One day I heard my grandfather say in passing he couldn't stand him, acting like the big I am. He told the story of how JS showed up one day to try out for their cycling club and was USELESS.
Do you know when that was, because I know Savile claimed to have raced semi-professionally in the forties.

EDIT: Savile rode in the 1951 Tour of Britain.

This creepy ass mofo  I used to visit Leeds to see my mum's side of the family growing up and this guy gave me the creeps when I was in single digits. I couldn't understand why this guy was such a big media star. One day I heard my grandfather say in passing he couldn't stand him, acting like the big I am. He told the story of how JS showed up one day to try out for their cycling club and was USELESS. If my grf had been alive when JS croaked, he would have been incensed by the cyclist comment listed on his gravestone, he would have had a stroke to see that gold coffin and city procession.
I like the sound of your grandad! I’ve been thinking and I really can’t remember a grown up having a word said against him or conversely a child who wasn’t creeped out by him (speaking as an 80s kid here).
I really hope something like this wouldn’t happen in this day and age. He was an actual psychopath in plain sight.

I write to him as a kid, I wanted to meet Wham. I remember there used to be some charity thing where taxi drivers took disabled kids from Manchester to Blackpool. It was a big procession, I lived on the route and we went to watch. Saville was at the front, stood up in a big open top car waving to everyone. Makes me shudder now

The hospital ‘Jimmy’s’ wasn’t named after him, it’s called St James’

I’m from the city where he was from. He was prevalent in the 2 major hospitals here doing his abusing - even one of the hospitals is called Jimmy’s in his ‘honour’ 🤢

He was on TV well before my time but I remember the Louis Theroux doc - I got creepy vibes.

I remember when he died and he laid in state in one of the hotels. I was on my way to college and people were queuing up to see him!! Why??!
Omg me too and he was always everywhere - schools and everything. He came to switch on the Christmas lights in my town one year. One of my friends (11/12 at the time maybe) says she remembers getting her little sister (5) to go over to him at one of these events - we had no idea!! So sickening 😞

i also had no idea the Jimmy’s thing was because of him!
Didn’t his flat in Roundhay also lie empty for years after he died? Unsurprisingly no one wanted to buy it

We were told to write to him when we were at primary school, I wanted to meet Wham, fortunately we weren’t chosen, he seriously creeped me out even as a child, knowing what he did to vulnerable people made it even worse in my opinion, he was a complete monster and deserves to be vilified for everything he did.

Yes I know but it’s colloquially known as Jimmy’s - I read somewhere it was known as Jimmy’s due to him working as a voluntary porter. I think that was PR spin on his part though.

I met him in the mid 80s when I was about 14. My friend's dad was a nurse at Broadmoor so I was invited to a disco there for friends and family of staff. He was there giving out record shop vouchers. Got the creeps from him there. I remember he wore short shorts and a tight t-shirt. I thought he looks ridiculous 😂

My granddad was a member of Westfield Cycling Club, 10 years older than JS and I don't know all the details, but I think you had to pass some type of time trials or such. The words "can't cycle for toffee" were used by my granddad. :ROFLMAO:

As I peruse Wikipedia, the timeline goes like this:

An interview done by Lynn Barber back in 1990, where she asked him about the rumours about him and young girls.
In 2000, the Louis Theroux doc.
In 2007, interviewed by the cops regarding Duncroft. CPS found insufficient evidence.
March 2008, he brings legal proceedings against The Sun who had linked him to child abuse at Haut de la Gaurenne, but the Sun had a photo of him with kids at the home, when he had denied being there. Again, Jersey Police didn't have enough evidence to arrest him.
December 11, 2011 Newsnight was supposed to air the Duncroft item, but the BBC airs the kissass tribute to JS instead. The Newsnight item was deemed to be "flawed."
October 3, 2012 ITV broadcasts The Other Side of Jimmy and the floodgates open.
Panorama does an investigation into Newsnight and finds there was pressure to drop the Duncroft programme. Newsnight editor steps down.
November 2012 The Met announces the scale of this crimes 450 alleged victims.

So with the Louis Theroux first documentary, it was a long time ago and I think he did ‘the naive reporter tries to get the subject to incriminate themselves’ thing (which has worked on other subjects) and was completely done over by a very sly, self aware predator who knew exactly how to conceal himself in plain sight. LT didn’t get any of the revelations he might have wanted, but got loads of views for it. Cue him dying and everything coming out and LT does feel like a complete idiot who was taken in so publicly and so has to make another doc to try and make up for it and sort of does a mea culpa but not really. I think it remains his biggest fail on his cv and he is deflecting when he blames that poor journalist because he could have tried harder to ask difficult questions but in his earlier documentaries he never did. He got a lot better, the two docs on the porn industry where he spoke to the same people and debunked some of his previous ideas was interesting.

