again then mention it to management if you’re uncomfortable with it! The first phone call I had to make in my first ever job I ended it with I love you bye! Then immediately apologised I still cringe now thinking about it!

I accidentally called a pupil “My love” today 🤦🏼‍♀️
I always call kids sweat heart and darling mostly cuz I can’t remember 60 kids names 😹😹 now I’ve read this thread I think I’m gonna stop that 😹 didn’t realise how unprofessional it sounds till I think about it .... I’m in reception tho so there four. But still.
