Ok, I've been umming and ahhing about making a thread about her for a while. I like some of her points, which I will list below, but there has always been something that gets under my skin (the irony is not lost on me). Seeing one of her Instagram stories today, with her hairline blurring in a tell-tale sign of using a filter was my tipping point
What I like/admire:
* She's one of the few people asking the question, "Hang on, do I really need this in my beauty regime?"
* She made me delve a little bit deeper into the function of the skin and I stopped using acid exfoliators as a result - my skin hasn't become dull or congested in the meantime. In fact, the less I do with my skin, the more it seems to like it, hurrah!
* She's pissing off a lot of the big brands in beauty (her article about hyaluronic acid was hidden for a long time) and in the time of COVID where people are being careful about where their money goes, this isn't a bad thing
What I'm not keen on
* She has an axe to grind with dermatologists due to her overuse of topical steroids on her face - misdirected anger? I once had to use very potent steroids on my skin, and the dermatologist practically tattooed it on my brain about it's use and time limit. But I wasn't there, so this is conjecture on my part.
* For someone who shouts SCIENCE about the function of the skin, she buys into a lot of woo stuff that has no evidence base (like seed-cycling for one's menstrual cycle)
* Did a u-turn when her, "Is this the end of the manicure?" article drew a lot of upset from manicurists, a lot them being small business owners and/or people of colour. Sticks with safer things such as, "Is this the end of the sheet mask?"
* On her piece on Goop on Instagram - stated: duck the white haters specifically, the ones who constantly and condescendingly call the concepts that Goop highlights into question. -- Made me stratch my head a bit. There are lots of people of colour in the field of science who call various pseudo-scientific concepts into question. I get that she's bringing a lot of awareness about white supremacy, but it just seemed a bit strange.
* She sometimes has the same snippy defensiveness of Sali Hughes. See above.
* Daily affirmations, orgasms, bone broth for skincare - nice for the glowy skincare set of LA, but I'm a grumpy Brit who can just about manage 2 mins of face massage before I jump in the shower.
Your thoughts?
