Meghan and Harry's LA move may be their worst yet

CELIA WALDEN

Donald Trump tweeted that the US will not pay for Harry and Meghan's security protection when they move to LACREDIT: HENRY NICHOLLS/ REUTERS

Fun fact: Petra Manor – the 12,249 sq. ft, £15 million Malibu mansion that Meghan and Harry are said to be “smitten by” – was once occupied by Kylie Jenner.

That’s the lilo-lipped youngest member of the Kardashian clan, should your pop culture need refreshing, a 22-year-old cosmetic “entrepreneur” whose inspirational quotes include: “I would want to hopefully start more businesses, and just be, like, a businesswoman.”

Why it should matter that the Sussexeswould prefer to live there, and in LA, than in a historic British, Grade II country home commissioned by Queen Charlotte in 1801 – a royal retreat previously occupied by the father of novelist Henry James, whose own inspirational quotes included: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind” – I don’t know.

But I do know why the revelation that Meghan and Harry had “left Canada and are now settled in LA” on Friday has prompted the annoyance it has.

It is just annoyance; our anger currently being reserved for the spherical particle with a “corona” of spikes that’s killing tens of thousands across the world and has brought our lives to a standstill. Only not Harry and Meghan, you understand, who chose this moment to leave the Vancouver smokescreen of a bolthole they had been residing in since Megxit, and hop on a private jet to the place that had been their final destination all along: Hollywood.

It felt sneaky, because it was sneaky, like so many of the soon-to-be-ex royals’ actions – from the setting up of their own breakaway Royal faction and the assertion that they wanted to “step back”(and not forward, into a carefully choreographed and lucrative limelight of their own choosing), to the blurring of their intention “to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America”.

Why not just come out and say it? Because, as I wrote in this very column three months ago: “If you rephrase that statement ‘We’ve had enough – we’re off to La La Land’, it confirms every ruthless social-climbing, celebrity-seeking stereotype Meghan has worked hard to rebut.”

Only in Los Angeles, I pointed out, can Meghan not so much have her cake and eat it, as scoop off the icing and cast the boring, dry part aside. Only there, can the couple ditch the duty and the criticism, whilst retaining all the status and the perks. Celebrity hypocrisy, it’s important to understand, isn’t just accepted in LA but de rigueur.

Only they’d overlooked one thing: namely that the President of the US has the memory of an elephant and the petulance of a toddler. He wasn’t about to forget Meghan calling him “divisive” and “misogynistic” on a talk show in 2016, just as he wasn’t about to forget the former actress’s assertion that she could never live in a Trumpian America.

So when he took to Twitter on Sunday to tell the world that, despite being “a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom […] the US will not pay for [Harry and Meghan’s] security protection” – adding for emphasis: “They must pay!” – it was pretty clear that POTUS wasn’t just talking about the estimated £8 million-a-year bill that has hitherto been covered by the British taxpayer.

Donald J. Trump

✔@realDonaldTrump

I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!

The couple hit back yesterday, saying they didn’t expect the US to pay, and that “privately funded security arrangements have been made”. But their pique was as obvious as it had been in their infamous response to the Queen telling them they could no longer sell themselves as “Royal” after stepping down.

That ban comes into force tomorrow, when the Duke and Duchess officially cease to be working royals. But anyone thinking this will impact either the couple’s social standing or their earning capacity is wrong. It’s not simply about who you are in LA, but who you know – and how good a performer you’ve proved yourself to be.

So just as a hefty percentage of Angelenos would probably curtsey to both Dame Helen Mirren and Olivia Colman, convinced that something Queen-like or royal must have rubbed off on them, people will continue to bow and curtsey to the Sussexes as they make their pots of cash and settle into the Malibu home that boasts “an enormous dedicated theatre room”, “full-size dance studio”, “culinary wonder” of a kitchen, and “vast pool and pool-side cabana”.

But as the pair are branded “distant memories” in the UK by royal biographer Penny Junor - in stark contrast to the other members of the royal family, who are helping to combat the deadly coronavirus pandemic – and Canada mourns what it is branding “Megxit 2” (“It’s Canada that deserves to feel ‘stunned and horrified’,” the Toronto Star remarked after their hasty departure) – it seems unlikely that there won’t be more Megxits to come.
Sorry, but apart from anything else, how the actual duck do they think they can afford a £15m property? That’s about half of their reported capital, which would therefore reduce their income still further.

