so this is embarrassing to admit if I'm honest but I know there must be people in the same boat , but I'm feeling the need More recently to try and make some as I genuinely have none. I know people say all the time I have no friends and they do they have people they talk to or meet even If its not often, but I don't even have that. its been this way for years .

im super super lonley im 20 for god sake. who doesn't have friends at 20?! like there's noting wrong with me im a fun person who likes going out and going shopping and doing girly things.

I had one friend in secondary school who I stayed in contact with for a while but we stopped talking she wasn't a true friend anyway.
question is, is anyone else in the same boat like super lonely and gets really down seeing people go out on the weekends or when ur in a shop alone seeing people with a friend.
how do you even make friends these days :ROFLMAO:
this post will either sounds super sad and you'll laugh or maybe someone will help haha not to sure

I know how you feel, personally I don't have anyone I can just go round to an hang out or do things with, am super anxious an just can't meet people like others can, I get so damn fed up with family that constantly tell me I should go out an met people and always go on about how they are practically living in their friends homes, it also hurts when they tell me that online friends aren't real friends, I have people I game with an talk daily with, they all live miles from me an even different country's but I am constantly told that they can't be real friends because we don't "hang out" I've lost two recently which were both very very sudden an it's seriously hurts because I feel I can't grieve them an I really do miss them but they were online friends

It sucks that people won't class someone as being a friend unless your hanging out with them, an I truely understand the lonlyness you feel, it's hard when you want someone an they aren't there an you see everyone else going out

I’ve been in a similar situation before and it’s not a nice feeling!

When I was around 25 I went through a break up and soon realised that all of my social circle was basically his friends. I felt pretty lonely for a while but then I threw myself into things outside of my comfort zone to make myself have a social life! I had an office job but I started working part time in the evenings at a bar in town and made so many friends from that. I also went to evening classes to learn French and made lots of friends from that too. Soon I had a lot of invites and options of things to do and people to do them with.

Now I’m in my mid thirties and lots of those people are still close friends of mine.

You will make lots of friends during your lifetime, you’re only 20 and although it might feel shit right now you will meet new people and you will absolutely have the experiences everyone else does.

Think of something you enjoy doing and look into how you can meet like minded people.

Wishing you the best xx

Do you really want to go out and do that stuff, or is it more something you think is expected of you?

If it's a case of the former then I agree with @FrostyChops that a hobby / interests is the best way to make like-minded people.

If you're quite happy in your own company, doing your own thing, then you need to know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Maybe you just haven't found 'your' people yet ... you might be a late bloomer in that regard?

aww thanks guys, I feel a bit better about it, and yeah I have joined bumble bff but the convo is soooo one sided the often reply with something like "ok" like its impossible to reply! like they don't seem like they want to even make friends if you know what I mean :/
I lost my job due to covid about a year ag and been applying for jobs ever since! ive had absolutely no luck its been an absolute nightmare.
I think its just hard going through life and hard times feeling like you have no one... especially since I don't really have a supportive family or a good boyfriend.

and I do have some hobbies but there's no clubs for them and I think id find it hard to push myself to go anyway :( everything just seems so depressing for me at the moment but im hoping when I get a job I can make friends... but that will be hard I think

I don’t have any friends as such. I do have a friend that I have been friends with since I was 2. She is the bridesmaid at my wedding, but we don’t see each other often. She has a little boy and I’m not good with kids… we also live in different towns.

Other than that, it’s just me and my fiancé. I do go to bingo and shopping with his older sister and another woman, so I’m not totally isolated.

I actually don’t want a proper friendship group, I’ve been hurt so much in the past by “friends” that I just don’t want to have friends anymore.

