Harry Styles - I can’t be the only person who doesn’t like him.

I'm really conflicted over him. I'm a massive One Direction fan and absolutely adored Harry back then, loved Louis as well but it really was all about Harry for me.

And now....just can't relate this Harry to the Harry that bounced about being a prat at 1D concerts wearing skinny jeans and a black t-shirt.

I don't really like his music, I enjoyed seeing him in concert solo the first time but I wouldn't go now. I've been to see Niall and he was brilliant. Still waiting for Louis' as it's been rearranged a million times now but I'm really looking forward to it, his lockdown livestream concert was brilliant.

I hate that we only get Harry Styles the brand, it's all a carefully constructed veneer that doesn't show you any personality. He's as manufactured as any other plastic pop star out there. I couldn't care less about who he wants to shag and don't really see why it has to be a discussion point. He's a big enough star to declare what he will and will not discuss in interviews so could easily shut down those questions even being asked so he's clearly using the ambiguity as part of the brand

totally agree with you.. which is why i'm on both this thread and the rave thread. the thing that pisses me off is that his management/team knows that his diehard fans are starving for any sort of crumbs from their savior and they know that just having harry the brand is enough to get the numbers. no fucks given about fan interaction whatsoever. say what you want about 1d's management at that time, but at least they showed appreciation to fans all the time.

I'm glad that Niall is as nice as he seems. I love him so much. He would be the first for a 1D reunion, not for the money, but because you could tell he just absolutely loved being on tour with his 3/4 mates just having fun and loving being on stage.

Nobody is saying he's not a nice person though. I'm sure he is. This however, is a thread populated by people who cannot understand his level of fame and the widespread acclaim he receives for doing things many others have done (better) before him. Just being nice doesn't mean you are beyond critique.

And ? Boris Johnson once made cups of tea for the press outside his house but that doesn’t mean he’s forgiven for stuff he’s done.

Nobody is saying HE isn’t a nice person but that doesn’t mean he is beyond any form of criticism for the way his team have created his brand and stage persona.
I’ve seen him in concert he’s a great performer and he’s got some great songs. The critiques most people have who aren’t die hard fans are with Harry styles as a brand and the decisions made by the yes men who surround him. There’s a reason he’s got the most success solo and that’s purely down to very clever marketing.

I really liked him during 1D and I tried so hard to like him when he went solo but the fact that he’s so manufactured puts me off, it’s like we can’t get to know the real him and don’t really get much from him like the others (e.g. Louis goes live a lot, Louis and Niall tweet fans a lot) - in that sense I find him arrogant, like he thinks he’s something better. The narrative in-fandom (I still follow a lot of harry stans from my 1D days) is that he doesn’t use social media because of Larry which tbh I think is a tit excuse and it’s just his fans trying to cling onto something rather than realise he doesn’t like them that much - yes the Larry Stylinson thing may have hurt him and his r’ship with Louis, yes that’s awful but that doesn’t mean he can’t give back to the people who are giving him money - Louis does, so surely the point about Larry is moot. I just, I don’t get what his fans get from him maybe it’s a crappy reflection of me, maybe I need too much from people to stay interested

I do have a few of his songs in my playlist though, I thought maybe that’d help me like him more - it hasn’t. I do like his songs. And his voice. Just not him. Or at least not this manufactured version of him anyway.

Also, IME his fandom are the nastiest most toxic people I’ve ever been around, so much for treating people with kindness.

As for Larry, meh, and I say that as a huge Larry shipper back in the day. I don’t have the time or the energy to care who’s sleeping with who. I don’t agree with those who take it to Harry/Louis and their families, that’s wrong, but equally in recent years I haven’t really seen much of that.

The thing with Harry is isn’t necessarily Harry himself it’s who he surrounds himself with.

I mentioned on the 1D thread how it’s alleged Louis was concerned with the some of LA crowd Harry was surrounding himself with when he was 19/20 and that this (along side the intense Larry shippers) cause their (again alleged) fall out.

The first toe dip into the flamboyant clothing(that infamous silver floral suit and the Gucci shirts) almost certainly matches up with him meeting up with Jeff and the LA crowd. The flamboyant outfits combined with being overly woke and being sexually mysterious are an absolute tick box goldmine of appeal to youngsters, meanwhile most of the older casual fans (like myself) can see right through it. It’s been done before in the past (Bowie/Freddie etc) so it’s not all that shocking.

He gets away with it because compared to other solo males in the charts who are nothing like him and quite frankly safe and boring.
Take away the image he’s just another male solo artist like Ed Shearan or Lewis Capaldi. I stand by my theory his naivety has been taken advantage of for far to long. His entire music career has been at the hands of business men looking to make more money making decisions or suggestions to him. He’s not know any different from the age of 16.

yeah definitely i believe jeff told him to act like this even when he was in 1d to prepare for his solo career. it's all marketing,not real.

I do think it’s sad when you look at how he’s been surrounded by people whose main interest is making money out of him, or any of 1D. It must be so difficult to build genuine relationships I don’t think I’d ever want to be in that position no matter the amount of money. You can never truly know someone’s intentions.
I do think his team have worked to americanise him a lot and compartmentalize between Harry and the brand Harry styles. They’ve obviously been pretty successful. It does distance him a lot from fans though and that’s sad.

16 is far too young to know and realize those things, they were all just kids really. Must have messed them up behind closed doors, I wonder if that’s part of the reason he wants to control how he’s seen and not someone do that for him.

You’re incredibly naive to believe that. Most famous musicians get taken advantage of in some way usually getting screwed over in terms of contracts. This has been a thing for decades. Managers and labels are well known for exploitation and Harry (and 1D) are no different. The only way to avoid this is to be completely independent from the corporate scene.

Sure he makes money but he also makes a lot of other people a heck of a lot more money.

I agree, I'm a big fan. Almost the other end of the spectrum style wise and feels more authentic (and a lot sexier ). Couldn't see him in a vogue photo shoot

Oddly I could see him in UK vogue get him in some McQueen or Westwood or comme des garçons and would be a decent shoot.
