I have bleached blonde hair and went to the hairdresser to have the blonde toned down along with a balayage at the roots. Showed photos of a darker blonde.

Hairdresser said during the treatment my hair "sucked up" the dark colour too much so she put a lightener and toner on it.

Long story short my hair is now ginger/orange. I've messaged her asking to have it fixed but no response. Does anyone have any advice? I'm so upset and just want it fixed ASAP although won't be able to get booked in anywhere else for ages with hairdressers having just re-opened. Is box dye a bad idea?

Your hairdresser sounds crap. Let me get this straight, she dyed over your bleached hair with a darker colour - and then lightened it again.... 🤦‍♀️ of course it’s gone ginger. How did you leave it with her? Did you tell her that’s not what you wanted?

To get bleached blonde hair darker there needs to be red added to it, so when you then strip the hair again you’re left with red tones. She could bleach it again but this is going to jeopardise the health of your hair. If the hair was ginger because of a colour id say you could probably strip out the colour with a clarifying shampoo or even a mild bleach bath but it sounds like you’ve just been left with untoned lightned hair. I’d push for her to fix it, doing it yourself you risk messing it up even more seeing as it’s already been bleached by her recently. Depending on what level it is you may be able to tone it down slightly with a purple or blue shampoo.

Oh god. I’m no hairdresser but even I know that you can’t just dye over bleached blonde as you’ve essentially removed the colour. I tried to dye over my highlights in the 1st lockdown and it was a lovely shade of ginger until my hairdresser could fix it. I once went rpm bleached blonde to brunette and I remember she had to add red to it. Don’t box dye it. I’d get booked into another hairdresser if you can or at least demand that she fixes it. Good news, is that it can be fixed

Purple shampoo won’t work, if this hairdresser has attempted bayalage, I’m guessing (could be wrong, still can’t fathom) it’s the root area/crown where she has made a mess, with I’m assuming a perm tint? If you could post a couple of pics birds eye view of your parting/root area it would be helpful.
Ps for her to say your hair has sucked up the colour indicates it was already porous (damaged) she hasn’t accounted for this (although she definitely should of done because even the most healthiest of bleached hair will suck up colour/develop quicker than normal, basic rule) put a colour on, the shade you requested, it’s developed almost instantly because it’s porous, she has then panicked thinking it’s going too dark, rinsed off prematurely and left with root glow?

I’ve no words. No idea what she has done or why. The base isn’t dark enough to start with. I’d be asking her to fix it, looks a million miles away from the picture you have shown her.

I am not a hairdresser but looks like the colours used are warm rather than golden. You do need to put red back in to bleached hair to stop it going green when you darken it, but not too red

Oh heck. Firstly, I wouldn’t ask her to put it right, other than financially. She’s ballsed it up and shouldn’t have let a customer go away unhappy without having a plan to rectify it. I’d research colour specialists in your area and ask for a consultation. Don’t be tempted to use box dyes, invest in getting it put right by a professional as it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Finally, do what you can to keep your hair in good condition in the meantime, so that it has the best chance with any further processing to correct it.

Where do you live lovely? I know a great hairdressers that deals with colour correcting x

If it was me, and I by no means do sensible things to me own hair, is I would colour strip it with colour b4, then use a Demi ash tone on the warmth, leave it a week and go to a different hairdresser x I have removed bright red from my own hair with colour before to get it back to white. The problem is when you have white ash you need to prep the hair before you put dark on otherwise it will go orange or green.

Thank you! so I've always been a 'cut my own hair- box dye' kind of girl. I have natural dark brown hair (top part about 4 inches showing) and the rest of it is well.. box dye brassy. Can I get this fixed by a hairdresser by getting it coloured or are there always chances it can get brassy again? I know this might sound as a dumb question but I just haven't been to a hairdresser for over 10 years or so. If it could turn brassy even after going to a hairdresser, not sure if it is worth spending the money and I would just rather suck it up and let it grow out, although that might take a while :LOL: thx!

Yeah of course it can be fixed, you would be better collecting some pictures of exactly how you would like the finished result to look, it may be a journey or you might get there in one sitting depending on what it is you want. In the meantime while you decide/wait for an appointment get into a hair mask routine, couple of times a week to get your hair in the best health for the process.

Definitely manageable in one sitting then, the hairdresser may need to pre pig the brassy sections first to stop your new colour fading x
