International Women’s Day rant thread

In case anyone else wants to join me in getting the rage about performative equality and diversity social media posts, internalised misogyny, and generalised fuckwittery off their chests. Or celebrate things that they’ve seen that are positive.

I’ll go first with a minor one, but one that pissed me off before I even got out of bed. Scrolling through Fb and I see this post by the guy that’s currently doing works to my house. Despite the fact it was me that he has dealt with the entire way through when commissioning the approx £3k worth of works he’s doing, he seems to imply here that women are only good for the refreshments they make him while he’s working. He and his wife also manage the local Fb group and have changed the profile pic to this monstrosity. Because that’s all we are. Obsessed with pink, tea & cake, and looking pretty. Urgh.

It’s my absolute fave when some tit clothing/make-up companies offer 30% off for the occasion. Ah yes, that’s what modern women need, lining the pockets of more billionaire men who underpay their female garment workers/warehouse packers.

One thing I am enjoying is @PayGapApp on Twitter that’s sharing the pay gap at all the companies tweeting about IWD. I say enjoying, it’s actually quite depressing.

I loved the twitter pay gap thing last year. I spent most of my day at work on it last year watching some of the companies scrambling to delete their posts after the bot called them out. Fantastic. But awful that it’s still a thing.

Tell him to make his own tea today the prick!

@ElChanguito sadly not.

@eggsalafrancais don’t worry, I won’t and have told partner (who has been here throughout) not to. He’s also currently 48 mins late and I need to get to the office but wanted to discuss snags in person as he’s supposed to be finishing today (already a week later than scheduled and he still has a lot left to do). I’m fuming. I think I should probably just go otherwise I’ll say something I regret!

I love it, but some orgs fall through the gaps - my employer has a tit pay gap (24% lower) but manages to hide it because their legal name is different from their public/social media name. And the gap has got worse this year, plus they are doing a load of performative crap. Grrr.

100%. My work is too small and I don’t think they actually calculate it anyway (because if they did they’d have to acknowledge how bleeping appalling it is). A competitor has done a blog post about how pro women they are. If my bosses try to do something similar I will genuinely have to say something. I’m on the fence about remaining at this company anyway and this could be the final straw!

I think you need to calm down, go and put on a pretty dress, and stop bothering your little head about "manly" things like building work. Have a cup of tea (no biccies though, think of your figure!) and think about nice things like bunnies and flowers, perhaps? 🙄
Happy IWD! 😬

This type of thing makes me angry - drawing attention to stereotypically female traits. I’m sure as hell if she was writing about a bloke these aren’t the characteristics she’d chose. It was the same at a “women students in <typically male dominated profession> awards” I attended last year. Infuriating.

ETA - I’m sure Katy is a great employee, this isn’t a dig at her.

In this day and age WHAT goes through their minds that this can look ok?! Even with the best of intentions do they honestly not know about optics?!

IWD is part a celebration but, in many way, a sad event for me. Just off the top of my head... you have women practically housebound baby-making machines in Afghanistan, FGM still rife, staggering rates of femicide in some countries, access to abortions being limited and grape and sexual violence becoming almost decriminalised even in the UK it's quite sobering.

Some people on social media treat it like a mother's day for all the women in their lives.

There's always a man complaining "what about men?"

A male friend would post about IWD and then says that IMD is November 19

I just saw a post on Instagram saying to support ALL women, giving a list of all the "types" of women ... Righhhhht, guess who was first on the list? Men. Feck offff with that logic. It's a day to celebrate successes and highlight the needs of women (females) around the world. It is not another day for men pretending to be women.

Few colleagues have shared posts about IWD being for all women including transwomen. I now know to keep my terfy opinions away from them!

Eh, rarely involve myself in life so this was my first experience of......
I just laid down a bathroom laminate floor for a disabled friend but I was halfway through when a male visitor came around and asked my disabled friend if he was laying the floor down and then gave me a look as if to say it can't be you who's doing it! 🥴