I met him a number of times as a child as I had a family member who also worked in the charity sphere. Everyone thought he was so jovial and bubbly but he always gave me the creeps and even as a little girl I never wanted to be alone with him.

This thread is giving me the judders 🤢 I remember when I was a kid (in the early 80’s) my mum being very triggered by JS, she wouldn’t have any of his programmes on and just tried to change the subject whenever anyone mentioned him. She knew even then he was a bad one, even now she recoils when he’s mentioned 😕 My dad died in Spain and was laid out for all and sundry to view, which is perfect normal in Catholic countries but that’s not what people have the issue with here. The issue is leaving that necro weirdo with his dead mother for a week 😖

LT has openly said JS was a sexual enigma and he could never work that part of his personality out. I think he kept the door open after the first doc to see what else he could get from him. There is a part in the 2nd doc which shows JS going to bbc studios to meet with him, he's dressed inappropriately in a string vest and tiny shorts  and he behaved like a lecherous prick to the girls in the office. Practically chasing them around. He enjoyed making people uncomfortable.

I remember a story broke on the Daily Mail site end of 2011 and Twitter was rife with gossip but when I went back to read the expose again all trace of it had been deleted as had people’s tweets as if there was some sort of injunction in place. Then the following year the truth came out... how did it get kept covered up and why did everyone protect him?

Johnny Rotten knew about Savile, back in 1978. This part of an interview with him was never broadcast, and he ended up being blacklisted by the BBC because of it. Apologies if that perv freaks any of you out.

I've posted about this before on the Secret Celeb thread, but I'll post it again here.

JS used to spend a lot of time in Bournemouth in the 70s and he had a share in a big complex which had 6-7 night clubs in it, amongst other things. Anyway, 1 of the clubs was right at the top of the multi storey car park, and could only be accessed by a lift or steps in the car park.

One night, a girl I worked with went to this particular club. She was a really pretty girl with long dark hair, and she was young, only 16 or maybe just 17.

Anyway, she came into work the next day, and said she'd had an absolute nightmare in the club, the night before; JS had been in there, and he literally wouldn't leave her alone. In the end she'd had to call her dad from the public pay phone in the club, and ask him to come and collect her from the club entrance and take her home, which, luckily he did.

Also, years ago, (late 80s) my friend's parents' best friend was a black cab driver in London. I used to like Rolf on the vet programme he used to be on, and my friend said that her dad's friend said that Rolf was a nonce, and it was quite well known... I was shocked and didn't really believe her, and then, years later it all came out; I often wondered exactly what the cab driver knew, or had seen.

After he died I remember one woman on different chat shows saying she was his child. She looked a bit like him. Everyone was saying she was after his estate.
His gravestone was huge as it had all his accomplishments engraved on it as per his request. Then after the story broke it got ground down into tiny pieces.
As much as I read at the time I don’t remember how or why his hideous crimes eventually made headlines, after everything being hushed up for so long, despite people reporting him. Anyone remember?
Connections, basically. Particularly his friendships with the royals. I had a friend who worked on a national newspaper and it was an open secret as to what he did and what he was. The trouble was, he had the same lawyer as Prince Charles and so any attempt to publish would be met with a strongly worded telephone call or letter from the lawyer threatening to restrict that paper’s access to the royals, specifically Diana. As most newspapers’ sales figures increased significantly when publishing stories or photos of Diana, they just didn’t think it worth the risk. You can’t libel the dead of course and so it was fair game once he had died. Incidentally the Royal Family’s connections to multiple sexual offenders and paedophiles is a story in itself

My dad wouldn't let us watch JS on the telly because he knew a woman that had been raped by JS when she was 15. My older, half sister met him when she was 9, he was handing out sweets near a children's home and my sister was holding her hand out, he took hold of her hand and held onto it for ages, she said she felt really uncomfortable but didn't know why and didn't want the sweets anymore when he let go. What a horrible man. I think it's really obvious that he was a known paedophile but it was kept quiet. So many people have blood on their hands for covering for him

As I stated in another reply on here, basically his connections with the royals. One day, the abuse and predatory behaviour of many members of the house of Windsor and their associates is going to come out. Probably not until most of the current members are dead but there will be a time in the future when we are all long gone when people will muse on forums like this and ask the same questions about the Windsors that we’re asking about Saville right now

Stoke Mandeville Hospital had a cafe called 'Jimmy's' named after Savile which has since been renamed.
