Seen a few people on here in various other threads commenting on Jason Arday and saying he needs his own thread.

So here it is. In brief, he’s a Cambridge Academic who’s recently been accused of plagiarism - but rumours about his back story and origins being less than true have been circulating for years.

I need to do some more research but I'll start by saying that Jason Arday claims to have been non-verbal until the age of 11 and that he was unable to read and write until he was 18. Quite remarkable, therefore, that he was able to become Cambridge Uni's youngest ever Black professor.

Jason also claimed to have run 600 miles in 6 days, however this has been updated on his Anglia Ruskin Uni profile to say 600 miles in 12 days.

He has an autobiography coming out next month. That should be VERY interesting. Bet the publisher is sweating.
Even leaving aside the plagiarism claims (which do look highly credible, to put it mildly), the tall stories about his early life do look very suspect too. He apparently claimed to have played professional football and snooker at some point - somehow managed to get a couple of GCSEs despite being illiterate, raised £5m for charity, and then there’s various claims about running marathons that just don’t add up. Would be remarkable indeed if any of this were true.
I knew a boy at school who was a compulsive liar - he claimed to be a professional boxer “at the weekend”, his girlfriend was a famous pop star but she wanted to keep it secret, etc. Everyone just rolled their eyes and ignored all this because it was so ludicrous. I’m getting the same sort of vibe from this Arday chap.

I think there is a grain of truth in much of what Jason claims. For example, being
non-verbal untill he was 11. later speech is common in children with dyslexia - but 11 sounds unlikely, three would be more believable.

Have any family members or people he knew as a child confirmed this?

He appears to have been sporty when younger. The 30 marathons in 30(?) days is backed by contemporary newspaper reports, but no idea about the other stuff.

So it’s all unravelling for Cambridge’s latest national treasure… journal articles which wouldn’t make it past even the lightest brush with Turnitin, had he been a UG student.



The Jessica Taylor-style embellishments of the life story are absolutely killing me. He’s gone one above her - a set of GCSEs even though couldn’t read

As I understand it, there were newspaper reports that he was planning to do the 30 marathons, but not confirmation it actually happened. So who knows.

The article itself doesn’t actually validate the marathon claims - but there will be other records that do that (marathons always record competitors and times etc). But we’ll see.
Seems that the publisher is still going ahead with the autobiography “for now” - but TBH, why wouldn’t they? It will probably sell well now, and they can always rebrand it as a fictionalised memoir (that’s been done before).

Yes, the publishing world is more cynical these days than it was before, and as long as an initial title sells, they will happily take on the fallout and rebrand/use it for notoriety sales. They know these people are bullshitters, but whilst they have the spotlight they will publish their nonsense. A kick in the eye for real authors struggling to be taken on by publishers, but sadly a sign of dysfunctional times.

Well, we must all admit defeat and bow down before this veritable superhuman.
The problem with these fantasists, is that they always take it too far to possibly be believable. This bloke is definitely giving similar vibes to that other portrayer of truths, our beloved Jess Taylor.
My kind of marathon runner is Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who actually did complete a number of marathons within a specified time and, when asked how it had been, said that he'd enjoyed every bit of it, except for the running..

The updated statement on the running makes more sense. I understand the initial claim was of 600m in a much shorter time frame which caused speculation as it was an achievement only the most elite atheletes could match.

Carter Ruck were/are involved.

It's an unusual situation & I watch with interest hoping to see the facts.

The academic journey needs more transparent scrutiny given the concerns raised as does why Carter Ruck were instructed a year ago, their remit & who is paying costs.

Oh good, pleased to see a thread about this lad. What an extraordinary life! He definitely made my grifter detecting muscles give a wee twitch when I read about his “300 miles in 3 days” claim. Anyone who runs knows that is an absolutely superhuman achievement, and runners would be very, very interested in the specifics of how he achieved it. Which should be easy to provide, right?

Another article here. I’d believe the 30 marathons in 35 days, but the claims inflated after that. Looks like he raised low five figures- a worthy achievement, but in the decade following, it got inflated to £5 million.

Maybe he intended to run some more amazing ultras after this effort. But there’s no evidence it happened. Couple of interesting links here:

So the 300 in 3 didn’t happen. Nor did the purported 600 miles from Edinburgh to London, with or without the 180-odd mile scenic route you’d take to make that 400-ish mile journey into a 600 mile one. That would be a feat of ultrarunning that would definitely have made waves in the ultra community. It didn’t.

I always know we’ve got a live one on our hands whenever there’s a “but I achieved this impossible thing on a BROKEN LEG and while I HAD SEIZURES and everyone CLAPPED AND CHEERED. Did they, aye?

I don't know if any family members have came out to support or discredit these claims.

I never understand how these grifters are so happy to publish their bizarre stories, is there confabulation? Why don't friends/family step up and say, no, that's not what happened.

Even without the, allegedly, plagiarised PhD and 6000 mile runs he seems to be a high achiever.

Oof, that's a deep dive into his academic claims. Cambridge university are left looking distinctly lacking in their pursuit of academic rigour and due diligence when recruiting him. But then again, he ticked all the boxes for a token post, if that's what the aim was. What an insult to Black academica.
