Found this quite interesting. Anyone who's ever seen or heard of a cassowary knows to run like hell if you come across one. Violent, nasty things they are.

They did a show on BBC called “Back in Time for Christmas”, that should have lots of ideas and historical context. Also remember that the beginning of the 50s is very different to 1959 due to end of rationing and such!
