Perhaps it does hark back to the fox analogy - the fox loses control when it gets into a chicken coop and goes into a killing frenzy, often killing all the chickens even though he only takes one. It isn‘t a huge leap from losing control to losing temper/being angry. And then the fox would be ‘spitting feathers’. Or I could be talking complete bollocks.

and further to fox behaviour - they will kill all the chickens in the coop they can find, but may well leave some behind. Not because they are murderous guys (necessarily) but because they view the coop as a larder - take what they want to eat now, and come back for the rest, so they know where their next meal is waiting.
