i think I got a similar deal!! I had my eyes tested at specsavers last week and I never wore the first pair of glasses I bought. I decided to get some anyway. In total I paid £164? I think (it was £160 something). In that deal I got two “designer” pair of glasses. One was for driving and the other pair were sun glasses. I also paid an extra £35 for the anti sun glare thing for the lenses. I think I got a lot for my money but I doubt I’ll ever use them
I don’t really like wearing glasses
The staff at the Specsavers I went to did offer me sunglasses if I really wanted but I did say I don't really wear sunglasses anyway (I'd probably wear prescription ones more but in Scotland, they're not exactly a vital purchase
). But the supervisor there - who basically had to take over because the staff were that boggled by my mega-strength prescription - said that while she normally insists on
everyone taking the 2-for-1 deal ("even just for having then as a spare pair in a drawer, it's worth it"), she didn't think it'd be good for me because I'd likely need to pay to get both lenses thinned (because if I didn't, "I can almost guarantee you won't wear your glasses"... even though I have no option but to wear them, heavy or not
).
So I would politely advise wearing your glasses or you might end up paying out the wazoo if your sight ends up as bad as mine
(And that's just from wearing glasses at too low a prescription for years).
I'm on Specsavers contact lens scheme so every two years, I qualify for a free pair of glasses (up to £79) and pay the difference if I want an expensive pair. Because I only ever wear my glasses at home, I dont pay much and have only used the scheme once last year.
I got quoted £220 for Balmain frames with all the stuff added (which is the worst part!) anti glare, thinning down lens etc. The actual glasses themselves only came to like £70 after the scheme discount. I couldn't believe my ears and told her I'd take the frames by themselves and get the prescription put in elsewhere which I did, for £60. So still paid £130 in total but not the bloody £220 they quoted!!
I went in a few weeks later and asked for another quote - same glasses, same extras and somehow it was now £180. So Idk how they work out their pricing but I dont trust it. Thanks to Covid, I've had too much time to research and have also tried and tested a new cheaper contact lens supplier so will be cancelling with Specsavers after this month!
Yeah, I couldn't help but feel a bit fleeced after it, even though I could tell this wasn't the typical custom experience since they were heavy concerned about my eyesight/prescription. I did feel quite pressured to get glasses there and them but again, I don't think I had a lot of options with how complex my prescription apparently is.
Because I was that thrown, I forgot to ask for a copy of my prescription so I'll need to ask when I pick up glasses, just to see if I could possibly get cheaper ones elsewhere
(glazed meaning when they order and put your lenses/ prescription in) and if they say they don’t do that it’s because they want you to buy there own frames!