Don't feel embarrassed! There's load of people in similar situations to you! I have probably 1 proper friend who I actually see and spend time with, and I can't even remember the last time I saw her - if I don't ask, we don't do anything so even that's a 1 sided friendship really! I do have some online friends who are great and I love chatting to, but in terms of real life people I can actually lean on to turn up and physically be here when I need them, not really anybody. It is really lonely and I know what you mean about being out shopping on your own when you see people with their friends, it can feel a bit sad and miserable. But it's nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed by! Some people, myself included, just find it really hard to put themselves out there, and that's ok! Especially in your 20s when everyones lives are at different stages, some are buying houses, having kids, or getting married whilst others are still living at home wondering what they want to do with their lives. There is no set timeline and no matter where you are, it's ok! But it can make meeting people tough as everyone is at different stages, don't feel embarrassed about it though! I'm sure you're fab :)

I think it's easy to look at people with large friendship groups and feel jealous of them. But whilst they may look super happy on the outside, the chances are they're all bitching about one another as soon as backs are turned.

Have you got any hobbies or specific interests? Are there any local clubs you could join to try and meet people?

Can you do some volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about? I started helping out at a pony sanctuary recently and I have met so many fantastic people, all ages from 7 to 70. It’s great. Might help with the job hunting as well as it can go on your CV. Xx

Gosh you sound so like me when I was 20. I know how you're feeling exactly.

Like you, I didn't make friends easily in high school. I was pretty nerdy, liked books and video games and old movies and rock music, and was shy and never knew what to say. I sat with some girls at lunch but I was never close enough to call them good friends, and after school finished we didn't hang out or stay in contact.

At uni I found some people who I shared more interests with, but again I wouldn't say we were particularly "close". Most nights when I was your age, I lay in bed in my dorm listening to music feeling so, so lonely and bored, like I was the only person not having fun. I wanted to go out like others to bars and clubs and had no one to go with. I had no one I was friendly enough with to live with so had to live in dorms all the time or house shares I found online. I tried to make friends at uni events but i think i was trying too hard (used to get drunk and just ended up being the annoying one in the room). I had a relationship that ended one year, and I spent a year crying in my dorm room most nights feeling so alone like a piece of sh!t and had no friends to cheer me up or go out with.

Since then, I've realised more people than you'd think were in the same boat. Both my now sisters in law had few friends at 20 and few now (no guests from school or uni at their weddings), they prefer their own and their husbands company. My partner had loads of friends at school and uni, but doesn't keep in touch with them anymore (except for 1 extremely close friend from uni), no falling out, he just isn't bothered and he can't relate now to the kids aspect as we have none.

My sister is completely different from me, she makes friends at the drop of a hat, it comes naturally and she loves girls banter and is so sociable, she has about 10 very close friends.... it doesn't work for me at all, I'm more serious and click better with the lads.

It's not embarrassing whatsoever, it's just pot luck sometimes about the people you come across in life. Most people I met at uni either weren't very nice, or weren't enjoyable to spend time with. Some were lovely but already had their own established friend group and it was hard for me to break into that.

Some people just prefer their own company, I'm an introvert and know plenty others who are. You should never think that you're a problem.

Weirdly since uni ended, I've become closer to 2 people from my year at uni (one through work, one through a house share) and now consider them closer friends although we both live abroad and we rarely see each other since covid. I think the reason is that we've all matured since then ( now late 30s) and we now click more together with common interests, while other friends from uni have drifted apart.

Mostly I spend time with my partner, or with family members. I don't want a big friendship group. I've made 2 close friends from work whose company I enjoy and I share my problems with them and vice versa. They're male - I do better in groups of males than fenales.

Who cares what other people think of you "having no friends"? Why should it matter? Trust me, I cared what people thought of me when I was 20 but the older you get (now 35), the less and less you care. I promise. You're an individual and you shouldn't care what other people think.

Friendships happen organically I think when you're paired with the right people in life and you click (like my work friends I mentioned), it sounds like maybe you haven't been around the right people yet.