They’re going to blow through his inheritance and her reported nest egg in less than a year at this rate, Prince Charles’s hand outs notwithstanding. I’m sure that Charles’s tenants who’re facing a rent rise are delighted to know it’s going to fund MM’s KarTrashian aspirations.

" They have decided to meet the burden met by British taxpayers" - well isn't that lovely of them? So kind and considerate. When they are paying back the money spent on frogmore? Their wedding? Her clothes? All adds up, migraine. Better find yourself husband number 4 to fund your "independent profile". Remind us, what profile did you have before you met cringe?!

Well exactly. The cost of a mansion and their on going security will cost a fortune. No doubt Meghan will want to buy so that she can get the mansion off him when they eventually divorce. 🤑

Prince Charles will face a backlash too if his tenants find that rent rises are all to fund the Harkles living independently.

I couldn't give a flying duck about Meghan. She is a cold calculated witch, who has "bewitched" PH,and made a reMARKLEble Job of it (intentional spelling). PH has fallen for her (shall we say her 'charms'). I can truly understand why PC will pay for security for this pair of user and abusers. PC is like any other parent, and would pay any price to safeguard their child. Although I despair of Harry,I actually feel sorry for the idiot. As my husband would say "PH is C**T STRUCK". Which we all know can happen to a lot of men. I hope the outcome will be that,PH has a good look at what 'The Tig in The Wig' has reduced him to. Meghan gets stripped of the Duchess status, and wee Archie (if he exists) gets removed from her. She is an unfit parent. We as citizens wouldn't recognise Archie. I'm not sure if Meghan would either! She has spent so little time with him.
I don't think there's any chance that Archie will come back to this country until he is an adult and can decide for himself. She has him as hostage to leverage money out of royal family.

Just imagine how dirty the divorce is going to be 🤭
She will go for as much money as she can get to look after Archie in the style he has become accustomed to. Not to mention money to keep quiet (which she won't of course). 😀

That quote is also attributed to Prince Charles as well. Or should we be bowing down Your Highness Camilla? 😂😂

As pp’s have said, I don’t see Harry being of much use for much longer.
There‘s no need for another baby as she has Merchie.
She’s probably promised Harry another baby, just to string him along.
She just needs him to stump up for a couple of houses. One in LA and one by Soho House in Oxfordshire.
She won’t remarry, because the title is too valuable

Wonder what's happening with frogmore then?

I see no racism in this thread. And I for one am sick to death of hearing that argument.

Unless of course it’s gingerism 🤔

Wonder what's happening with frogmore then?
Well initially they were keeping it as a uk base but we all know they won’t be here to ever use it. It was all smoke and mirrors. It now needs to be used for better purposes.

So why are some people convinced that she's actually older than she claims to be?
It's true that a lot of actresses do knock few years off their age.
Is there any evidence that she's really 42 or 43?
How weird is that. I looked at a photo of her the other day and I thought she looked much older than 38
id have said 42-44
then this post crops up
synchronicity ?

I absolutely LOVE reading all of your comments!!! You make me laugh so hard. Anyone with a brain knows there's drama behind closed doors anywhere! And all families have skeletons in their closets and cracks in the veneers. But omg the comments from her "closest friends" of how "toxic" the RF is, how mistreated she's been, how her experience "mirrors" Diana's.... blah, blah, blech!!!! This twit has moaned and groaned since DAY 1!

She's not as loved as Kate. William doesn't like her. She threw a tantrum over by not being allowed to wear the crown she wanted. Harry throws a tantrum cuz she's throwing a tantrum. Hell they TOTALLY stole his cousin's thunder "announcing" their pregnancy at her damn wedding!!

She was NEVER going to be Kate! But that didn't stop her from trying to demand she be treated and loved, and respected like her. Her holding of her belly from the onset of pregnancy was annoying AF!! I've had 5 children. I love them all so much, but I sure as hell didn't go above and beyond to "cradle" my non existent belly, to ensure everyone knew I was "with child" 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

I want to, honestly, know what y'all thought of their wedding?? Personally, I loved her dress and veil. I thought it complimented his uniform perfectly. I loved the color scheme of their formal pictures. With that said, I had to mute the TV when the over the top Gospel started singing and the "American Preacher" droned on and on. I just didn't feel it was appropriate. But that's my opinion. And apparently I wasn't alone from the looks I saw on the television.

