I took an allergic reaction (massive face swelling) to hair dye almost a year ago after years of using this particular dark brown dye with no issues. I haven’t dyed my hair since and the greys are coming in thick and fast. I have carried out a few patch tests with dyes that don’t contain the PPD I’m allergic to and they have also caused slight irritation. I’m early 30s so I don’t feel ready to embrace the greying life yet. I was just wondering if anyone has been through similar and has successfully dyed their hair again? I’m very dark brown naturally.

I've never had the issue but what hair dyes have you tried? Were they completely PPD free? Could there have been any ammonia in it? I'd be careful before proceeding as allergic reactions generally get worse. Could also be worthwhile asking for GP for a referral to a allergy clinic for a double check.
Lush do a henna hair dye which is meant to be safe for those with normal hair dye allergies. Sorry I can’t help with the normal hair dye allergy, I have no experience of that!
I had considered getting an allergy test so definitely going to get that sorted. I’ve put it off only because I just considered going grey and just embracing it but it’s just getting me down now. The dyes say no ppd, no ammonia etc so there’s definitely something else in these dyes that doesn’t agree with me. Thanks for the reply

Have you had covid? I died my hair for 20 odd years no issues had covid then became allergic to hair dye. I haven't died it since it I'm embracing my grey but I'm mid 40s so I now I'm OK with it.
I hadn’t had covid when I dyed my hair. A friend had said to me about the link between the 2 though, I think covid has affected quite a few people that way. I just became randomly allergic.
Did you have the vaccine though? Hairdressers were advising that everyone should have a patch test after the vaccine.
Also the darker the hair dye the more likely a reaction so maybe you could go lighter? My friend went from dark brown to blonde.
I dyed my hair for years but then started to get slight reactions afterwards but I have health anxiety, so it freaked me out and i stopped colouring and embraced the grey. I don’t mind the grey but I get a lot of family and friends suggesting I should colour it again!
I have had the vaccine yeah but had dyed my hair a couple of times prior to this occasion after having all my vaccines and had no problem.
I have considered speaking to my hairdresser about going lighter. My family and friends always say oh don’t be daft can’t even see the grey but it’s all I see
I love hearing about people embracing the grey though because it can look amazing.I've actually had people think I've had my grey hair done at the hair dressers and I have had compliments it took me a while to get use to it but now I'm fine with it. My hairdresser suggested having streaks with a cap on to minimise any contact with the scalp might be a thought
I was looking at photos for inspiration as I had just considered working the grey into my hair more and it can look absolutely stunning. Mines is just random strands just now and I just feel a bit of a riot. The cap could be an idea.
Use the semi permanent hair shampoo colours! By bleach London or Glaze

I know this was an age ago and you may have used it already
but I have severe, face swelling reactions to all other dyes except Bleach London, however I can’t use their “normal” colours, just make sure you do a patch test first
