Have I wasted four at uni?

Basically I’m in my 4th and final year of uni. I’m on track to get a 2:2 which I can’t help but feel I’ve wasted my time! I know if I’d put in more effort I could’ve done better but between being diagnosed with mental health problems and trying to hold down a full time job it’s been a struggle people seem to make out unless you get a first class or a 2:1 that the degree is useless.

Really I was just wondering if anyone else finished uni with a less than perfect grade and has got a job they wanted! Or have I really fucked things up and I’m gonna be stuck in a job I hate forever

I got a job based on a graduate scheme which you were only eligible to apply for if you received a 2:2 or above...

My degree is business management with marketing! I’m hoping to go into social media marketing if I can! Think it’s just hit me that I’m not gonna get the grade I want so had a bit of a panic

You definitely haven't messed things up at all! I have friends that achieved 1st class degrees, working as waitresses and friends who achieved 2:2's working as managers in their companies. You definitely have not messed anything up.

Out of interest, what is your degree in and what do you hope to do?

I'm a qualified solicitor and got a 2.2 at uni. You definitely have not wasted your time.

My degree is in business management & marketing! I’m hoping to go into social media marketing if possible, I have some experience doing it at the company I work for now but they’re a small family business so there isn’t really room for me to progress from my position now.

Nope don’t panic I know it’s disappointing at the time but I got a 2:2. Got on a graduate scheme and so far it has worked out really well. Once you start working no one even asks about it

The only time it ever mattered was applying for some graduate schemes straight out of uni and they don’t have anything to differentiate between applications so they look for uni grades. However once you start working and get experience no one really asks what you about your degree. A bit like once you leave school no one bothers what a levels you got to etc more bothered about how good you are at your job

Youll be fine. You’ve got your degree. Forget the grade. You will probably find in that industry it’s more who you know and networking that matter more than what you got at Uni.

Same as GCSE, ALevel, a degree can be a stepping stone. As long as you got a relevant one, rarely are you asked the grade. Personality, drive, commitment etc coming over in an interview are far more important as I’d go as far as to say in a social media role having a 1st but no social skill wouldn’t even be preferable

When I look at possible candidates I’ve never looked at someone’s grades and written them off. What’s more important is they sort of person they are- are they going to work hard, do they think creatively and challenge themselves and the status quo. If a company turns you away because of a grade, they probably aren’t the kind of company you want to work for.

You haven't fucked things up. Yes there are some grad schemes and some industries that won't accept you with a 2.2. But those are the mega competitive ones where people with a 1st and 2.1 get rejected too, so it's not like getting a 2.1 magically gets you a job anyway. It sounds like you have good and relevant work experience in what you want to do, so I wouldn't worry. You mention getting diagnosed with MH issues - have you spoken to your uni about that, getting mitigating circumstances etc? Don't be scared to use this option, it's there for exactly this situation.

You’ll be fine! Plenty of people I know have done well with a 2:2, ditto no degree at all.

It may be more difficult to get the job you want at the early stage of your career, but fairly soon it just doesn’t matter. What matters is your approach to your career, how much you want to learn and develop in a role, the relationships you build and how you respond to feedback.

I promise you, it’ll all work out

I got a 2:2, since then I have a Masters and now am a chartered surveyor... so I would say yes I not the best uni grade but it pushed me to work harder and achieve way more.

I was almost kicked out of my masters and just passed. It was a bore. Now though I love my job (generally ha) and have a 6 fig salary. If you're getting bad grades but like the area maybe not the course etc, no it's not a waste. If you hate as aspects - yes probably. Dont judge yourself by college though. Everyone's reskilling right now. The whole thing is shifting. Just do what interests you with a mind to a practical application of it but stay open.

No you havent fucked things up! Plenty of people get a 2:2 and end up going into . You have mentioned you’ve got some experience through your job now, this is what you need to build upon
I got a 2:2 but hated my degree subject and had anxiety in my final year, I went to 3 lectures all year. I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to go into after so can’t comment on still getting the job I wanted and I’m not in a graduate job now- but in interviews after uni I got asked about the volunteering work I did alongside my degree and other skills learnt at uni- never got queried about the grade. (both grad and non grad job interviews).

2:2 here and working in marketing. Love it and precisely 0 people have asked me what my degree mark was (2 internships, 3 permanent roles and countless interviews since uni!)

I also do a fair bit of recruitment into graduate entry level jobs now, and honestly? The classification of their degrees is secondary to me to the quality of their cv (the way it’s written, extra curricular stuff etc). I know it’s hard in current circumstances but if you’re able to get yourself some relevant work experience, in my view that is what makes the difference for me between candidates over what classification their degree was.

You mentioned you're looking to get into social media marketing. I'm in a director-level role at a digital marketing agency (trying not to dox myself - lol) which includes social - can confirm that no one will care about your degree grade. I've hired plenty of people and barely looked at their degree information because it doesn't really matter for a role in digital marketing.

Generally though, really brush up on the paid side of social, basic calculations/arithmetic, and Excel. Boring but necessary. Learn a bit about other digital marketing channels too. Get chatting to people in the industry, or at the very least, start to establish a presence on the likes of LinkedIn so you can get a feel for what's going on. But absolutely don't worry about your degree grade!
