Has anyone eloped to Gretna Green and got married? My partner and I are thinking about it in the New Year and just wanted to hear others experiences..

Thanks :)

I've been to a Gretna wedding this year! It was lovely but bare in mind there really isn't a lot there so you're very limited if you wanted to stay more than the night before and the night of the wedding and it is pricey in the hotels and cafe (tourist trap!).

If you get married through the day and have photos outside you will have people in/outside the cafe opposite watching too as it's a few feet away but was a lovely little wedding though.

Stayed in Smith's hotel which was lovely and where the dinner after was and the bride and groom stayed in a cottage opposite Blacksmiths Shop where you can get married. Also had hair, make up and nails done at Spoilt which is in Smith's hotel and they were incredible.

Both hotels are the same company but the other one has pretty gardens round the back and think was a bit more 'plush' from the brochures from my gathering.

Have you resolved your issues?

We looked at it and decided on the Lake District instead… much much prettier! And things to do, too. A lot of hotels around Windermere offered elopement packages. I guess it depends if there’s a reason you’re thinking of Gretna green specifically, or if it’s for just for an elopement

We eloped to Gretna Green and it was the best decision for us! It was perfect, no frills and they sorted everything for us, all we had to do was turn up! I’d deffo recommend it! 😁

We thought about it and went for a look . While we were there we got asked to be witnesses for an eloping couple.

While we were looking into it ,we found out Coldstream also do elopements

We eloped to Gretna Green 6 years ago. Best decision ever! We booked the hotel room for 2 nights & they organized the actual elopement. We showed up, checked in, had a little walk around, had dinner there and then the next day we got breakfast room service and just took our time getting ready. I did my own hair & make up although you can organize to have that done for you there too. We got 2 witnesses who were actually getting married themselves the next day. The man in charge of the ceremonies, Frank, he took some lovely photos of us on our phone and later we had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. The next day we went down for breakfast, checked out & went home. It was really perfect cos we just wanted it to be just the 2 of us with no fuss. Everyone was so lovely.
I would definitely recommend!

Not Gretna Green, but we told no one when we got married, local registry office, asked a random couple to be witness, best decision we ever made!
Good luck!

We eloped at Gretna registry office this summer on our way to a holiday in Scotland and it was the best decision! No wedding planning stress, cheap as chips and suited us as a very low key couple who dread the idea of being the centre of attention. Arranged it so easily via email and posting docs to the registry office. Our parents and his sister came up with us (they asked to come, we didn't invite them but were happy for them to), we all had a nice dinner at a restaurant 10 mins away and then we left for our holiday, family went home. Can't believe the amount of people we told afterwards who said they wish they'd done similar, although they could just be being nice I guess..!