When I was in school, I had loads of friends. Always on the phone to someone and always someone to go out with. But I had a baby young and it meant that I lost a lot of friends as obviously I couldn’t go out drinking with them. Since then my friends have got less and less. Probably 2 people I would say are friends. Mostly the people I knew are just so different to me now, still stuck in the past and haven’t grown up, no ambition, we just have nothing in common anymore. My closest friend now I didn’t meet until my 20’s at work so you will meet people you just click with.

I didn't have any friends really in my early 20's, due to growing apart and friends having boyfriends, I had a couple of years where I had no one. I started a new job and made friends there, the 2 friends I have now are from that job.
It is lonely and I feel the same, I'm early 40's and a stay at home mum. I've tried talking to the school mum's and attending a play group but I haven't made any friends, but I can't relate to the people where I live or my children's friends parents.
I have 2 friends now, but I hardly talk to them or see them as they don't live near me. I have a couple of online friends, but I don't see them, but that helps a little.
It is hard to make friends when you're older and especially if you're shy, which is my issue.
You're not alone, I know our situation is different, but I understand the loneliness you feel.

Hi, first off its not embarrassing at all! i think when you are an adult it’s hard to both carry on with existing friendships and make new ones. Old friends move on in their lives and we’re all at different stages. I’ve drifted away from friends who have had kids as their priorities have changed, other friends have shown their true colours. As people we grow and therefore it’s only right that naturally our circle of friends changes or gets smaller. Also life gets in the way and you have to really make an effort to be sociable now. Agree with everyone else here- it’s almost like dating- you have to just put yourself out there!

I have no friends either. I'm 45 now, and had loads of friends till I hit 30. Every weekend we were out, and during the week we would see each other.
I now feel really lonely, as I live on my own, and wouldn't be close to my family.
I have anxiety, and find it hard to make a connection with people.
I am in a walking group, great as it is, I haven't made friends with anyone. I have chats with them, but that's as far as it goes.
I am in a meet up group and we are going out next week, but again, I haven't really gelled with anyone.

You can't read too much into what people post on social media either, showing their apparently great lives and gushing about their supposedly dozens of friends. (i used to look at that on Bebo... Showing my age) It only shows one side of people's lives, the side they want you to see - those people could be genuinely happy or they could be crying behind closed doors. A lot of those "friends" could be just acquaintances. I have over 100 friends on Facebook and I'd only consider 2 of them close friends, outside of family members. The rest are acquaintances, some I haven't seen since uni or even school.

I was the same. At 20 I'd come out of a 5 year relationship and realised I'd lost all my friends in that time (more interested in him than friends!). I was suddenly single and friendless and it sucked!
I met my now husband online, felt pathetic doing online dating but there was no other option - have now realised everyone is doing it and it's normal.

I'm now mid thirties, I've made my friends through my children, we are friends as couples and as individuals however lots of our activities revolve around and include our children. And I know they were once in the same situation.

I'm not sure what advice to give as my life is (I'd assume) very different to your as in I have kids etc, but just wanted to say it is a pretty normal thing

What kind of work are you looking for? I find people who work in retail/hospitality or bars/clubs are quite sociable people.

My sister used to work in a nightclub about 6 years ago and is still good friends with two girls she worked with there even though they all now work in different jobs. I guess what I’m saying is, once you’re back working you will find it easier to make friends? I agree that volunteering in the meantime would be good x

Yep nothing wrong with one's own company.

Other people the OP knows mightn't be as "close" to each other as they think either. I can think of people who were friendly with each other in the school and uni days who drifted apart and don't keep in contact any more. Some have fallen out, and some just have developed different interests and grown apart, made new closer friends or rely on their partner for company.

A lot of socialising at age 20 is done with alcohol and it doesn't necessarily lead to meaningful friendships where you would meet for a coffee the next day, share problems and dreams, etc. The friendships I made weren't started through alcohol and nightclubs, just through everyday situations where you chat to someone and realise you enjoy their company and have similar interests and values.
