How important are birthdays for you?

I have a weird relationship with my birthday 😂 I have hated it some years because my family don’t really care sometimes, one year my mum rang me and said happy birthday, didn’t bother getting you a card and then said when are you gonna come and see me? 😳 made me feel like tit. You can’t even be bothered to get me a card but you want me to drive to yours to pay you a visit??
Because of this dynamic I always play it down, but in reality I love going out for food, drinks etc to celebrate. It’s my birthday on Sunday and this year I’ve flew abroad on my own to meet some friends, then have some relaxing time alone. The weekend I’m back the guy I’m dating has made plans for us and then the weekend after that I’ve made belated birthday plans with my friend. It’s made me so happy inside that people care about me when previously I’ve been made to feel so inconvenient.

I like my birthday and it's definitely nice to be center of attention for a day but I don't think I'm over the top, happy with cake and cards and a few little presents - the main thing I like to do for my birthday is to go away and have quality time with my partner or spend time with family. I would be upset if I had a partner who didn't really care or make an effort on my birthday.

I like my fiancé to make a fuss, to put some effort into it. I’m not fussed what I get or what we do, as long as it’s thoughtful. I do the same for him.

I don’t do parties or anything like that and I do feel uncomfortable when other people that aren’t my mum or fiancé give me presents…

Apart from for little kids how important are they for you?

Do you like a bit of a fuss or something quiet?

Do you expect your best friends to remember and for them to message?
I am completely disinterested in my own birthday. I’ve never understood grown adults being particularly into it.

I love other people’s birthdays but I really dont like my own. I dont like the disappointment of expecting people the make an effort for me and then they dont. Plus I dont like the attention

Not that important to me, just another reminder that I’m getting older and who wants that? 😝

Being wished a happy birthday is enough for me, I don’t like a massive fuss being made and I certainly wouldn’t want a birthday party. I am always grateful for anything I do get though.

For others’ birthdays, I do like buying nice gifts. I prefer to give rather than receive and so tend to get more excited over my loved ones’ birthdays than my own.

I think birthdays are a weird thing . Some people ( adults) expect so much just because it is their birthday. I mean they have had plenty of them .

I don't like a lot of fuss, we normally do quiet birthdays. I do feel like expecting something would be disappointing. I also feel like my birthday gets forgotten.

However, I may be in the minority but I LOVE getting older.

I like birthdays. My mum always cooks me a nice birthday meal and I get food parcels from both parents as they know that's what I want unless I ask for anything else (which I never do).

My birthday is always ruined by my narcissistic mother reminding me that it's her special day too, and making a song and dance out of it.

I also have a weird thing with birthdays and any celebrations e.g. I didn’t go to any of my graduations. I don’t tell people my birthday and I just try and get through the day (had to work it once 😩). I like Christmas but the day itself is usually somber. NYE is worse. I don’t like other peoples’ birthdays either 🤭 will spoil them, it’s more the pressure to plan stuff so they have a good day.

I love my birthday! But I also look forward to other people’s birthdays- I just enjoy a celebration, good food, bit of cake 🥳

I used to love my birthdays especially 18-late 20ish as it was a brilliant excuse to do nice things and see my mates. Now I'm in my mid 30s, I'm not terribly fussed. Having said that, I do like a nice birthday card from the kids and perhaps a meal out (or decent takeaway in lockdown) with my partner. This year I remember him being really upset I bought myself a birthday cake in our weekly shop. I thought he was being really daft! But the cake is mainly for the kids to see and enjoy too, hence why I wasn't that fussed.

However I do go a bit overboard for my kids' birthdays. This year I've booked about £30 worth of fancy balloons for my about to turn 1 kiddo 🙈 Something I'm slightly horrified by to be honest but again - IT'S FOR THE KIDS.

I'd be interested to know if I would feel different about my own birthday if I didn't have children. I suspect I wouldn't but there would be more weekends away (something I have missed a great deal as our kids refuse to stay overnight with anyone).

Really important in all honesty. I like to so *something* for them even if it’s just a meal and drinks. I think they should be marked. I’ll never work my birthday either if it falls on a weekday, it’s booked off without question and the first thing I do when the new batch of yearly annual leave rolls in.