I don't believe Kate was unwelcoming. I DO believe William was NOT excited about this marriage. I don't believe HRM the Queen was anything but kind to this girl. Hell, I even believe Charles was nice in his own way. Camilla?? Meh, I have no fekks to give for her 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've always felt that after Diana's death, he really did step up with those boys. The whole Family did. But that's me looking at things miles of ocean and land away. I think they are both ate up with the dumb**, and she believed she could come in and micromanage everything to HER liking. I DO believe she was difficult to work with. I DO believe she caused conflict between William and Harry. And I DO believe she had and still does have, an agenda.

OK - rant over and soap box put away
I didn’t watch it, really not interested in the RF, I didn’t watch Kate & William get married, nor did I watch the Charles & Diana’s wedding either. Although I’ve heard nice things about Anne from people who’ve been involved with her

We have a RF & no one appears to do “Pomp“ quite like the UK - that is about my thoughts on the whole royal thing, I really have/had no interest in them.

I didn’t understand the whole “mourning thing“ when Diana died, didnt watch the funeral & tbh really didn’t get the hysteria. Diana, so very obviously had her issues, (I also think if you google there are plenty of photos where Diana has a similar facial expression to the one of MM, Harry as above.) I think the expression on Megs face is up there with wearing the same perfume, it’s creepy!!

I dont understand the worship of the RF.......ie the sleeping on the street for two days before a baby is born. It leaves me scratching my head & wondering wtf? I can quite happily take them or leave them....but this, this is a car crash that keeps repeating, I cant quite take my eyes off it!!

Even with my limited knowledge of the Royal Family, I know they are apolitical, & that you don’t under any circumstances make money from your “Royal connections”. It really is t done!

There has just been something about their whole attitude & behaviour that just leaves me totally astounded by the narcissism & self importance, (and their let’s face it downright disgusting behaviour towards the rest of the family). As I said previously they need stripping of everything.

Maybe that’s why I’m hoping they fall flat on their faces because the apparent behaviour, ie temper tantrums really should not be rewarded. If the RF give in they are making a “long term Rod for their own backs”

I doa lot of genealogy and I looked her up. She’s the age she says she is according to Ancestry records.
Oh well thats knocked a lot of my speculations on the head.
what on Earth has she had done to her face to make her look so old then.
in her frumpy clothes she could pass for 50

I wasn't stating "step up" as a criticism. More of as in taking on dual roles now. He was the only parent left. I understand what you're saying about the uniforms. We're a Military and Law Enforcement Family. The darkness of Harry's uniform reminded me of our Marine Corps Dress Blues. I'd have to go back and look at pictures to understand the funeral vibe.

And I think Kate did amazingly for a mom with toddlers, who just gave birth, and had to be friendly and shining for all the world to see.

I guess from an outsider looking in, so to speak, I feel M came in guns a blazing hell bent on causing issues. Like someone challenged her that it couldn't be done, and this her "hold my beer" response. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ok after looking back on the pics.....I forgot about the weird ruffle things on the front of the uniform.....and understand what you mean about the page boys......
Omg..I’ve not seen these pics. It all looks very staged. The greens of the Queen, Doria and lighter version of kate. The green in room, flowers, the white, ivory, gold, black and grey
you have to hand it to her..she got the palette perfect

I pop in here from time to time, disappointing to see that the worst thread on Tattle is still in full swing.
Half of you should be ashamed. The racisism and vitroiol in here is disgusting.
Please point out the racism as I've never seen anyone mention her skin colour ,why do Meghan fans instantly throw in the race card ?

Because they've got nothing else to justify their sad worship of her. When they accuse anyone who doesn't like her of racism they think we will all be intimidated. It's an easy card to play and quite pathetic.

Very true, the only thing her fans do on Facebook if anything negative is said about her is accuse you of being racist, bit sad isn't it ?

Taken from the Express - https://www.express.co.uk/news/roya...nce-harry-news-security-cost-LA-california-US

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are facing a multi-million dollar security bill after losing their free personal protection squad following their move from Canada to the US. Harry and Meghan will need to pay top security specialists about £800 ($1,000) a day and a team of guards will be required to patrol the perimeter of their property, according to Dai Davies, a former head of Scotland Yard's royalty protection unit.

They or their family, through the Queen or Prince Charles, have become liable for the costs because from today the Sussexes will no longer be working royals able to ask for assistance from host countries. Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, will lose their status as internationally protected persons under a 1973 United Nations treaty.

Maybe this is why they were so desperate to hang on to “part time royal”
